New This Issue

Welcome to the first issue of The Health Plus Letter for 2008 and a very belated Happy New Year! As I slowly ease into my 6th year of writing this ezine, I am turning this issue over to Dr. Norm Shealy and Jon Rappoport. Dr. Shealy is, in my estimation, one of the most pioneering physicians in the world. In his typically blunt manner, he weighs in below on the scams behind antidepressants and statins and I encourage you to pay attention to what he says. Jon Rappoport is I greatly admire and though his two articles below are not health-related per se, I find them timely and important, given that I share his view that the primary drama being played out around the world today, as ever, is that being the tradition of individual freedom (which includes personal responsibility and the wise use of the imagination) and societal control in the guise of doing what is best for “the common good.”  You also find a number of books and websites that I recommend.

Correction: Last issue I incorrectly wrote the name of the near death experience website founded by Dr. Jeffrey Long, with whom I am currently writing a book. The correct URL is www.nderf.org. I encourage you to visit it.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quotes Of The Day

“If you can tell me who your heroes are, I can tell you how you’re going to turn out in life.

-- Warren Buffett

Fast Fact

“The medicalization of depression dates to a "chemical imbalance" theory of the late 1950s, when some patients taking the anti-hypertensive drug reserpine got depressed. Reserpine was known to partially deplete catecholamines, a kind of neurotransmitter in the brain, of which serotonin is one example. This led to the theory that depression was caused by low catecholamine levels. Drugs have been successfully marketed as antidepressants by showing that they enhance catecholamine activity. While this looks like a neuroscience success story, the truth is that no case of depression has ever been shown to be caused by low catecholamine levels.” (emphasis added)

Antidepressants and the Pharmacomafia-FDA Scam by C. Norman Shealy, MD, Ph.D.

The January 17, 2008 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine has the most FDA-incriminating article I have seen in an establishment publication! “Selective Publication of Antidepressant Trials and Its Influence on Apparent Efficacy”, p. 252-260, by Erik H. Taylor, M.D., et al from the Department of Psychiatry, U. of Oregon is perhaps the most important medical paper so far this century.  Their conclusion is that the efficacy “was 32% overall”!!!! Of 71 FDA-registered studies, 31% were not published! Negative or questionable studies were not published in 22 cases and in 11 cases were published and “conveyed a positive outcome” despite negative results!   The PharmacoMafia once again appears to have the complete complicity of the FDA in its assault upon honesty, integrity, and truth.

Thirty-two percent effective!!  That is even worse than I had gleaned from the published literature.  In published papers, an efficacy of 37 to 42% is common.  Of course, if 31% of papers were not published, the average would definitely be lower!  Since we can expect placebo to be about 35% this means that, OVERALL, antidepressants SUCK.  On average they are not only less effective than placebo but they also have the added average 25% “side effects” that are published.  Hmmm.  I wonder whether the side effects---complications--- are also equally dishonestly published to be lower than those actually seen.

Indeed, the increase in violent behavior in children seen with antidepressant drugs is also seen in adults.  Parents who murder their own children are just one example of the serious complications of antidepressants, the second largest financial boondoggle of the PharmacoMafia.  The bottom line is that you cannot trust ANYTHING that the drug companies say, including papers published in major medical journals.  Kudos to NEJM and to Dr. Taylor and his colleagues.

This remarkable paper reminds me to tell you that 85% of depressed people can be safely helped with:
• The use of the Liss cranial electrical stimulator
• Relaxation with the Shealy RelaxMate II

Of course, physical exercise, spiritual counseling, and good nutrition are major adjuncts both in preventing and in treating depression.  And those who do the Ninety Days to Stress-free Living usually remain out of depression.  Far less expensive, far safer, far more efficacious.  In over 30,250 patients, 85% have been helped.  That is far superior to any drug.  Interestingly, a significant number of the patients I have treated for depression came in on antidepressant drugs but were still depressed. Virtually all the others had failed one to several antidepressants.  Of course antidepressants are only the tip of a BIG iceberg.  Drugs kill each year at least 185, 815 people, are responsible for 28% of hospitalizations and thus contribute to 8.8 million hospital admissions each year! (“Reaction." American Medical News. January 15, 1996. Page 11.) Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

I have often said you cannot afford the luxury of depression, anxiety, guilt or depression.  I now can say, more emphatically than ever, you cannot afford the stupidity of listening to the PharmacoMafia or of believing what they publish!  Thank you, Dr. Taylor for an honest article.

Statins Suck! by C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

If there really was a NEED for statin drugs, they MIGHT be worth the risks.  On the other hand, there is no need for them as there are many better and safer ways to optimize cholesterol levels.  Statins clearly increase the risks of:

Heart muscle failure---congestive heart failure

Muscle weakness

Muscle and nerve pains

Headaches

Personality changes and irritability

Memory Loss

Alzheimer’s Disease

Muscle weakness

Nerve loss--numbness and weakness---polyneuropathy

Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS)

Liver failure

Erectile Dysfunction

Nausea

Fever

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?  Even if the overall complication rate is “low” as the PharmacoMafia claims, if it hits you, it can be 100%--Death!  Yes, SOME of the complications of statins may be decreased by taking adequate dosages of Co-Q 10, but all the alternatives to statins are MUCH safer and less expensive:

  • Policosanol
  • Beta sitosterol
  • Saw Palmetto
  • Lecithin granules
  • Guggulipid
  • Green tea extract (EGCG)
  • Curcumin
  • Physical exercise
  • Stress reduction
  • L-arginine
  • L-taurine
  • Niacin, especially timed release
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine
  • Chromium (I like Tri-Chromium)
  • Co-Q 10 (not only does it help protect you against statins, it helps lower cholesterol)
  • Fiber, including many high fiber veggies
  • Garlic
  • Pycnogenol
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Exercise
  • Stress Management!

Personally, I would take ALL of these before I would even think about statins---and I have thought about statins and there is no circumstance under which I would take one.  You may have to try one at a time or go through several to find the optimal personal formula.  However, do your brain, nerves, muscles, heart, and liver a favor by exploring these safe alternatives!

Two Articles by Jon Rappoport

The Reverse Engineering Of Freedom

Reverse engineering is a term applied to a process whereby, having a product in your hands, you take it apart---go back to its origin, in a way, and see how it was built.  Then you can build it yourself.

Looking around at individual freedom these days, suppose we took that apart?  Suppose we tracked it back historically, through the so-called Age of Enlightenment, all the way to the place where most scholars claim it was born?  Ancient Athens.

We would come upon the dialogues of Socrates, stunning documents for which there appears to be no precedent anywhere in the ancient world.

These were conversations between Socrates and various citizens of the time.  The goal was to define basic concepts, such as piety, justice, and the Good.

Socrates, the master of logic, often begins by asking his companion for his notion of what the key concept means and entails.  Having heard the answer, Socrates leads the way into a trap.  If justice means XYZ, then that would bring them into a contradiction, an absurdity.  So justice must mean something else.  Socrates goes back to scratch and tries another definition of the concept---and once again, it all comes apart and arrives at some absurd situation.

Although the conversation itself is an exercise in free speech, the process of coming to a mutual understanding seems forced.  It seems inevitable.  It seems, in fact, to squash the very freedom it embodies.  It seems as if there is only one correct answer to every problem, and only Socrates knows the answer.

The key is in understanding that Socrates' star pupil, Plato, wrote these dialogues, and this is what we are reading.  Plato believed that every great philosophical concept existed, in its most truthful and cherished essence, in a world apart from ours---a world of super forms and ideas, from which all physical reality was derived.

So Plato imbued these dialogues with a search for this world apart.

Perhaps Socrates himself, historically, undertook his dialogues with students in a different way.  Perhaps he was a different kind of man.

The point?  Plato was striving to understand what he took to be an inevitable and perfect set of answers about reality.  Having found these, it would be the duty of the "enlightened" to create a political state that embodied them and imprinted them on the minds of every generation of the young.  This comes close to what I call the Formula of the Secret Society.  There is no individual freedom.

On the other hand, Socrates, who said famously, "The unexamined life is not worth living," was perhaps opting for a much more open process of discovery, in which each human being would find answers for himself.

Freedom.  And such a process would sooner or later lead a person to the deployment of his own imagination, so that what appear to be the limits of the physical world are surpassed.

And what lies beyond the physical continuum?  Just one perfect world, or an infinity of possible worlds?  If Socrates, the historical man, was glimpsing this latter notion, then his conversations were truly about freedom.  The freedom to explore, to discover, to invent, to create.

And such conversations would embody what I call the Tradition of Imagination.

The Formula of the Secret Society and the Tradition of Imagination are the two great invisible rivers of real history…

The Formula Of The Secret Society

We can see part of the Secret Society Formula in the current presidential race.  Hillary Clinton has just fastened on to a phrase: "No woman is illegal."  She is using this to promote the ultimate concept of unlimited immigration.  It's useful to understand how she and other candidates are viewing the political future of the planet.

They see Earth as one nation.  Therefore, under that flag, there couldn't be illegal immigration.  It's a slam-dunk.

Where is this all heading?  Well, the individual will be branded as a dues-paying citizen of the planet, a recipient of the "generosity" of the controlling bureaucracy.  Of course, in exchange for this, there are certain obligations.  For example, obedience to all regulations that come down from above.

On the level of consciousness, the ultimate sacrifice is surrendering the reality of the free individual altogether.  The basic crime will be being free.

So, what looks like great generosity and "planetary consciousness" turns out to be slavery.

We have to understand that these politicians are viewing the planet as one entity with one set of controlling managers.  Everything they offer stems from some version of that concept.

For a revealing thought experiment, imagine what would happen if a Hillary or an Obama or a McCain were suddenly taken from their platforms and placed in the life of "an ordinary citizen."  How would they react to living out the destiny of a cog in the world machine they are helping to create?  Would they really want to "share and care" all the way to the grave?  Would they be satisfied with that?  Or do they want to lead from a higher position, where they enjoy special benefits?

It turns out they are not making any sacrifices.  They don't intend to.  They are "being kind for everyone else."  They are working toward a numbing "equality" in which everyone else is sucking on the teat of the State.  A State controlled by an elite, to which they belong.

There is now, and there will continue to be, an enormous propaganda effort to paint the future of Earth as a "fair and balanced" society in which every person shares in the bounty.  Most politicians will compete to promise more and more of this bounty (as government entitlements) to the citizenry.

In the game of the secret society, entitlements trump freedoms, and in the end everyone will be entitled to everything as long as they are no longer what they really are.

This game will lose.  It will fail.  It is doomed.  What looks like unbeatable power from above will short circuit and collapse, because the real power resides in another place.  And I'm not talking about some castle in the clouds.  The infinite power of the individual can run and hide, but not forever.  The reckoning arrives.

Books
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
Pressfield is one of my favorite writers and author of such novels as Gates of Fire and The Legend of Bagger Vance. The War of Art is his treatise on what it truly takes to do creative work and live a fulfilling life. Of all the books I’ve read on this subject, I can truly say that this one is the best. Read it, apply what you’ll learn from it, and I can promise you your life will change for the better. Mine already has.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. I have never read a book like this one! It’s inventive on so many levels, melding film, illustration and prose together to create a remarkable tale of adventure and discovery. Guaranteed to delight you.

Slam by Nick Hornby. A wise, funny and poignant novel about teen pregnancy that I really enjoyed.

Voice of the Fire by Alan Moore. No one has done as much as Alan Moore, in my estimation, to advance the art form that is comic books and the graphic novel. He is a brilliant writer. Voice of the Fire is his first novel, a tale of vignettes told within the same locale (Northampton, England, Moore’s hometown) over a span of millennia. Read it and you will gain new insights into the power of place, including your own hometown and all the tales it has witnessed over the centuries; tales of which you too are an integral part.
