Yoga As A Healing Art by Kristy Caruso
Yoga is an ancient philosophy, dating back almost 5,000 years. Its current popularity proves it’s timelessness, and the benefits of this practice have never been so needed as they are in today’s modern society. Chronic pain, stress and anxiety are more common than ever before, with millions of people (adults and children) turning to medications for relief. These medications carry with them serious side effects, without ever addressing the root of the problems themselves.
People often turn to Yoga when all else has failed. Others come to compliment their existing treatments, and find the benefits to far exceed what they originally came for. The belief in Yoga, is that the body has it’s own latent ability to heal itself; not just the physical body, but our mind, emotions and our spirit, which science has now proved are undeniably linked. Through strengthening and stretching our muscles and bones, we also positively affect every system of the body; digestive, endocrine, urinary, nervous and circulatory. Through mindful, deeper breathing we not only oxygenate the entire body, we calm our overactive minds and soothe our nervous system. So Yoga becomes much more than a series of poses and exercises, but a way to address our entire being, coming away feeling refreshed, vital and calm in our hearts.
What’s best is that Yoga is for everyone. Forget the idea that you must be extremely flexible or strong to try Yoga; patience, self-acceptance and positive intentions are more accurate prerequisites. The practice of Yoga can be tailored to each individual, regardless of age, body type or physical ailment. It is wise to check with your doctor to make sure that you are cleared of any immediate concerns, and always inform an instructor of any recent surgeries or injuries. The idea is to work within your limits, to discover what is possible on any given day, and believe in the power of your intentions. Although the poses themselves are very powerful tools for healing, Yoga is a philosophy that extends far beyond the physical. Within each of us is an endless source of joy and wellness; Yoga helps peel away the obstacles to that inner source, revealing a radiance that stays with us long after we’ve stepped off the mat.
Many people in today’s society find that their overscheduled lives leave little time to focus on their wellness with any sort of regularity. Attending Yoga classes, or maintaining a daily practice seems overwhelming. The truth is, if we don’t make the time to attend to our well being, our bodies and our minds will eventually let us know in the form of disease and chronic unhappiness. Yoga is a complete system of health that includes healthy dietary choices, movement and meditation, and an awareness of how we interact with the people and environment around us. Below are some Yogic ideas to help you awaken your awareness and tap into your natural abilities to find balance within.
1. Mountain Pose: This is the foundation of all other Yoga poses. Simply stand with your feet below your hips and begin to align your joints over each other until you feel a sense of balance and stability throughout the whole body. Let your shoulders press down and back, and extend through the top of your head as you press down through your feet. Once balanced, breathe through your nose and simply notice what you feel. Poor posture can lead to poor functioning of our entire bodies. This pose can help rewire the body to stand tall again. Try it anywhere!
2. Calming breath: Sit on the floor or on a chair, and let your spine lift tall, opening your chest and relaxing the shoulders down. Breathing through your nose, let your breath deepen and lengthen. Counting quietly in your mind, let your inhale and exhale be equal in length. Notice how your breath feels, where it travels in the body, and keep the mind clear as you simply breath in and out.
3. Moderate meals: When eating a meal, imagine leaving 1/3 of your stomach empty, filling 1/3 with food, and 1/3 with water. Eat slowly, chew well and eat in calm atmospheres. Of course fresh foods, minimally processed and free of chemicals are best.
4. Open your heart: Yes, kind thoughts keep the flow of prana (life force energy) moving, and angry, hateful thoughts restricts the flow of energy in the body. Try noticing your inner dialogue and take a deep breath when your thoughts become toxic. Simply replace harmful thoughts with kinder ones! “May you be happy”, “May you be at peace”…the more we extend love, the more we feel an inner serenity that can’t be shaken by the storms that rage around us.
Almost every community now has Yoga classes. Like seeking out a chiropractor or accountant, it’s best to find an instructor that you resonate well with. The style of Yoga differs with each teacher, and you may have to try a few places before you find the type of class that suits you. If classes are too daunting, there are hundreds of videos and books out there that can give you a base of knowledge to start you off. No matter how you choose to practice, Yoga asks us to honor our bodies, to access ourselves honestly from moment to moment, and to practice with peaceful intentions. When practiced regularly, Yoga can bring calm, vitality and balance back to our lives. Regardless of what challenges life presents us, Yoga teaches us that there is always a divine light within that can radiate out and carry us through, with strength, grace and love in our hearts.

Self-Tests for Detecting Food Allergies
(adapted from Health Self-Assessment Tests, available at http://www.1healthyworld.com/freeReports)
Food allergies are quite common, yet very often are not considered, let along detected, by conventional physicians when treating chronic health conditions. The following questionnaire can help you assess whether you have food allergies, and the pulse test that follows it can provide further evidence as to whether or not you are allergic or sensitive to the foods you eat.
Food Allergy Questionnaire
Developed by naturopathic physician Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., of London, England, this series of queries can help you determine if you have a food allergy. If your answer is “no” or “never” to any question, give yourself a score of zero for that particular question; the other scores are provided with the remaining questions.
Do you suffer from unnatural fatigue? (Score 1 if occasionally, 2 if regularly, meaning 3x/week or more.)
Do you sometimes experience wei∼ght fluctuations of four or more pounds in a single day, accompanied by puffiness of the face, ankles, or fingers? (Score 1 if infrequently, 2 if more than once a month.)
Do you have hot flashes (apart from menopause) or find yourself sweating for no obvious reason? (Score 1 if infrequently, 2 if several times a week or more.)
Does your pulse race or your heart pound strongly for no obvious reason? (Score 1 if infrequently, 2 if several times a week or more.)
Do you have a history of food intolerance, causing any symptoms at all? (Score 2 if your answer is yes.)
Do you crave bread, sugary foods, pasta, milk, chocolate, coffee, or tea? (Score 2 if your answer is yes.)
Do you suffer from migraine or severe headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, eczema, depression, asthma, or muscle aches? (Score 2 if your answer is yes.)
The most anyone could score on this test would be 14. “If your score is 5 or higher, there is a strong likelihood that food allergies are part of your symptom picture,” Dr. Chaitow says.
The Pulse Test
This is a relatively simple test developed by Arthur Coca, M.D., a pioneer in the field of environmental medicine. Dr. Coca based his test on many years of clinical observations of patients, during which he noticed that a common symptom of many food allergies is increased heart rate. Although the pulse test can help identify food allergies, you should not conclude you are allergy-free if the foods you test do not affect your pulse rate. The problem is that not all food allergens will increase heart rate. “The weakness of this particular approach lies in the frank possibility that not every allergic reaction will necessarily produce the biochemical responses that result in a faster heartbeat,” says Ralph Golan, M.D.
The pulse test is easy to self-administer and involves simply recording your pulse rate before and after meals. Stephen Langer, M.D., observes that “certain of my patients who use the pulse test have seen their heartbeat rise from 72 to as high as 180 after they have eaten an allergenic food.” To take the test, follow these simple instructions:
Find the pulse point on your wrist by placing the second finger of the opposite hand on the inside of your wrist.
Count the beats (pulses) for six seconds and multiply the number by ten; this is your resting pulse.
Record your resting pulse first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.
Record your pulse 30 minutes before each meal, then 30 minutes and 60 minutes after each meal.
If the difference between the morning pulse and either of the two after-meal rates is more than 12 to 16 beats, chances are you have a food allergy. Once you have identified a meal that triggers a rise in your pulse rate, you can begin testing individual foods eaten during that meal. However, in some cases, you may find that your resting pulse is higher than your after-meal pulse or that your before-meal pulse is higher than your after-meal pulse. If you observe such a pattern, it is possible that dust or some other airborne allergen is interfering with your test.

Another Look At Mind-Body by Jon Rappoport
Sending “health thoughts” to your body is the simplest notion of the mind-body connection. However, when these thoughts are transmitted with insistence, pressure and force, the body often reacts as if an invader has just entered the gates.
On top of that, the mind is often “shaped” as a series of closed systems. Therefore, it is sending signals to the body that have to do with health as some kind of organized system. This is not very effective.
Health actually has much more to do with free-flowing energy that is not part of any system.
The body is waiting for free-flowing energy. It responds to it with a change in its functioning. That change elevates the body to another level. Health becomes a radiating power.
The body is made for action. It needs rest, but the rest is a period of gathering forces for the next action. When action is free-flowing and creative, a feedback loop is built: the body puts out energy and gets free-flowing energy back. This satisfying state of affairs promotes a “body confidence” and better overall health.
This loop could be compared to the work of a very good stage actor. The actor expends a great deal of energy in his performance. The audience feeds back appreciation. The actor feels inspired to extend the range of his performance. Etc., etc.
For all the faults in erecting a pantheon of gods and goddesses who lived on Mt. Olympus, the Greeks did invent these gods as radiant specimens of action, very wide-ranging action, and free-flowing energy---and it’s no accident that the Greeks took pride in their own health. The whole notion of energy flowing in and out of the body was a cardinal part of this instinctive grasp of health.
