What’s New
This issue marks a first of sorts, since much of its content was written by two readers of The Health Plus Letter – Sheila Wolf, RDH, and Glenn Coleman. Sheila, also known as Mama Gums, shares with us self-care tips for examining and preventing oral cancer, while Glenn wrote an excellent article on how our “self-talk” directly affects our health. I think you’ll find both articles as informative as I did.
Also in this issue are self-care tips for managing and preventing dermatitis. Next week, I’ll get back to writing the Health News and Commentary section, which once again is absent this issue.
Don’t forget, you can still obtain any and all titles in our Burton Goldberg eBook Library of Health for only $9.95 each (a savings of nearly 70%). The wealth of health-related information in this series is unrivaled and has already helped thousands of people to live healthier, more productive lives. The Important Oral Cancer Exam by Sheila Wolf, RDH
More than 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. That means that somewhere on the lips, the gums, the linings of the cheeks, the tongue, the floor of the mouth (underneath the tongue), the palates, and that little pad behind the wisdom teeth, there could be something lurking that threatens your well-being. Oral cancer can be deadly. However, if diagnosed early enough, oral cancers can be treated with great success.
Consider your doctor exceptional if, when performing your yearly physical, he looks at more in your mouth than just your tonsils and that little dangly thing in the back of your throat (your uvula). According to The American Cancer Society, a 1992 national survey revealed that only 15% of the population reported ever having had an oral examination.
There seems to be an unspoken agreement in the world of medical professionals, that the mouth is an entirely separate area of the body, its domain belonging to the dental specialist. This reliance on the dentist or hygienist assumes that everyone has dental regular check-ups and that every dental professional performs an oral cancer exam.
It is not yet universally accepted that the health of the mouth has an effect on the rest of the body. In his first-ever report on oral health in 2000, the Surgeon General made this statement: "Oral health is integral to general health ... Oral health and general health should not be interpreted as separate entities." You cannot have a healthy body if your mouth is diseased.
Who is most at risk for oral cancers? People over the age of 40. People who smoke cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. People who chew tobacco and dip snuff. People who drink alcohol excessively. People who are exposed to too much sun (cancer of the lip). People who both drink and smoke have increased risk.
However, don't be smug if you don't fall into those categories. More than 25% of oral cancers occur in people who do not smoke and have no other risk factors.
I once had a fourteen-year-old boy in my dental chair who "dipped" tobacco. He used to chew it first and then hold it against his lower lip and gums when he played baseball because, he said, it was "cool." When he came in to have his teeth cleaned, I noticed a suspicious-looking white patch between his cheek and gums, which had obviously developed from the constant irritation of a foreign, nicotine-soaked substance being placed there on a regular basis during baseball season. It definitely appeared to be pre-cancerous, and I told him that if he didn't stop "dipping," he would probably lo/se his jawbone -- if not his very life!
He quit ... And lived. Thank goodness he listened.
Here is a list of things to look for in your mouth that could save your life: A sore or spot on your lip or in your mouth that bleeds easily or does not heal for 2 weeks or longer. A white or red area on your gums, tongue, or lining of your mouth. A lump, thickening, or crusty spot on your lip, your mouth or your throat. A persistent sore throat. A change in your voice. A pain in your ear. An unexplained swelling of your jaw with difficulty chewing, speaking or swallowing. Any unusual bleeding, pain, or a numb feeling in your mouth area. A change in the way your teeth come together. Any asymmetry on your lips, mouth, face, or neck.
If you have any concerns, Always consult your physician or your dentist for a diagnosis.
If your physician or dentist notices something that looks unusual, she will probably ask you to come back in 2 weeks so she can che/ck it again. Most sores heal in that length of time. If it is still there, she may perform a simple, painless test, called a brush biopsy that can detect potentially dangerous cells at an early stage of disease. If your dentist suspects something risky, a biopsy (removal of a piece of the tissue with local anesthesia) will be sent to a pathologist who will examine it under a microscope to che/ck for cancer cells. Either your general dentist will do this or he/she will refer you to a specialist.
What can you do to safeguard your health?
Make sure you have regular dental check-ups. They should include an examination of the entire mouth, which is vital in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. You could have a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore and not be aware of it.
Always ask your doctor, dentist or hygienist to do an oral cancer exam as part of your routine exam. You are entitled to it! It should take just a few minutes and could save your life. Seventy-five percent of all head and neck cancers begin in the oral cavity.
Do a monthly self-examination. Remove any appliances you have in your mouth and use a washcloth or gauze to dry off your tissues. This will enable you to see lumps or bumps easier as well as any changes in the texture of your tissues. The National Cancer Institute encourages people to take an active role in the early detection of oral cancer.
Eat a diet plentiful in fruits and vegetables. Studies show that good nutrition may prevent the development of potentially cancerous lesions.
Remember, frequent self-diagnosis in between dental visits is important.

Self-Care Tips for Managing and Preventing Dermatitis
Dermatitis refers to several forms of inflammation of the most superficial portion of the skin. It is most frequently caused by food allergies, contact allergies (makeup, nickel and other metals in jewelry, perfumes, creams), or toxic plant allergies such as poison ivy or poison oak. Many medical sources use the terms dermatitis and eczema interchangeably.
Symptoms: Itching, flaking, color oozing, crusting, scaling, and thickening of the skin.
Special Notes: If allergic cause is not removed and/or it is excessively scratched, the dermatitis may spread and become very severe.
There are many types of dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is an inflammation produced by substances that touch the skin, from direct irritants, to allergic substances, to exposure to light. Atopic dermatitis is a severe, chronic, itching and inflammation of the skin in individuals with a family history of allergic disorders such as asthma, hay fever, and milk allergies. Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammation of skin usually on the scalp, face, and, rarely, on the sternum (breastbone). Nummular dermatitis produces coin-shaped red bumps that severely itch and is seen in middle-age people under stress and more often in the winter. There can also be chronic dermatitis of the hands and feet or a generalized dermatitis that affects wide areas of the skin with extreme scaling.
Self-Care
Diet: Identify and avoid food allergies and other allergic substances. Try a gluten-free diet with no wheat, oats, rye, barley. According to Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., in Europe the most likely allergy would be dairy foods, especially cow’s milk as many studies have shown this to be the likeliest culprit food, followed by wheat. Eat lots of yogurt, sauerkraut, and naturally fermented foods.
Nutritional Therapy: • Vitamin B6 • Vitamin B complex • Evening primrose oil or omega-6 fatty acids from other sources • Acidophilus • Zinc • Magnesium • Assess need for digestive enzymes or gastrointestinal problems such as parasites.
Aromatherapy: Benzoin, chamomile, lavender, bergamot, geranium.
Flower Essences: Flower essences for accompanying emotional/mental states. Rescue Remedy Cream®. Crab Apple.
Herbs: Combine the tinctures of nettle, red clover, and cleavers in equal parts and take 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture three times a day. Drink an infusion of fresh nettle or cleavers twice a day. To alleviate itching, bathe the area with lukewarm or cold chickweed infusion. For cracked, dry, or painful skin, use a salve made from calendula flowers and St. John’s wort leaves.
Homeopathy: Pulsatilla, Arsen alb., Lycopodium, Graphites, Petroleum, Sulfur, Thuja, Sepia.
Hydrotherapy: Cold compress (apply as needed to control pain or itching).
Topical Treatment: • Aloe vera gel • Pyridoxine ointment • For itching, mix vitamin E, vitamin A, unflavored yogurt, a little honey, and zinc oxide, and place onto skin. • Evening primrose oil applied directly to cracks and sore areas of the skin (folds such as elbows and behind the knee, for example) can be very helpful in promoting healing.

Reader Feedback
I received the following email from Glenn Coleman last week. Glen is a long-time reader of The Health Plus Letter, and very committed to taking responsibility for his own health. I enjoyed what he wrote so much that I am sharing it with you here.
"Good Health Through Constructive Self-Talk by Glenn Coleman
"Self-talk" has been a special topic for me recently. For some reason I am noticing self-talk through a number of interesting viewpoints, and its starting to open new doors for health with this vision.
I had a unique experience recently after I took a course on "Soul Realization" done by members of the Pranic Healing Association. During this course we did experiments where we sat across from one another, and sent positive "thoughts" to the other person, then measured their pranic energy (measured by using pranic healing techiques to feel the energy over each others crown chakra). The increase in the other person’s energy was very obvious. The same experiment was done with negative "thoughts", causing a great reduction in the other person’s pranic energy.
I was completely shocked that I would be able to impact another person’s energy system, simply by thinking positively or negatively about them. This was the most powerful thing I have ever experienced. Imagine how our personal energy can be impacted by positive or negative thoughts we have towards ourselves. [Note: Pranic Healing is a powerfully effective type of energy healing that I heartily recommend. For more information about it, visit http://www.pranichealing.com - Larry]
Then I went through Valerie Hunt's eBook Mind Mastery Meditations, and picked up on "self-talk" in the methods Dr. Hunt recommends to get relaxed. I had long forgotten how powerful it is to talk to the different areas of my body to tell them to relax, when I do meditation or exercise. Then I remembered some techniques I learned from a cognitive therapy course, where we monitored our self-talk, and dismissed self-talk that was destructive, or looked for real evidence about our self-talk to see if it was well grounded, to decide to keep or discard.
Finally, I have a Pranic Healing CD, called Meditation of Twin Hearts, by Master Choa Kok Sui. This is a very powerful self-healing meditation, that quickly gives the body a big dose of positive energy, by imagining all the parts of my body being full of white light and being healthy, and by sending out this positive energy to bless our whole planet (good karma). I call it self-talk with white light. I would recommend this CD to anyone fighting any type of illness.
I have since combined all these experiences since I realized how powerful they are individually, let alone the effect when combined. The results are quite amazing. I can take myself from feeling very ill and full of confusion, to feeling completely relaxed and on purpose, all with a few exercises of self-talk of various forms.
When I read amazing stories of people that survived severe illness by using mindpower, I realize that much of that is through the above elements of self-talk. It is often said that all the answers to our problems can be found inside, so this self-talk is a way to respond to the answers that we find from our subconscious.
The flip side of this paints a very clear story of how people can be quickly overcome by illness. Sometimes when I get sick, I notice how I keep on telling myself how sick I am or feel, which almost guarantees I will stay ill, with all the negative energy I impose into my body. Where I may legitimately be sick, had I used positive self-talk to improve the vital energy in my body wanting to become healthy and starting that healing process, instead I become far more ill.
In summary, there are a lot of ways to obtain self-healing through self-talk of various forms.”
That’s all for this week. My thanks to both Glenn and Sheila for their contributions.
Health and Blessings!
