New This Issue
Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week, I’m excerpting an article that is included in a cancer report I’m writing that will be available later this year. It’s on the impressive work by Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and the successes he’s had treating cancer using the antineoplaston therapy he developed. I’ve had the honor of meeting Dr. Burzynski more than once, and have toured his research clinic. I’ve also met a number of people who are living happy, healthy lives because of him, after previously being given up for dead by their mainstream cancer doctors. In my opinion, he’s one of the giants in the field of medicine today and after you read my article, you’ll understand why I say this
Also in this issue is part one of an interview between myself and Dr. Philip Domenico, an expert in the field of clinical nutrition. It’s based on Phil’s interest in The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide, a book I co-wrote with Dr. Susan Brown.
You’ll also find an article on the herb hawthorn and why it’s so valuable for a healthy heart.
As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

The Burzynski Breakthrough for Cancer
“This is the treatment I would try if I discovered I had cancer.”
Those are the words of Dr. Julian Whitaker, editor and writer of the Health & Healing Newsletter, and one of the world’s leading authorities on alternative and integrative medicine. The treatment he is referring to is known as antineoplaston therapy, developed by Stanislaw Burzynski, MD, PhD.
Why would Dr. Whitaker make such a bold statement?
Because it works!
And, as you are about to discover, it has achieved many successful outcomes for patients whose cancer had progressed to the point where their oncologists told them that they should put their affairs in order because they only had a few months to live.
In addition, antineoplaston therapy has shown great promise for treating brain cancers, which conventional cancer treatments are usually powerless to reverse. In fact, the effectiveness of antineoplaston therapy for treating brain cancers was even verified by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), when representatives of the agency visited Dr. Burzynski’s clinic in Houston, Texas in October 1991. During that visit, the NCI officials examined Dr. Burzynski’s the medical records of eight patients who had come to him to be treated for advanced and inoperable brain tumors. Based on the NCI’s examination of this documentation, on January 6, 1992, the agency issue an official statement that verified that, of the eight patients, seven of them had recovered. The statement read: “The National cancer Institute reviewed 7 cases of primary brain tumors that were treated by Dr. Burzynski with antineoplastons A10 and AS2-1 and concluded that antitumor responses occurred.”
Based on the NCI’s findings, you would think that antineoplaston therapy would by now be widely available as a treatment for brain cancers, especially since conventional care has so little to offer patients with brain tumors.
Unfortunately, it isn’t, largely because of a vendetta mounted against Dr. Burzynski by both the NCI and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that began in 1983 and which, if successful, would have seen Dr. Burzynski locked up in jail for 300 years! But before you learn more about this vendetta, let me share with you more information about who Dr. Burzynski is and how and why antineoplaston therapy can save lives when other cancer therapies so often fail.
Dr. B: A Brief Biography
Dr. Burzynski was born in Lublin, Poland in 1943 during World War Two, during which time his father, a school teacher, was arrested and sentenced to two years in prison for refusing to stop teaching Jewish children. Following the war, Burzynski grew up under Communist rule. During this same period, his brother Zygmunt was active in the anti-Communist underground, which led to him being shot and killed in 1948. These experiences shaped Burzynski’s belief that “you must never let [people in authority] defeat you in your own core.”
Despite such brutal hardships, Burzynski was determined to pursue his education. After graduating from Lublin’s top secondary school, he entered Lublin Medical Academy. In 1967, he received his medical degree at the age of 24, graduating first in his class of 250 medical students. During this same year, he made his first important discovery when he identified a specific type of naturally occurring amino acid derivatives known as peptides in the human body. After studying this class of peptides he concluded that they control cancer growth. He also discovered that there is a marked deficiency of these peptides in cancer patients, compared to healthy people.
In 1968, while continuing his research, Burzynski earned his PhD in biochemistry, becoming one of the youngest Polish citizens to ever hold both an MD and a PhD. As his research continued, he discovered that, in addition to its immune system, the human body has another disease-fighting system that operates in parallel to it, which he named the Biochemical Defense System (BDS), which we will discuss in more detail later on.
Around this time, Dr. Burzynski started to receive pressure to join the Polish Communist party. As a result of his refusal to do so, he quickly found that, if he wanted to be able to continue his research, he would have to leave his homeland. He did so in 1970, emigrating to the United States, where he quickly obtained the position of assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
From that time to 1977, his research into cancer and the class of peptides he’d discovered was sponsored and partially funded by the National Cancer Institute. During this time, he wrote or co-wrote 16 scientific papers, including five concerning his research on peptides and their effect on human cancer. By then, he had named these peptides antineoplastons due to their ability to help correct and normalize cancer cells. (Cancer is also known as neoplasms. Antineoplastons literally means “anti-cancer”.
In May 1977, Dr. Burzynski received a Certificate of Appreciation from Baylor College of Medicine, commending him for completing five years of dedicated service and acknowledging his contributions made to the “Advancement of Medical Education, Research, and Health Care.” That same month, he founded his own clinic in Houston where he has since treated over 10,000 patients.
Dr. B, as he is affectionately known by his patients, is also the president of the Burzynski Research Institute, where he continues to research on antineoplastons. He is also a
member of numerous renowned medical associations, including the American and World Medical Associations, American Association for Cancer Research, Society for Neuroscience, Royal Medical Association (U.K.), Academy of Medical Ethics, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. In addition, he has received many prestigious awards from various medical, educational and governmental institutions, and he holds more than 224 patents in 35 countries and has published 276 scientific papers.
On Oct. 23, 2004, the Polish American Congress presented Dr. B with the Cross of Merit Award on behalf of the Polish Government for his “pioneering research in cancer treatment.” Among those in attendance for the presentation ceremony was the Republic of Poland’s former president Lech Walesa. Two years later, Pope John Paul II personally summoned Dr. Burzynski and his wife Barbara to his summer residence outside of Rome in order to bless them and wish them luck in their upcoming legal battle with the FDA.
As a direct result of Dr. Burzynski’s pioneering research, many other scientists have also researched antineoplastons, including researchers at the National Cancer Institute, the Medical College of Georgia, the Imperial College of Science and Technology of London, the University of Kurume Medical School in Japan, the University of Turin Medical School in Italy, and many others. Today, several hundred publications have been published on antineoplastons by scientists not affiliated with either Dr. Burzynski or the Burzynski Research Institute.
Based on all of the above, it’s clear that Dr. Burzynski is a very accomplished scientist. How ironic, then, that he has faced persecution from the US government for his life-saving work on a scale that he never was subjected to while he lived under a Communist regime!
A Remarkable Recovery
I first learned of Dr. Burzynski in 1992, while I served as editor and writer for my friend Burton Goldberg as we created the landmark health encyclopedia, Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide. Soon after I began working with Burton, he introduced me to Neil Dublinsky, whom Burton had hired as a consultant to help us prepare the Guide’s cancer chapter. Neil was (and remains) a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic person and I was repeatedly impressed by what he knew about cancer and all that is necessary to recover from it. One day, over lunch, I asked him how he’d learned so much. He told me that he’d had to because cancer had almost killed him.
I was shocked to learn this because of how healthy and energetic Neil looked (as he still does today). He shared his story with me, then told me that Dr. Burzynski had saved his life. I felt that story of Neil’s recovery was so important that I included a detailed account of it in both editions of the Guide. Briefly, here’s what happened.
In November 1987, Neil, fresh out of law school, was beginning his career as a lawyer when he was diagnosed with an advanced case (stage IV) of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His doctor discovered a that he had a large, bulky tumor that had spread throughout his entire abdominal area, causing serious fluid buildup in his lungs. “I was shocked when I got the diagnosis,” Neil told me, and was in extreme physical pain. My doctor told me I had to undergo chemotherapy if I wanted to live. I didn’t know any better, so I did it.”
Neil endured four months of chemotherapy treatments consisting of an aggressive combination of six different drugs. This was followed by a three-week course of radiation treatments. Afterward, follow-up testing revealed that no progress had been made. Neil still had cancer, and now he was also suffering from a wide range of serious side-effects caused by his treatment, including total hair loss, severe gastrointestinal problems, near physical incapacitation because of how exhausted the treatments had made him.
By now other doctors had been called in to aid in Neil’s treatment. They ordered Neil to have a bone marrow transplant of his own bone marrow, which Neil and his parents consented to. “This was the worst time of my life, but once it was over, it looked like I would be all right.”
But he wasn’t! Only four months after his bone marrow transplant, his doctors discovered a new tumor had formed in his pelvic area that was compressing his right kidney. He was told that there was little more that could be done for him. As far as his doctors were concerned, Neil’s cancer was terminal and he did not have long to live. All they had left to offer him was another round of even harsher chemotherapy drugs in the hope that they would buy him a little more time.
Rather than accept their prognosis and any further chemotherapy, Neil took matters into his own hands. Long before the advent of the Internet, he put his lawyerly skills to bear and began researching everything he could find on alternative cancer treatments. He read every book on the subject he could get his hands on, and began contacting cancer support groups with information about alternative treatments. And that was how Neil learned about Dr. Burzynski’s antineoplaston therapy.
”I spoke with ten of Dr. Burzynski’s former patients,” Neil told me. “They had all responded well to his therapy and had suffered from similar kinds of cancer as my own. They spoke of Dr. Burzynski in glowing terms and encouraged me to see him. I decided to follow their advice, but ultimately my decision to go was a leap of faith, because my doctors’ attitudes about alternative therapies were dismissive. I figured if I was going to die, I was going to die fighting.”
One year after his initial diagnosis, in December 1988, Neil entered Dr. Burzynski’s clinic to begin receiving antineoplaston therapy. “The first thing I noticed, “Neil says,” was that the treatment was not painful.” Within weeks, his biochemical profile improved, along with his liver and kidney function. His energy level also improved and—most importantly—his tumor steadily began to shrink.
Neil continued his treatment for ten months, as an outpatient. This was followed by a period in which he received four injections of antineoplastons a day, together with oral capsules. Six months later, Neil was in complete remission. As a precaution, he continued to take the oral capsules for 18 more months. Today, 20 years after he first met Dr. Burzynski, Neal remains in good health.
I was so impressed by Neil’s account that, after I completed work on the first edition of the Guide in 1994, I drove to Houston, Texas in order to meet with Dr. Burzynski myself. As I entered his clinic, I was struck by how warm and inviting it was, unlike most conventional hospitals and cancer clinic. I also noticed the demeanor of his staff. Everyone I saw exuded an aura of good cheer and confidence, which, I soon realized when Dr. Burzynski came to greet me, reflected his own demeanor.
Given how busy he is, I only spent one hour with Dr. Burzysnki before he had to get back to work. But it was an hour well spent. In his office, he told me immediately that he did not claim to have a cure for cancer, telling me that nobody could make such a claim because of how every cancer patients needs are different. He also said, “I don’t offer false hope,” telling me that he could tell very quickly whether or not his treatments were going to be helpful for his patients. He determined this by examining their blood after they received antineoplastons for three weeks. It the treatments are working, the patients’ bloodstream will show an indication of progress.
It was obvious to me from the moment we began our conversation, that Dr. B is a brilliant scientist. But what impressed me even more was how humble he is despite his achievements, and how devoted he is to helping others. And his infectious good humor is, to me, a sign of someone who has truly found his calling in life. When I left his clinic, I knew that I had met one of the true innovative thinkers when it comes to treating cancer.

The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide: A Conversation with Larry Trivieri, Jr by Philip Domenico, PhD.
I had the distinct pleasure of reading a paperback book by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr. called the Alkaline-Acid Food Guide. It is a short read and quick reference on the extent to which foods affect the pH balance in our bodies. The book is based on compiled research from a number of important scientists who spent their life documenting the pH effect of thousands of foods and drinks. The authors do an admirable job of summarizing all this effort in a very simple manner for everyone to appreciate. Nevertheless, the 80-plus pages of food tables in their book are very useful even to professionals.
Their major premise is that the modern diet tilts the body’s pH toward the acid range, which has negative health consequences. The kidneys, lungs and skin must work overtime to balance body pH toward the alkaline. They do so by borrowing alkaline minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) from bone and tissue. Muscle is also broken down to obtain alkalizing amino acids (i.e., glutamine). Over the long haul, bones weaken and muscles waste away to compensate, and aging is accelerated. Osteoporosis, muscle loss, kidney stone formation, joint and back problems are among the conditions associated with even a slightly acidic state. The authors also describe many other problems and chronic conditions that could result from what they term chronic, low-grade acidosis.
This book has already made a major impact on my eating habits, and I was already a health nut. Yet, it left me with a number of questions. Since Larry Trivieri and I are acquaintances, I thought it would be fun to have a public dialogue with him. – Philip Domenico, PhD.
Dr. Phil: Excuse my excitement, but I find this perspective on health fascinating, and very practical. I realize that you are not the first to introduce this notion of pH imbalance, but no one has ever made it as practical as you and Dr. Brown have. The first thing I did after reading your book was to make a list of the most acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods as a personal guide. Then I went out and bought every high alkaline-forming food I could find.
Larry: So, what have you observed thus far?
Dr. Phil: I believe that I may be on the way to solving some old, nagging health issues with your guidance. The jury is still not out yet, but I do feel more energetic and happy, and I think that my allergies are not as bad as before. I’ll know for sure come ragweed and dust-mite season. You say in the book that the benefits increase over time with consistency. I’m looking forward to that.
Larry: As with any health enhancing measure, eating according to the principles Dr. Susan Brown and I share in our book will have a cumulative effect in terms of the benefits people typically experience when they shift their diets to eating foods that are primarily alkalizing. Initially, many people won’t necessarily experience benefits that they notice. Even so, Susan’s research shows that benefits are occurring. Over time, as the body is no longer burdened with a steady diet of acidifying foods, more oxygen and nutrients are able to be delivered to the its cells and tissues, and before long the benefits truly become noticeable. Common examples of such benefits include greater energy levels throughout the day, improved digestion, more restorative sleep, and less aches and pains, and so forth.
Dr. Phil: According to your book, the most pervasive high acid-forming foods in the modern diet are carbohydrates. People should restrict these foods, if they are intent on balancing their pH (and losing weight). Specifically, under refined carbohydrates, you list bagels, biscuits, croissants, bread, sugar (including brown sugar), cakes, corn flakes, farina, noodles, brownies, cookies, corn syrup, croutons, crackers (including saltines), cupcakes, donuts, ice cream, pies, puddings, jams, jellies, pasta, pancakes, pastries, pizza, potato or tortilla chips, and waffles as highly acid forming. Is that a fair assessment?
Larry: Yes. And unfortunately, these are precisely the kinds of foods that are so prevalent in the so-called standard American diet, which goes a long way towards explaining why our nation is afflicted by so many chronic degenerative diseases. Since you mentioned sugar, I’d like to point out that sugar substitutes such as honey and maple syrup are not as acid forming, and that organic sucanat, brown rice syrup and molasses are alkalizing. Additionally, such sweeteners are more mineral-rich than the sugars that are so common in our standard diet, and it’s the mineral content of foods that is one of the primary factors that differentiates whether foods have an alkalizing or acidifying effect in the body.
Dr. Phil: Certainly, excessive carbohydrates, particularly refined carbs, are known to be detrimental to insulin and heart health, but few experts speak to their effect on pH. What exactly do these foods do to tip the balance?
Larry: They create a bigger acid burden inside the body. This, in turn, forces the body to draw upon its alkali mineral stores, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, in an attempt to neutralize acid buildup. Most healthy people can afford to eat carbs so long as they aren’t refined and are consumed in moderation. But when refined carbs are eaten on a regular basis, chronic acidity, or acidosis occurs, eventually causing the body’s supply of alkali mineral stores to significantly diminish. These minerals are primarily stored in the bones, which explains why osteoporosis and other bone conditions are so prevalent in our culture, whereas, as Susan has verified firsthand in her travels and investigation of other cultures around the world, such disease are virtually nonexistent among peoples whose diets are traditionally alkalizing.
Dr. Phil: Most protein sources are acid forming according to your table. The high acid-forming proteins are beef, bacon, veal, hard cheese, mozzarella, swordfish, lobster, mussels and shrimp. Can you explain why this is so? Also, people are not about to give up these comfort foods. How do you recommend balancing this acid effect in a meal?
Larry: We discuss the answers to these questions in depth in our book. The short answer is that neither Susan nor I advocate eliminating protein foods from your diet. Despite the health claims made by proponents of vegetarianism, research shows that few people are suited to such diets, and that for the majority of people optimal health depends on a daily supply of protein-rich foods in the diet. The problem is that in our culture, many people are consuming too much protein foods each day. Excessive protein in the diet adds to the body’s acidic burdens just as refined and excessive carbs do. The solution is to make sure that you always include lots of alkalizing foods, especially green vegetables and so forth, with your meats, fish and poultry dishes, and to limit the size of your protein portions. For most people, a healthy portion equates to the size of their fist. Anything above that is usually too much.
Ideally, each meal should consist of between 60 to 80 percent alkalizing foods, and only 20 to 40 percent acidifying foods. Susan and I realize that most people are not going to drastically change their eating habits, no matter the scientific evidence that might encourage them to do so. That’s why our book provides so many food charts and tables that contain our nation’s most commonly eaten foods. Using the charts makes it easy for anyone to create predominantly alkalizing meals without having to make too many changes in their eating habits.
Dr. Phil: While whole grains and many animal products (e.g., chicken, eggs, pork) are also acid forming, they are not as bad as white flour and red meat, according to your food tables. Some of these foods are nutrient rich and healthful in many respects, so it’s a relief that they are not highly acid forming. What about organic varieties of these foods? Are organic eggs or chicken any less acid-forming, or organic beef for that matter? One would think that a pasture-raised animal would produce far less acid. Certainly, it is far less inflammatory.
Larry: Organic food choices are always the best bet when it comes to healthy eating. Not only do organic foods contain a higher amount of beneficial nutrients, they are also free of the various additives, including dyes, antibiotics, growth hormones, and other factors that much commercially grown and raised foods contain. All such additives create further acidity in the body, not to mention the many other unhealthy effects they have.
Dr. Phil: What makes fried food so acid forming? And, what does browning or charring foods do to their pH effect?
Larry: These types of cooking methods literally change the chemical composition of foods, making them more difficult to digest and significantly increasing their acidifying effects in the body. In fact, one of the primary reasons browned, charred, and/or fried foods produce inflammation in the body is because of the acidosis that they cause. The interrelationship between acidosis and inflammation is discussed early on in our book because the cooking methods you mention are so common in our culture.
Dr. Phil: I was doing all right until I came upon chocolate in your table. It would have been heaven if it was alkalizing but, alas, it is highly acid forming (as is espresso coffee, another one of my favorites). If these foods are kept to a minimum (one mouthful per day), how much of a high alkaline-forming food, like lime juice or mineral water, would neutralize this small amount?
Larry: I love chocolate too, Phil, and as I’m sure you know, there is a growing body of evidence that shows that chocolate it actually a health food. Similar benefits are also being found for coffee. Again, moderation is the key. I recommend that people who choose to indulge themselves with a bit of chocolate (and for me that means more than a mouthful) simply increase the amount of alkalizing foods they eat for a few days. As for how much alkalizing foods or drinks are needed to maintain balance that depends on the overall health, including acid-alkaline balance, of the individual in question. Obviously, the more acidic a person is, the more alkalizing foods he or she should consume.
Dr. Phil: Forget about it, Larry! Giving up coffee is out of the question. However, I don’t mind switching to alkaline-forming green or herbal tea after my first cup of coffee. On a daily basis, could these hot beverages offset one another?
Larry: Yes, especially if you also drink adequate amounts of healthy water throughout the day.

Improve Your Heart Health With Hawthorn
For centuries, herbalists in Europe and North America have touted the health benefits of hawthorn, a small shrub that is part of the rose family of plants. Also known as [italics] Crataegus species[end italics], hawthorn is a thorny shrub that grows on hillsides and in sunny wooded areas throughout the world. When the plant's flowers bloom in spring, they grow in small clusters, and are white, red, or pink. Small berries, called haws, sprout after the flowers.
During the Middle Ages hawthorn was considered a protection against evil spirits and was hung in doorways of homes for that purpose. Approximately 200 years ago, doctors in America recognized that hawthorn provides a variety of health benefits, including aiding in the recovery of respiratory and circulatory problems. Since that time, the berries and flowers of the hawthorn plant have been found to be natural heart tonics, and today natural healers throughout Europe and North America use hawthorn extracts to strengthen the heart, as well as to treat irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, chest pain, hardening of the arteries, and heart failure.
Research has confirmed that hawthorn is composed of various substances that have strong antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that destroy free radicals -- damaging compounds in the body that alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. As a result, free radicals can contribute to the development of many of health problems, including cancer and heart disease.
Although hawthorn contains many substances that may benefit the heart, two in particular play the most important roles in this regard: flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs). Flavonoids have been shown to help dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow, and protect the blood vessels from damage, while both flavonoids and OPCs provide strong antioxidant benefits. Based on this research into hawthorn's heart-healthy benefits, today, many health care professionals use hawthorn to help protect against heart disease and also to help control high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The primary research on hawthorn in human studies has involved people with heart failure (a condition in which the heart is unable to pump adequate amounts of blood to other organs in the body). A number of studies have shown that hawthorn can significantly improve heart function in such patients, as well as increasing their ability to exercise longer and more easily by reducing fatigue and shortness of breath.
One study found that hawthorn extract administered for two months at a dose of 900 mg/day was as effective as low doses of captropril (a leading heart medication) in improving symptoms of heart failure. Another large study found that a standardized hawthorn extract improved the health of over 950 patients with heart failure. This study compared conventional medications used to treat heart failure with hawthorn taken alone and in addition to the drugs. After two years, the study showed that the related symptoms of heart failure, such as breathing problems, fatigue and heart palpitations, significantly decreased in the patients who took hawthorn alone. Additionally, the patients who took hawthorn with heart medications required less medications for their condition.
Additional research has also shown that hawthorn can help prevent and reverse the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels (atherosclerosis), ease symptoms of angina and other forms of chest pain, reduce high cholesterol levels, and reduce and protect against high blood pressure.
Hawthorn is available at most health food stores as non-standardized and standardized capsules, liquid and solid liquid extracts, and tinctures. A tea can also be made from dried hawthorn leaves, flowers, and berries, although its taste is bitter. The American Herbal Products Association gives hawthorn a class 1 safety rating, meaning that it is a very safe herb. However, before beginning to use hawthorn, be sure to discuss your desire to do so with your doctor. That's because hawthorn, like all other medicinal herbs, contains substances that can adversely react with other herbs, supplements, or medications. Therefore hawthorn should be used under the supervision of a health care provider skilled in the use of botanical (herbal) medicine, especially if you are already on heart medications. In addition, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should not use hawthorn, and those who do use it should have their health monitored every six to eight weeks to determine whether or not hawthorn is improving their health.

The Burzynski Breakthrough by Thomas Elias. This book, the title of which inspired by own article on Dr. Burzynski above, is an excellent investigation of Dr. Burzynski’s life and pioneering research, as well as a thorough expose of the US government’s attempt to imprison Dr. B because of the threat he poses to the medical establishment. (I’ll share more on that next issue in Part 2 of my own article.)
Galileo’s Lawyer by Richard A Jaffe, Esq. This book, written by the lawyer who successfully defeated the attempts of the US government to put Dr. Burzynski in jail, recounts that case, as well as his other cases defending alternative physicians. It’s very well-written and provides an excellent understanding of the opposition pioneering physicians face from our own government, as well as various medical boards and institutions.
Rule by Secrecy by Jim Marrs. This is one of the most exhaustive and even handed investigations of the behind-the-scenes individuals and organizations who have influenced world events for centuries. Utterly fascinating!
