New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week, you will find the first in a series of articles about cancer by researcher and brain cancer survivor Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, author of an excellent new book called Anticancer: A New Way of Life. This week, Dr. Servan-Schrieber explains the importance of exercise for preventing and treating cancer.

I’m also reprinting an article I wrote a few years ago entitled Creating What You Want During Times of Challenge, since for many of us these days are challenging indeed. And you’ll also find self-care tips for preventing and reversing carpal tunnel syndrome.

As always, please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe. Thanks!

Exercise Against Cancer by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PHD

Physical activity, even just walking 30 minutes six times a week, confers a very important protection against cancer, before we get the disease, or during its treatment. Jacqueline discovered this for herself. To her astonishment.

Physical activity acts on many of the biological factors that can slow down cancer growth. It reduces blood sugar and insulin peaks. It reduces fat stores from which common chemicals leak into our body. It reduces estrogen stimulation. And it even stimulates our immune system’s ability to fight disease.

Some hospitals now systematically prescribe exercise along with chemotherapy. Not only to combat cancer directly, but also to reduce the common fatigue that affects most patients under treatment.

Jacqueline was fifty-four when she found out she had a rare cancer of the fallopian tube. Her physician told her frankly that her chances for survival were slim, but that they would try every possible treatment. After surgery she started six months of chemotherapy to limit the risk of metastases. But her oncologist didn’t stop there.

Though some of his colleagues didn’t fully “believe” in it, the scientific data about the importance of exercise seemed compelling to him. “Jacqueline," he said, "This may be a little hard, but when you begin chemotherapy, you’ll also have to exercise.” He recommended a karate club that specialized in looking after cancer patients.

In the class, the young master pointed out that she was standing bent over, looking down at the floor. Jacqueline examined herself in the mirror and saw that she had taken on the look of a “little old woman.” Standing at her side, the master then demonstrated the striking motions and the traditional shout, the “kaï,” rising from the inner reaches of his body. Jacqueline thought “this isn’t for me!” She had never fought in her life, not even to say “no” to her family or friends, who had long taken advantage of her.  But, by the end of the first session, she had pushed and pulled on her body in ways she hadn’t known were possible. She had struck the air with her hands and her feet. She had shouted. She had sensed her strength. The most surprising was that thanks to this physically grueling session, she felt herself perk up.

She persisted through the six cycles of chemotherapy, attending classes twice a week. Her exhaustion was sometimes so great that she had visions of death. On the way to the club, in the subway, she was often nauseated. Or she would have trouble standing up straight. But she didn’t give up. In the end, after each session she was less tired than before it began.

Four and a half years after her initial diagnosis, her oncologist told her she was free of disease. Surviving her type of cancer was extremely rare and meant that the disease had been vanquished. But her new physical relationship to her body had become a way of keeping the disease at bay. Twice a week, in her white kimono, she takes up the posture of combat. She stands straight, her gaze steady. She hears herself saying firmly to the ghost of her cancer, “Let’s have it out,” in case it should have the vaguest thought of returning.

Creating What You Want During Times of Challenge

Many of you, I’m sure, share my perception that events in the world are becoming increasingly volatile and precarious. Not only can we see this in our human endeavors, but also in the weather of late.

In such times, and faced with a steady influx of reports of global tragedies, economic uncertainties, political shenanigans (on both sides of the political aisle), and so forth, all brought to us “every hour on the hour” by a media obsessed with reporting negativity, it is easy to slip into despondency or a sense of “what’s the use?” futility. This is an all-too common and understandable reaction when times seem so uncertain and challenging. Yet such a reaction is guaranteed to only escalate the feelings of unease that provoked it.

I’m writing about this today because I am just as susceptible to such reactions as anyone else, and there is a lot that is currently unfolding in the world that I am unhappy about. Yet I’ve recognized that, for me at least, remaining upset, despondent, worried, angry, and so forth does absolutely nothing to change things. Instead, it only serves to drag me down in spirit, suppressing my energy and joy. With that realization, I’ve also recognized that I always have a choice in terms of my responses and how I react to the challenges we on our planet are all passing through. I cannot control world events, obviously, yet I can control how I choose to respond to them. And so can everyone else. And the key to doing so, of course, lies in being disciplined and conscious enough to choose to respond from a position of cause instead of effect.

In the many years that I’ve been exploring what healing is and how it occurs, I’ve grown increasingly aware of the interconnectedness of all Life and how inseparably I am a part of every other human being and all else of GOD’s creations. Moreover, I’ve slowly yet surely begun to grasp how, energetically, my thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and desires never occur in a vacuum, Instead, they go out into the “Web of Life,” emitting precisely the type of energy I am choosing to resonate with moment to moment. Often, I react unconsciously, so that energy may be one of anger, sorrow, despondency, and so forth. Yet, when I recognize what I’m doing, I instantly realize the foolishness of such reactions, for, in essence, all I am doing in those moments is further polluting the world with more negatively, and ensuring that it returns to me manifold. (What we think and feel returns to us in increased measure.) So, more than ever before, I am doing my best to focus on resonating with thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that are energetically positive. This by no means implies that I no longer get angry or sad. Of course not. Nor is getting angry or sad necessarily inappropriate. In fact, oftentimes, they are the most appropriate and positive emotions we can choose, and crucial to accepting and acting from our personal power. (For more on this subject, I highly recommend the eBook Mind Mastery Meditations by Dr. Valerie Hunt – see the link below.) The key is to feel the emotion while allowing it to run its course, instead of holding onto it all day. This helps me remain more energized and connected to the Higher Power that is available to each of us whenever we choose to call upon it.

In addition, I am discovering more and more how absolutely essential it is for me to remain focused on “the dream I would see as real,” meaning my goals and dreams, both for myself, and for the world. As Gandhi, St. Francis, and many other great teachers have said, in order to see the changes we desire in the world, we must first commit ourselves to being that change. If we want peace, we must be peaceful. If we want love, we must be loving. Choosing to act in this fashion is not easy and I fail at it all the time. Even so, I know that I cannot shirk my responsibility in this regard.

So, how can we remain anchored in our focus? For me, it all begins and ends with my imagination. By allowing myself to imagine what I want to create in my life—truly envisioning it in as much detail as I can—and holding it in my mind’s eye as if it is already my reality, I am discovering that I can more quickly and easily manifest my goals. Moreover, making a regular habit of practicing this kindles my emotions and keeps me buoyed in feelings of joy and happiness. This, in turn, provides me with greater energy, so that I am better able to keep working on all I need to do externally to “make my dreams come true.”

What does this have to do with being healthy? For me, quite a bit. The more that I focus on being healthy, the healthier and more energetic I find myself being. It’s really that simple. And that difficult. Which is precisely why some people are able to heal themselves of serious illness, including cancer, solely through the power of their visualizations. Those that succeed really get involved with the creative process that is required to activate the imagination in all of its glory.

For many of us, working with the imagination can present a huge challenge, simply because we have forgotten how to use it. Instead, we are more focused on doing what the world expects of us, with no time to set aside for “daydreaming.” In fact, we are trained to set aside daydreams—and with them, our imagination—almost from the time we are born. Yet, as children, most of us had vivid imaginations and thrilled ourselves with the so-called dream worlds our imaginings gained us entry into. We haven’t lost that ability. We’ve simply allowed it to run dormant.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Reversing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome refers to compression of a nerve in the wrist (median) that produces numbness, tingling, and sometimes pain. Weakness and tingling of the first three fingers and thumb may also occur.

Symptoms: tingling of palm surface of hands, first three fingers, often worse at night or with driving. Can also be associated with tingling, burning, and pain of entire arm, neck and hip, and thigh. May be on one or both sides.

Occurrence: More common in women after the age of 35.

Consider: Conditions that can create swelling or fluid shifts (contribute to pressure on nerve) such as pregnancy, low thyroid, occupations that require forceful or repetitive wrist movements, vitamin B6 deficiencies, nerve disorders, or compression of the nerve root of the sixth cervical vertebra due to misalignment of the neck, muscular spasm, osteoarthritis, disk disease, or tumor. May be secondary to other wrist conditions.

Special Notes: Treatment varies and symptoms may improve in one week or take several months. Often carpal tunnel can be successfully treated without surgery, although sometimes surgery is necessary. According to Steven Bailey, N.D., of Portland, Oregon, carpal tunnel is often a misdiagnosis of thoracic outlet compression syndrome, in which pressure to lower cervical and upper thoracic nerves results in dysfunction of the tissues and nerves associated with the brachial nerves.

Self-Care

Diet: Whole foods diet. Limit protein intake. Eliminate foods high in yellow dyes. Good foods to focus on are whole grains, seeds, and nuts, soybeans, fresh salmon, brewer’s yeast, molasses, liver, wheat bran and germ, and cod. Avoid stressor foods that deplete the body’s level of B6 such as excessive consumption of sugars, caffeine, and processed grains and corn.

Nutritional Therapy: • Vitamin B6 • Vitamin B complex • Magnesium • Essential fatty acids • Folic acid • Bromelain • Coenzyme Q10 • Kelp • Manganese • Protease enzyme formula • Pycnogenol • Zinc • Thyroid hormone

People with carpal tunnel syndrome often have a large deficiency of vitamin B6, or have lifestyle factors that inhibit B6 metabolism such as stress, or ingesting Yellow Dye No. 5 and tartrazine derivatives. It may also be that a deficiency of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) may cause a pyridoxine-responsive neuropathy (nerve disorder). Treatment with B6 may relieve the symptoms in many cases, eliminating the need for surgery. Daily dosage ranges from 25-300 mg, depending on the person’s biochemistry. Caution: Pyridoxine supplementation may create a nerve disorder (sensory neuropathy) in dosages as low as 300 mg, if taken daily for long periods. Most of the cases of vitamin B6 toxicity have been reported with dosages from 2-5 g per day.

Acupressure: To relieve carpal tunnel wrist pain, firmly press the fingertips between the bones of the forearm, two finger-widths below the wrist crease. Grasp these points firmly to strengthen the wrist joint and relieve the carpal tunnel pain. Repeat three times daily.

Aromatherapy: Marjoram, lavender, or eucalyptus oil, applied to the areas of pain.

Flower Essences:
Rescue Remedy to help alleviate stress.

Herbs:Anti-inflammatory herbs effectively support the broader treatment. A simple approach involves combining equal parts of meadowsweet and willow bark tinctures and taking one teaspoonful of this mixture three times a day. Other useful herbs include aloe vera, butcher’s broom, corn silk, devil’s claw, cayenne (capsicum), ginkgo, gravel root, marshmallow, skullcap, turmeric (curcumin), wintergreen oil, yarrow, and yucca.

Homeopathy: Aconite, Arsen alb., Ignatia, Nat mur., Chamomilla, Colchicum. Homeopathic treatment tends to be constitutional in nature and is therefore normally long-term, but usually successful.

Lifestyle: Avoid repetitive wrist movement. Monoamine oxidase inhibitor anti-depressant drugs can create a deficiency in vitamin B6 and should be avoided if possible.

Professional Care—The following therapies should only be provided by a qualified health professional:   Acupuncture, Applied Kinesiology, Chiropractic, Craniosacral Therapy, Light Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Orthomolecular Medicine, Osteopathy, and Prolotherapy. Detoxification Therapymay also be indicated, depending on the condition of the person.
