New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. I hope you missed it as much as I missed writing it. In this issue, you’ll find information about the dangers of the Gardasil vaccine that I first warned you about a few weeks ago. You can bet that Merck, the vaccine’s manufacturer, along with the FDA and state health agencies, will try to cast doubt about the tragedy that you will read about below.

Also in this issue, you’ll learn about the health benefits of wheatgrass juice and self-care tips for tendonitis. You’ll also an abundance of recommended website links.

Now let me take a moment to correct myself. Last issue, I warned about what I then believed to be an ominous move by the FDA to place all aspects of complementary and alternative medicine under their control. In actuality, the issue I wrote about was far less than I made it out to be, due to my failure to fully educate myself on the subject. For more on this, be sure to read the articles you’ll find on the first website I list in the Recommendations site below.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Gardasil Causes Paralysis

When I first wrote about the Gardasil vaccine a few issues ago (Gardasil: Big Pharma’s Latest Con, available at
http://www.1healthyworld.com/eZine/vol5no4.cfm), among the things I pointed out was that one of its many side-effects was a polio-like condition known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. What follows is a report of what is potentially the first documented case of this since the FDA approved Gardasil earlier this year. My comments appear in brackets throughout.

Family claims cervical-cancer vaccine caused paralysis
Health Department disputes that determination
by Jo Rafferty - Nevada Appeal News Service, May 17, 2007

Fourteen-year-old Jessica Vega went into the emergency room at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno on Thursday night when she couldn't move her legs and her arms felt weak.

"Her legs are paralyzed, her arms are affected. She is very weak in her arms," said Tondra Vees a family friend. "She has to use a walker. Even with that, she can't get to the bathroom. She can't stand up at all."

Vees said the girl has been determined by her doctor to have Guillain-Barre syndrome, an acute, autoimmune condition that can lead to paralysis.

The girl, whose mother Rhonda Vega is a full-time teacher's aide at Carson Valley Middle School, received her first booster shot of the cervical cancer prevention vaccine Gardasil on May 2. [Note that this means the girl’s symptoms occurred only 15 days later.]

"According to her neurologist, that's what caused this," said Vees.

Nevada State Health Officer Dr. Bradford Lee said the Web sites the Nevada State Health Department checks don't list the girl's symptoms as a side-effect.

"We are aware of a report of an alleged side-effect," said Lee. "Based on the CDC's site and the manufacturer's site, this is not a side-effect of the vaccine." [What an ignorant and wholly irresponsible comment! Merck, the manufacturer, would never admit to such a side-effect on its website, and the CDC is hardly the bastion of established truth when it comes to side-effects caused by pharmaceutical drugs. To therefore rely solely on these sites for guidance about Gardasil is ridiculous. Unfortunately, it’s also par for the course for most state health agencies.]

Vees said the girl has been determined by her doctor to have Guillain-Barre syndrome, an acute, autoimmune condition that can lead to paralysis.

Vees said the girl was being moved to a rehabilitation center on Tuesday.

"Thankfully, since Thursday, it doesn't appear to be ending up in her respiratory system, although she's getting weaker," Vees said. "They were going to let her go home, but now she's not. I think they expect her to be in (rehabilitation) for a month or so."

Vees cites a Feb. 21 report on the National Vaccine Information Center Web site, nvic.org, in which NVIC president Barbara Loe Fisher states, "There are twice as many children collapsing and four times as many children experiencing tingling, numbness and loss of sensation after getting a Gardasil vaccination compared to those getting a TDAP (tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis) vaccination. There have been reports of facial paralysis and Guillain-Barre syndrome." [My emphasis added. These reports have not previously made it into the mainstream media, to my knowledge.]

Vees cites that according to nvic.org, the vaccine's manufacturer, Merck & Co., studied Gardasil in fewer than 1,200 girls younger than age 16 in "pre-licensure trials." [In addition, none of the clinical trials were set up to determine whether long-term side effects from Gardasil may occur. You can read more about the studies and how slanted they were in Merck’s favor in my original article on this subject.]

According to Vees, the girl had not received any other vaccines at the same time, and prior to Thursday was "healthy as a horse."

Public information officer Martha Framsted and Lee, both of the Nevada State Health Department, said Monday they check for vaccine information only from government-approved Web sites. [How convenient!]

"We always try to go to the Web sites that have been scientifically proven," said Framsted. "I don't believe (the National Vaccine Information Center) is one of our federal partners." [Since when are websites “scientifically proven”?  Even accounting for Framsted’s poor grasp of the English language, she exhibits little awareness of the documented information that can be found at the NVIC website.]

The agencies the health department does check with before approving a vaccine are the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), the manufacturer's Web site (in this case gardasil.com and merckvaccines.com) and with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the only entity in the federal government which can make recommendations regarding routine administration of vaccines, according to the CDC.

The Web site gardasil.com states that the only side effects are "pain, swelling, itching and redness at the injection site, fever, nausea and dizziness."

Neither Lee nor Framsted wanted to speculate on why the doctor would say the girl's paralysis was a side-effect of the vaccine. [Among other reasons, they don’t want to open themselves and their agency up to legal action.]

According to Bonnie Dellner, the chief school nurse for the Douglas County School District, the normal cost for the three vaccinations of Gardasil is $500. The school district offers these vaccines at $15 each. [This means the state of Nevada is subsidizing the cost at taxpayer expense.]

Dellner said the school had received no complaints after an April 29 immunization clinic at Douglas High School.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil on June 8. Gardasil is for girls and women ages 9 to 26. Gardasil is the only vaccine that may help guard against diseases caused by HPV, which may cause cervical cancer. [Note the qualifications in the last sentence. There is no prove that Gardasil guards against any disease beyond a few strains of HPV, nor is there any prove that HPV causes cervical cancer or other diseases. Therefore, why risk using Gardasil? As I stated in my last article on this subject, the vaccine is little more than Merck’s way of financially recovering from the substantial losses it incurred due to Vioxx, which FDA whistle-blower Dr. David Graham estimates killed or injured over 100,000 people before Merck took it off the market. Needless to say, the FDA has not censured Merck in any way for the deaths and injury caused by Vioxx, despite the fact that it has now been found that Merck’s internal research of the drug showed that it posed a risk of heart attack and stroke and kept the information from the FDA prior to the latter’s approval of Vioxx. More proof of the cushy relationship between the FDA and Big Pharma.]

The above article can also be found here: http://tinyurl.com/yt2zmk

By the way, despite claims to the contrary by both Merck and the FDA, subsequent research into Gardasil showed that its effectiveness against HPV isn’t as great as they stated, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. You can read about that here: http://tinyurl.com/ywfnot - As you do, note the spin that is used to support Gardasil despite the findings.

The Health Benefits of Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice is an especially healthy juice that first became popular in the United States in the 1960s and 70s, largely due to the writings of the late Dr. Ann Wigmore, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute, which was later renamed the Ann Wigmore Foundation. After years of poor health, Dr.Wigmore cured herself by daily drinking wheatgrass juice. She then spent the next 35 years of her life promoting natural healing methods such as raw food diets and wheatgrass juicing, becoming one of the leading voices in the natural health food movement.

Wheatgrass juice is derived from grass grown from sprouted wheatberries. The juice produced from wheatgrass is a dark emerald green with an extremely sweet, distinct taste. Wheatgrass juice contains a variety of  potent antioxidant and anti-aging nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin E, and an abundance of minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. It is also rich in amino acids, which are necessary for your body’s manufacture of essential proteins.

But perhaps the most important nutrient supplied by wheatgrass juice is the rich supply of chlorophyll, which is often referred to as the “blood” of vegetables because of how closely the chemical makeup and molecular structure of this green pigment resembles hemoglobin, a primary component of human blood. Like hemoglobin, chlorophyll is excellent at delivering live-sustaining oxygen to all of your body’s cells and tissues. In addition, chlorophyll aids the liver and other organs in eliminating toxins, and also protects cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) from binding to the DNA of healthy cells.

Among the other benefits of wheatgrass juice is its ability to enhance the overall health and functioning of blood cells, bones, kidneys, liver, muscles, spleen, and teeth. Wheatgrass juice also has potent hypotensive properties, meaning it acts to regulate and reduce high blood pressure. Regular consumption of wheatgrass juice can also help improve circulation and metabolism. Because of wheatgrass juice’s powerful detoxification effects, it is best to initially limit your consumption wheatgrass juice to one to two ounces per day until your body becomes accustomed to it. After that, you can consume as much wheatgrass juice as you desire each day.

Wheatgrass juice is prepared by grinding the juice out of fresh wheatgrass, which is grown by sprouting wheatberries placed in a flat planting tray with high-quality soil. When the grass is about 6 inches high it is ready to harvest. The fresh grass is then ground by a wheatgrass juicer (some higher quality masticating juicers can be used for this purpose). These types of juicers are available on line and at many health food stores as both manual (crank) and electric models.

Wheatgrass juice can also be found at many health food stores, health food co-ops, and supermarkets. And number of on line websites also make it possible to have fresh-squeezed wheatgrass juice delivered daily right to your home.  The process of growing the wheat is time consuming (it takes about a week to grow the grass) and space consuming (if you want to have daily wheat grass juice, you will need window space for 5-7 large soil trays). For this reason it is often recommended that you find a local source unless you are prepared to put in the time and effort to create your own daily supply.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and RelievingTendonitis

Tendonitis is a condition in which the tendon, a fibrous chord that attaches a muscle to a bone or a muscle to another muscle, develops inflammation. There are two types of tendonitis: inflammation of the tendons themselves, and inflammation of the tendonous sheath that lines the tendons. Inflammation can occur to the tendon itself or to the lining of the tendon, although usually the inflammation occurs in both areas simultaneously.

Symptoms

Tendons are usually very painful and tender to the touch, and pain also occurs as a result of movement of the involved joint. Often the joint motion becomes restricted because of the pain and the abnormal changes to the tendons themselves that affect movement. The pain can become very severe depending on the degree of inflammation, and can radiate to the joints above and below affected joint. In addition, the inflamed tendons can have a “creaking” quality due to “friction rubs” from the inflammation itself, and may become swollen. Bone enlargement around the affected tendon can also occur.

Causes

Tendonitis can be caused by decreased circulation to the tendons due to repeated or chronic trauma. The most common cause of tendonitis is repeated or extreme trauma in the form of excessive exercise and/or strain. Certain diseases can also cause tendonitisi, such as rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disorders, gout, Reiter’s syndrome (an inflammatory syndrome), excessively high blood cholesterol levels, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Self-Care Tips

Treatment of tendonitis needs to include immobilization of the affected area, compresses with cold or heat, oral and topical pain relievers, and therapeutic exercise, which should increase as joint becomes better and is able to tolerate increased movement.

Diet: Avoidance of the members of the nightshade family of plants (white potato, tomato, eggplant, all peppers except black, and tobacco); if restricted for a long time, over years, this may be effective. Assessment and treatment of food allergies is imperative, as inflammation may be aggravated by food allergies in many people.

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy Cream® applied topically over the affected areas can soothe pain and speed healing.

Herbs: Combine equal parts of the tinctures of willow bark, cramp bark, and prickly ash and take one teaspoon of this mixture three times a day.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include Aconite, Thuja, Ruta grav., Belladonna, and Apis mel.

Hydrotherapy: Apply alternating hot and cold packs to the affected area one to three times daily Epsom salt baths can also be helpful.

Nutritional Supplementation: Useful nutrients for tendonitis include vitamin B complex, vitamin B6, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamin E, bromelain, essential fatty acids, cod liver oil, calcium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and  D-phenylalanine.

Topical Treatment: Massage the affected areas with a mixture of salt and vinegar, then wrap with several layers of gauze or muslin soaked with this mixture.

Professional Care

If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treatingtendonitis: Acupressure, Acupuncture, Bodywork, Biofeedback Training, Chiropractic, Craniosacral Therapy, Detoxification Therapy, Energy Medicine, Magnet Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, Osteopathy, Oxygen Therapy, Prolotherapy, and Yoga.

Global Warming

How bad has the global warming hysteria gotten? Well, one group with the self-important moniker of the Optimum Population Trust has now come out to say that children are bad for the planet (read about it here:
http://tinyurl.com/2dc7bf), while a so-called environmentalist accuses mankind of being “a virus” and calls for reducing the human population to under one billion people (that means wiping out 5 billion more and you can read about it here: http://tinyurl.com/36eqlm).

Fortunately, sanity is still part of the debate, as evidenced by this illuminating article about Reid A. Bryson, an acclaimed environmental scientist who calls global warming fears “absurd.” You can read about it here: http://www.wecnmagazine.com/2007issues/may/may07.html
