New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week I’m continuing to excerpt from my latest book, Juice Alive: The Ultimate Guide to Juicing Remedies. Below, you can read why juicing is so effective in creating greater levels of energy.

Also in this issue is an article I wrote that debunks the current push underway by Merck and government officials to make Merck’s highly suspect Gardasil vaccine mandatory for all non-pregnant girls and women between the ages of 11 and 26. As you will read, this is nothing short of a money grab by Merck, and one that poses the risk of serious side-effects for those who receive the vaccine.

Finally, you’ll also find self-care tips for dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as an article I found very interesting that was submitted to me by one of my readers, my latest recommended websites, which I hope you will also view, given their relevance to your health.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Juicing: Liquid Energy by Steven Bailey, ND, and Larry Trivieri Jr.

During the juicing process the cell wall of fruits and vegetables is cut open, releasing an abundance of nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and chlorophyll, all of which are quickly absorbed by the body once the resultant fresh juice is consumed. It is precisely because fresh juices contain such an abundance of nutrients that juicing can create such an energizing effect in the body. To fully understand how this is possible, let’s briefly explore the functions each of the class of nutrients contain.

Amino Acids—Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which make up over half of your body’s dry (non-water) weight. Without an adequate supply of amino acids, many functions in your body cannot be performed or occur at sub-optimal levels. When your body’s supply of amino acids is deficient, a host of health problems can result.

Amino acids play essential roles in literally thousands of functions that are carried out by your body each and every day, including cellular regeneration and the manufacture of new cells. Amino acids are also needed for the proper build up and repair of your body’s muscles, blood, and organs, as well as for the manufacture of hormones. They are also required for healthy digestion, proper immune function, healthy mental function (including memory and mental alertness), proper liver function, proper circulation, restful sleep, and abundant physical and mental energy. Deficiencies in just one amino acid, if left unchecked, can result in a wide range of health problems, ranging from accelerated aging, allergies, and gastrointestinal disorders to sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, impaired brain function, and an impaired ability of your body to repair and regenerate itself.

By drinking fresh-squeezed juices on a daily basis, you can provide your body with the amino acids it requires in forms that are easily digested and assimilated. The amino acid content found in fresh juices varies, however. For the most plentiful supply, use juices made from dark, leafy green vegetables and sprouts.

Vitamins—Vitamins play many vital roles in your body. Like minerals and the essential amino acids, many vitamins cannot be manufactured by the body and therefore must be supplied via our diet. Vitamins are especially important for the proper performance and regulation of your body’s numerous biochemical and metabolic processes and reactions. When vitamins in the body become deficient—a very common condition among people who eat the standard American diet—all of these various biological functions can be impaired. The end result is poor health and, often, the onset of a variety of disease conditions that are specifically related to vitamin deficiencies.

There are two classes of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins get their name because they are capable of being stored in body tissues, where they can be drawn upon when they are not being obtained through the diet. The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E, and K. Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, as are yellow and dark, leafy green vegetables. Dark leafy green vegetables are also excellent sources of vitamins E and K. When juiced, all of these vegetables quickly provide your body with a rich supply of these vitamins.

Another subclass of fat-soluble vitamins is known as carotenoids. There are over 500 natural substances that are included in this category, all of which naturally occur in fruits and vegetables. More than 50 carotenoids act as precursors for vitamin A. This means that when such carotenoids, which include beta-carotene, are consumed, they provide the body with the raw materials it needs to convert them into vitamin A. Among the best food sources of carotenoids are yellow and dark green vegetables, orange fruits from the citrus family, cherries, and watermelons. Juicing these fruits and vegetables provides an abundant source of easily assimilated carotenoids, as well as many other vitamins and other vital nutrients.

Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored by the body and so must be obtained on a daily basis from the foods you eat. Water-soluble vitamins include all B-vitamins and vitamin C. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is contained in all plant foods, and is particularly concentrated in seaweed. Green leafy vegetables are a good source of vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and B9 (folic acid or folate), while vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is found in bananas, cabbage, and cauliflower. Vitamin C is found in a wide range of fruits and vegetables, including all citrus fruits, cantaloupe, cherries, papaya, strawberries, red and green peppers, parsley, and dark, leafy green vegetables. Another  subclass of water-soluble vitamins is known as bioflavonoids. Collectively, bioflavonoids are sometimes referred to as vitamin P because of their ability to increase permeability of the capillary walls, making it easier for other nutrients, as well as oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass in and out of the capillaries. Bioflavonoids also increase your body’s ability to absorb and make use of vitamin C. The best plant food sources of bioflavonoids are the same foods listed above that are rich in vitamin C. As with fat-soluble vitamins, juicing is an excellent way to ensure that your body obtains a rich supply of most water-soluble vitamins.

Minerals--
Minerals are another class of nutrients that are essential for good health. Mineral stores in your body’s tissues and fluids comprise nearly five percent of your body’s total weight. Acting in concert with vitamins, enzymes, and various other substances in your body, including hormones, minerals play an integral role in the literally thousands of functions and processes that occur within your body each day. These include blood formation, energy production, enzyme function, proper metabolism, proper muscle function, nerve transmission, the proper growth and maintenance of your bones and teeth, regulation of body fluids, and the maintenance of acid-alkaline balance. Moreover, without an adequate supply of minerals, vitamins and other nutrients are unable to properly perform their own functions in the body.

In addition, minerals are important for proper cell function, and are required for healthy cellular regeneration as old cells die out and are replaced by new cells, a process that occurs in your body each and every day. Without an adequate supply of minerals, both existing cells and the cells that replace them can become unhealthy and lose their ability to carry out the many tasks for which nature designed them. When this happens, the stage is set for the onset of chronic and degenerative diseases to take hold within your body.

Because minerals are inorganic, they cannot be produced or synthesized by your body. Therefore, it is vitally important that you receive an adequate supply of minerals each day from the foods you consume. Unfortunately, research shows that the vast majority of the population in the United States suffers from some level of mineral deficiencies. For example, research conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) indicates that, today, the majority of people in both the United States and other Western nations do not even meet 75 percent of the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for many essential minerals.

In light of the problems of mineral deficiencies faced by so many people, the daily consumption of fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices is all the more important, since trying to eat enough fruits and vegetables each day in order to provide your body with an adequate mineral supply is no longer feasible for most people, due to the diminished mineral content in plant foods. This is so even for fruits and vegetables that are grown organically (although organic fruits and vegetables by and large have significant higher amounts of minerals and other nutrients than nonorganic fruits and vegetables). Juicing provides a solution to this challenge because, by juicing, you can easily and conveniently consume a much greater volume of fruits and vegetables than you can by eating them in solid form. As we stated in Chapter One, a single quart of vegetable juice, which can easily be consumed by one person in a single day, supplies the nutrition equivalent to approximately five pounds of solid produce. Juicing, therefore, is one of the best ways you have of ensuring that your body is supplied with all of the minerals it needs each day.

Enzymes—Enzymes are a special class of biochemicals that act as catalysts in the body, triggering the many functions it performs, including the maintenance and regeneration of your body’s fluids, cells, tissues, and organs. Scientists have identified approximately 1,000 enzymes, which are a part of all living things, including all plant foods in their raw, uncooked state. In fact, enzymes within fruits and vegetables are essential for them to grow and ripen, including, in some cases, changing color as they do so, such as green tomatoes turning red. Without enzymes, none of your body’s other biochemicals would be able to carry out their intended functions, nor would the other nutrients you receive from the foods you consume be able to operate within you.

One of the most important roles that certain enzymes play in the body is the proper digestion of food, followed by the assimilation of the nutrients that food contains. The human body manufactures over 20 digestive enzymes in order to properly digest and assimilate proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. Ideally, however, you are also supplying your body with enough enzymes each day by consuming a sufficient amount of raw or slightly cooked fruits and vegetables. (Plant foods that are over-cooked have their enzyme content destroyed by heat.) By doing so, you enable your body to conserve its own enzyme supply, making them more available for other biological functions. Increasingly, however, most people fail to consume enough raw or slightly cooked vegetables each day, making it necessary for the body to rely on its own enzyme supply, in some cases to the point of depletion. Additionally, when foods are cooked, much, if not all, of their enzyme content is destroyed.

Juicing provides a healthy alternative method for ensuring that you receive the enzymes your body needs for proper digestion and assimilation. In addition, regularly drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices can aid your body in preventing and recovering from a wide variety of other health problems that are caused or exacerbated by a lack of enzymes.

Chlorophyll—By regularly drinking juices made from fresh-squeezed green vegetables, you will be supplying your body with an abundant supply of chlorophyll, a green pigment contained in various plant foods, especially those that are predominantly green in color. Chlorophyll has been called the “blood” of vegetables because its chemical makeup and molecular structure so closely resembles hemoglobin, a prime component of human blood. Hemoglobin is rich in iron, as well as oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen, and plays an important role in delivering oxygen to your body’s cells and tissues. Chlorophyll is composed of all of these same elements, except that it contains magnesium instead of iron. While most people have enough iron in their bodies, growing research indicates that nearly all of us are deficient in magnesium stores, making chlorophyll-rich vegetables a wide food choice.

The more chlorophyll-rich vegetables that you consume each day, the more you will enhance your body’s ability to transport oxygen to all of your cells and tissues due to its hemoglobin-like properties. In addition, chlorophyll also helps your body’s organs, especially the liver to eliminate toxins by enhancing the processes of cellular and organ detoxification, and also enhances your body’s production of red blood cells. Chlorophyll also has anti-cancer properties due to its ability to prevent carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) from binding to DNA in your body’s cells. It also helps to protect against the buildup of calcium stones in the kidneys, as well as aiding in their breakdown and elimination. Finally, chlorophyll-rich vegetables help your body to maintain proper acid-alkaline balance, a factor that is of increasing importance in today’s world, where over-acidity is so common in our bodies’ internal environment.

Juicing is perhaps the easiest way to ensure that you are receiving a bountiful supply of chlorophyll. Juicing dark, leafy green vegetables, such as chard, collard greens, romaine lettuce, kale, parsley, and wheat grass juice are especially good choices for this purpose. Other chlorophyll-rich vegetables you can juice include cabbage, celery, cucumbers, green peppers, spinach, turnip greens, and watercress, all of which can be combined with other vegetables to make delicious, energizing drinks.

Self-Care Tips for Dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of a nerve in the median of the wrist that produces numbness, tingling, and sometimes pain. Weakness and tingling in the first three fingers, thumb, and the palm surface of the hands can also occur. Pain, burning, and/or tingling sensations can also manifest along the entire arm, neck, hips, and thigh. Carpal tunnel can occur in one of both wrists, and in some cases gripping strength and the ability to pick up and hold objects can be significantly impaired. The condition is most common in women 35 and older.

What To Consider

Conditions that can create swelling or fluid shifts that contribute to pressure on the wrist nerve, such as pregnancy; low thyroid functions; occupations that require forceful or repetitive wrist movements; vitamin B6 deficiencies (monoamine oxidase inhibitor anti-depressant drugs can create a deficiency in vitamin B6 and should be avoided if possible); nerve disorders; compression of the nerve root of the sixth cervical vertebra due to misalignment of the neck; muscular spasm; osteoarthritis; disk disease; or tumor can all cause or contribute to the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, and therefore must be ruled out or properly addressed before lasting improvement can be achieved.. Carpal tunnel syndrome may also be secondary to other wrist conditions, such as sprains.

The appropriate treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome varies, depending on its cause(s). Following treatment, symptoms may improve in one week or take several months. Often carpal tunnel can be successfully treated without surgery, although sometimes surgery is necessary.

Carpal tunnel is often a misdiagnosis of thoracic outlet compression syndrome, in which pressure to the lower cervical and upper thoracic nerves results in dysfunction of the tissues and nerves associated with the brachial nerves. If this is the case, then treatment should focus on resolving the thoracic outlet compression first.

Many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can also be traced to interference fields in the arm, shoulders, or neck, and are often caused by vaccination scars.

Self-Care

Diet:
Eat a whole foods diet and limit your protein intake. Also eliminate foods containing yellow dyes, and avoid stressor foods that deplete the body’s level of B6 such as excessive consumption of sugars, caffeine, and processed grains and corn. Good foods to focus on are whole grains, seeds, and nuts, soybeans, fresh salmon, brewer’s yeast, molasses, liver, wheat bran and germ, and cod.

Nutritional Supplementation: People with carpal tunnel syndrome often have a large deficiency of vitamin B6, or have lifestyle factors that inhibit B6 metabolism such as stress, or ingesting Yellow Dye No. 5 and tartrazine derivatives. A deficiency of vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, can also cause a pyridoxine-responsive neuropathy (nerve disorder). Treatment with B6 may relieve the symptoms in many cases, eliminating the need for surgery. Daily dosage ranges from 25-300 mg, depending on the person’s biochemistry. Caution: Pyridoxine supplementation may create a nerve disorder (sensory neuropathy) in dosages as low as 300 mg, if taken daily for long periods. However, most of the cases of vitamin B6 toxicity have been reported with dosages from 2-5 grams per day.

In addition to vitamin B6, other useful nutrients to relief the pain and help speed healing include vitamin B complex, magnesium, essential fatty acids, folic acid, bromelain, coenzyme Q10, kelp, manganese, protease enzyme formula, pycnogenol, and zinc.  • Thyroid hormone can also be helpful in cases of carpal tunnel related to low thyroid function.

Aromatherapy: Marjoram, lavender, or eucalyptus essential oils rubbed directly into the tender areas can help relieve symptoms.

Flower Essences: Rescue RemedyÒ
to help alleviate stress.

Herbs: Anti-inflammatory herbs effectively support the broader treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. A simple approach involves combining equal parts of meadowsweet and willow bark tinctures and taking one teaspoonful of this mixture three times a day. Other useful herbs include aloe vera, butcher’s broom, corn silk, devil’s claw, cayenne (capsicum), ginkgo, gravel root, marshmallow, skullcap, turmeric (curcumin), wintergreen oil, yarrow, and yucca.

Homeopathy: Aconite, Arsen alb., Ignatia, Nat mur., Chamomilla, and Colchicum are useful homeopathic remedies. Note, however, that homeopathic treatment tends to be constitutional in nature and is therefore normally long-term, but usually successful.

Hydrotherapy: Contrast application (hot and cold water packs applied one to three times daily).

Lifestyle: Avoid repetitive wrist movement.

Professional Care

If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating and relieving the symptoms ofcarpal tunnel syndrome: Acupressure, acupuncture, Applied Kinesiology, Biofeedback Training, Bodywork (especially Feldenkrais, Hellerwork), Chiropractic, Craniosacral Therapy, Energy Medicine, Guided Imagery, Light Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, Orthomolecular Medicine, Osteopathy, Prolotherapy, Rolfing, and Qigong.

Gardasil: Big Pharma’s Latest Con

As long-time readers of The Health Plus Letter most likely realize, when it comes to what is reported in the mainstream media, I am by and large a skeptic and a contrarian. There is a very simple reason for this: Many times what we are told by our leaders and media is patently false. Sadly, this is precisely the case with the current hype surrounding the new Gardasil vaccine, said by its manufacturer, Merck, to prevent cervical cancer. (Merck is the same company that brought us Vioxx, which killed or seriously injured tens of thousands of people due to its increase risk of causing heart attack and stroke—a risk that Merck knew existed prior to submitting Vioxx for FDA approval. After raking in billions in profits year after year, Merck finally voluntarily withdrew Vioxx after the damage was done – all without any penalties being levied by the FDA, of course.)

Merck claims that the Gardasil vaccine will protect up to 95 percent of young women from developing cervical cancer, which has been linked to certain strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). Taking Merck at its word, government officials in various states, including the governors of Texas, Virginia, and New Mexico, now want to pass legislation that would make Gardasil mandatory for sixth grade girls under their jurisdiction. Other state politicians are currently considering similar measures, which, if adopted, would be signed into law. If these measures come to pass, they will prove highly profitable for Merck, since Gardasil is the most expensive vaccine ever developed, at a cost of $380 for three shots administered over a period of six months. Additionally, booster vaccine shots need to be administered every five years. Not a bad money train. (Of course, if the states do succeed in mandating the vaccine, the cost will be hidden, since the states themselves will doubtless pay for it. Meaning it will be paid for by citizen taxes.) Naturally Merck and state officials are pushing this measure in order to save lives.

But let’s look at the facts.

First of all, while I by no means wish to discount cervical cancer, it is hardly common among the female population. In fact, as far as cancers go, it’s rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), last year in the US there were less than 10,000 cases of cervical cancer, resulting in approximately 3,700 deaths. Since cervical cancer affects such a small percentage of American women, where is the justification for potentially vaccinating all young women (many of them actually girls), given the side effects that vaccines can cause?

Secondly, according to the US National Cancer Institute (NCI), there is no actual proof that HPV directly causes cervical cancer. Does it therefore make sense to mandate a vaccine for a risk factor that may in fact not be one?

Thirdly, even if it were proven that HPV causes cervical cancer, approximately 100 strains of the virus exist. Yet Gardasil only protects (allegedly) against four strains of HPV that are possibly involved in cervical cancer. Even if these four strains of HPV do, in fact, cause cervical cancer, at best, they only account for 70 percent of cervical cancer cases. As Alan Cantwell, MD, points out, this means “
nearly one out of three cancers will not be prevented.” Meaning approximately one-third of girls and women who receive the vaccine will have done so without receiving any health benefit while possibly exposing themselves to unhealthy side effects caused by Gardasil itself. Again, is this risk worth it?

Moreover, HPV is an extremely common infection that is estimated to affect 80 percent of all men and women in the US. Yet Gardasil does not treat HPV infection, nor does it work as a protection against cervical cancer when administered to women already infected with the virus. Given the widespread occurrence of HPV, this means that in the majority of cases, Gardasil will offer no health benefits whatsoever.

On top of all of this, Gardasil does not take the place of the PAP test, which is both inexpensive (costing $50 on average) and highly effective at detecting cervical cancer, which can usually be successfully treated if caught in time.

All of the above should be enough to slow the rush to push Gardasil on America’s women and girls. And it would be, if common sense prevailed. Unfortunately, when it comes to Big Pharma, that usually is not the case. Moreover, in the case of Texas governor Rick Perry, Big Pharma’s influence is clearly detectable. Perry has already signed an executive order making Gardasil mandatory for all sixth grade girls in Texas (the first government official to do so – fortunately, the State’s House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that overturns that order, with the Texas Senate possibly posed to follow suit). Prior to doing his so, Perry’s chief of staff was a man named Mike Toomey. Guess what Mr. Toomey does today? Nothing much. He’s simply Merck’s primary lobbyist for the state of Texas. What a happy coincidence! Merck has also donated to Perry’s gubernatorial campaign. But don’t worry. Both Perry and Merck insist there is no conflict of interest and that they are simply looking out for the welfare of all Texan girls. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

As it turns out, until recently, Merck lobbyists in at least a dozen states were actively pushing state officials to follow Governor Perry’s lead and take similar measures. Merck has subsequently ceased these lobbying efforts, but not before the lobbyists made major headway in accomplishing their goals. Now, it seems, officials in each of these states are happy to advance the Gardasil cause all by themselves. If they succeed, analysts predict that Gardasil will quickly earn Merck $2 billion is sales, money that is badly needed given the loss of revenues incurred by the company since the Vioxx scandal (not to mention a significant drop in the price of Merck stock).

This obvious money grab by Merck would be bad enough were it just for the reasons I’ve mentioned above. But it gets worse, because there is no proof that Gardasil is safe. In fact, according to Dr. Cantwell, a number of cases of Guillan-Barre syndrome (a serious, polio-like disease) have already occurred in female test subjects who received Gardasil. Additionally, according to the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), during Gardasil trial tests conducted by Merck “the vaccine triggered adverse event reports in 90 percent of the test subjects within 15 days.” (Emphasis added.) Compounding this finding is the fact that Merck, with the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), used a placebo containing an aluminum adjuvant for the control test groups. This particular adjuvant is known to cause adverse reactions, meaning that the adverse reactions reported by the control group made it seem as if adverse reactions caused by Gardasil were less than they actually were. In other words, the tests ensured that Gardasil appeared safer than it is. This despite the fact that both participants in the control and Gardasil groups also experienced numerous side effects, including dizziness, headache, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. And in the Gardasil group, more serious side effects were also experienced, including appendicitis, asthma, arthritis, bronchospasms, gastroenteritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

As if that isn’t bad enough, Gardasil itself contains aluminum, a known toxin that can cross the blood-brain barrier, causing brain dysfunctions, as well as triggering unhealthy inflammation, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain in the joints and muscles. Even so, the FDA still approved it. (How do supplement companies get in on this action? Oh, that’s right. They can’t, because the FDA is serious in its duty to protect us against vitamins, etc! Still want to buy my bridge?)

Adding to the problem of safety is the fact that no one knows what the long-term consequences of Gardasil might be, since no long-term follow-up was performed prior to its approval by the FDA.  This is especially concerning to me, since it often takes years before the full range of side effects caused by vaccines and other medications become apparent.

In light of all of the above, opposition to mandatory Gardasil vaccinations will hopefully grow. (Such opposition is already underway.) If not, one day Gardasil vaccination may be a requirement for young girls to attend school. And Merck will be laughing all the way to the bank.
