New This Issue

Well, I’ve finally resurfaced after buying, renovating and moving into my new home. To those of you who emailed wondering where I was, my apologies for the disappearing act, though it was unavoidable.

In this issue, I’m revisiting an interview I did with my friend Dr. Valerie Hunt, a true pioneer in the field of energy medicine and the human energy field. The more that I explore health and healing, the more convinced I am that Valerie’s insights hold the key for creating a far more elegant and effective healing paradigm than the biochemical model that is so dominant today.

I’m also sharing an easy and simple way to earn some extra income on a regular basis that I am also taking advantage of.  If it interests you, check it out. And, just in time for winter and the cold and flu season, you’ll also find self-care tips for effectively dealing with colds and flu.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

“All truth goes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. Then it is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as self-evident.”
—    Schopenhauer

Fast Fact

Americans 65 years or older ingest an average of 15 or more medications per day (prescription and over-the-counter combined). Typically, only 1 or 2 of these drugs are actually prescribed for their original health problem; the others are used to minimize negative side effects caused by the initial drugs and the interactions of all the other drugs they are using.

The Human Energy Field – An Interview With Valerie Hunt, Ph.D.

(Dr. Valerie Hunt is one of the most brilliant healers and researchers I have ever met. Now 91 years young, Valerie is professor emeritus at UCLA, where she was the first scientist to satisfactorily prove the existence of the human energy field, more commonly referred to as the “human aura.” Since that time, Valerie has remained in the forefront in the field of energy medicine, and today her ongoing research is making clear how and why understanding of the human energy field is of paramount importance not only to optimal health, but also to spiritual awareness.

What follows is part one of an interview I conducted with Valerie that was featured in my book, Health on the Edge: Visionary Views of Healing in the New Millennium. To learn more about Valerie, visit

Q: Your research shows that disturbances in the body's bioelectromagnetic field, rather than biochemical imbalances, are the primary cause of disease and malfunction. That being the case, how did biochemistry come to be the underlying basis for the diagnosis and treatment methods of orthodox or conventional medicine?

A: We got into this state back in the 18th century, when medicine started to become more serious about finding scientific evidence to support medical theory and practice. At that time, the field of chemistry was the most scientifically advanced, well before the study of electromagnetism occurred. The researchers of that era began to investigate biochemical changes, and when they did their experiments, they could see biochemical differences. That's where it started. In addition, there was already a body of established scientific evidence regarding the mechanics of alignment and things of this nature in the scientific literature, dating much earlier than the 18th century. Having these two basic references and scientific information to go on, they grabbed it, and that was the basis of the biochemical paradigm.

It wasn't until the discovery of the atom early in the 19th century, that we started really understanding electromagnetism, but by this time the biochemical paradigm was already locked in. The first research into electromagnetism was also concerned only with material substance; it had to do with atoms and the physical things of the earth. The study of bioelectromagnetism, the subtle, invisible energy fields which enfold and animate physical matter, is much more recent than that, such as the work done by Nikola Tesla during the 20th century.

So this is a brief history of why energy field medicine, alternative medicine, or whatever you wish to call it, has been late in coming. The chemistry is there and we need to be concerned about it, but it is not our primary concern and it certainly is not the cause of illness. It's a downstream cause. Even the biochemists say that all chemical reactions have to have a catalyst in order to occur. You can't just put two substances together, you have to have a catalyst, and the catalyst is electromagnetic energy. When the pattern of the electromagnetism is disturbed in the body, you will get disease and malfunction. And this electromagnetic pattern can be disturbed in a number of ways: genetically, due to the nature of the tissue, although I don't think that's a major factor; experientially, due to lifestyle patterns; or emotionally, which I think is the primary factor. What happens is there is a disturbance that occurs in the electromagnetism of the tissue, which will eventually alter the chemistry. And actually this goes clear to the DNA. I predict we will learn before long that the DNA is reprogrammed by the emotional organization of the energy field. I am not saying this simply. I have had experiences here.

Q: What you are saying, then, is that the primary cause of all disease occurs first and foremost in the field. Correct?

A: Absolutely. Many people are coming to that conclusion theoretically. I'm coming to it through my research.

Q: Conversely, then, for healing to truly occur, it has to occur in the field, as well.

A: All healing that takes place in alternative medicine is electromagnetic. Whether it's the laying on of hands, Tai Chi, meditation -- everything that takes place, Even the thought process, or the person's intent or spiritual state, changes the electromagnetic field and changes it almost instantaneously. Now if it stays changed and improved, the body heals itself, and the chemistry reorganizes. This biochemical reorganization is the effect that medicine is working upon. Medicine has never, ever cured anything. The body cures itself. Sometimes, in emergency situations, we need the offset of biochemistry, but not as a cure of disease. It never has cured disease, and it never will cure disease. Only if the field changes will there be a true cure.

For example, I can measure the energy field of a person who has had cancer but that cancer, according to chemistry, is in remission. I can tell you if the person still has a cancerous field, and until that cancerous field goes, I don't care if there is remission or not, biochemically, as long as the field does not change, it's going to recur.

And the reason they have cancer is because the field is a very high, very weak field. They're sweet, dear, lovable people. That's their emotional orientation. They aren't aggressive, and they don't have lower frequencies which have to do with tissue vitality. Without the tissue vitality, the cell becomes cancerous. But the difficulty is that some of these people would almost rather die than to give in to the very intense, angry, and hostile emotions which they have.

Q: Would you say that those emotions are basically suppressed?

A: Yes, they are suppressed as their consciousness soars, staying in what they perceive to be the more positive emotions. I have measured the fields of people with cancer many, many times, and it's always the same pattern. I've never, ever seen a cancer person whose field had the full spectrum of electromagnetic energy, from its lowest to its highest. Never, ever.

Q: Are you saying that cancer is a passive/aggressive disease in the sense of the person s emotional make-up?

A: I wouldn't say passive/aggressive. I would say it's passive, not aggressive.

Q: How did your research shift into this area of the field?

A: My academic background is as a neurophysiologist, and I was also a registered physical therapist. I was working in electromyography and electrocardiography, and I was interested in the patterns of electromyographic energy in the body that were related to emotions. Eventually, I established a pattern of emotions connected with neurological energy. In the process, I was the first researcher to have a telemetry, electromyography instrument. This was when the first astronauts went into space. They had to have monitors of their basic health -- the heart rate, the blood pressure, and the galvanic skin response -- sent from space. They did this using telemetry, which is a radio frequency instrument system. It would send a signal on an FM frequency down to the earth, where NASA would record the FM frequencies and know what was happening to the astronauts.

When I heard about this, I got in touch with NASA and the young scientist who had first made that telemetry instrumentation, and I had him build for me the first telemetry electromyography instrument. This meant I could test a person using an FM frequency, a radio frequency, process the data through my instrumentation and record it. And when I did this I found the electromagnetic energy field.

This was in early 60's, and I thought, "Oh my God, what have I got here?" So I brought in researchers from the university's chemistry, physics, and engineering departments. I said, "What have I got, an artifact?" And they kept saying I didn't, that my equipment was working fine. They tested everything, and finally I realized I was dealing with a new kind of energy in the body.

Now, forty years ago, I didn't know much about meditating, or Far Eastern literature, or mystical ideas. I just knew I was onto something. So I brought in Rosalyn Bruyere, a very top aura reader, and had her read the energy radiating from the body at the same time I recorded energy from surface electrodes. I also brought in healers and people with polio, or who were paralyzed. I just ran the gamut, because at first I didn't know what I was doing. But pretty soon I seemed to know exactly what I was doing. I was measuring an energy field that was in the form of light that radiated from the human body. It could be seen by aura readers and could be altered and changed by psychic healers, by hands-on healers, by all kinds of energy techniques. And it was extremely dynamic. It changed, and would frequently go back to where it was. Eventually, I found that I could measure the resting energy signature of a person. With some people I could get the signature in about fifteen minutes, which meant that, no matter what I did with them, they always had this dominant signature. But for others, it would take five or more recordings until I could find their signature - they were so dynamic and so changeable. This, of course, was good. Such people are not stuck with just one way to play the game. They can play it in all kinds of ways. Under new situations, emotional or physical, they can adjust the electromagnetic field so that they can cope, they can handle, and they can desirably work in the electromagnetic milieu of the world.

Q: In other words, their adaptive skills are optimal.

A: That's right. They are absolutely optimal, in all areas. I call these kinds of fields ideal. Now, what is an ideal field? Health first and foremost is health of the electromagnetic field. You're not going to have health if you don't have health in the electromagnetic field because this is the source. Biochemistry never gives you source. It is legion that some people who go to their doctor find that everything, biochemically, checks out fine. Then they may walk out of the office and die of a heart attack because their fields are not dynamic, and optimally adaptive. The models that we have which say healthy heart rates, blood pressure rates, etc., should conform to a certain standard measurement are stupid. A healthy blood pressure is one that can shoot to the top, and drop to the bottom, and stay somewhere in the middle. It is more often that the people who can't do that are the ones that die suddenly, not necessarily the ones who have what they call high blood pressure.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Treating Colds & Flu

As with all other disease conditions, prevention is the best way to deal with colds and flu. In this case, prevention means improving the health of your immune system so that it can swiftly respond to attacking cold and flu viruses and eliminate them before you develop any symptoms. The following recommendations can help you do so:

Eat a healthy diet that is free of sugar and artificial sweeteners, simple carbohydrates, and processed foods. Drink plenty of pure, filtered water throughout the day, and emphasize fresh, organic vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables. During flu season, also regular consume fresh vegetable soups and drink fresh-squeezed vegetable juices.

Take a daily high potency multivitamin/multimineral supplement.

Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially when you come in contact with people suffering from colds and flu. Also avoid rubbing your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Get adequate sleep each night.

Learn how to manage stress, and take time out for yourself each day to engage in activities you enjoy, as well as spending time with your loved ones.

Engage in regular exercise. One of the easiest and most effective exercises for all age groups is a daily 45-minute walk, which can dramatically boost NK cells and help keep your body’s lymphatic system free of toxic waste buildup. Yoga, particular the “cobra pose,” is also useful for keeping your respiratory tract healthy. To perform the cobra pose, lie on your stomach and raise your upper body backwards off the ground, bending at the waist as you inhale deeply. Hold this position for five seconds as you continue breathing. Then, as you exhale, return to your starting position. Repeat five to ten times. This exercise helps to expand your chest and lungs and can free up trapped mucus and phlegm.

Should you develop congestion in your sinuses or chest, massage your chest with menthol-based lotion or ointment (avoid products that contain petroleum) before you go to sleep. This will help clear your air pathways and increase the supply of blood to your thalamus, one of the organs that control your immune system.

Throughout the day, tap your chest over your thymus gland, located in the center of your chest approximately one inch below your collarbone. This will help to stimulate your thymus gland, which in turn will help to boost your immune function.

Self-Care Treatments

The key to treating colds and flu is to increase your body’s immune function activity. The following natural therapies can help you accomplish this goal safely and effectively.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture helps to restore your body’s supply of ATP (adenosine triphosphate, which is produced in all cells and responsible for energy) and cortisol, a hormone necessary for properly adapting to stress. Both of these results help to improve immune function. Acupuncture can also help to balance and improve digestion, endocrine gland function, and the health of the lungs, and other organs, all of which also helps your body fight off and resist cold and flu infections. In addition, acupuncture treatments  can help prevent colds and flu from ever occurring.

Aromatherapy: Add any of the following essential oils to a pot of hot water: camphor, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, peppermint, pine, rosemary, or tea tree oil. Covering your head with a towel and bend over the pot, inhaling deeply.

Ayurveda: Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine treat colds and flu by helping the body to eliminate indigestible toxins, which attract viruses and impair immune function. Among the ways that this is accomplished is through the use of herbs such as ginger, cayenne, black pepper, long pepper, and holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), all of which stimulate digestion. Patients are also advised to drink plenty of warm water throughout the day, as well as ginger tea, in order to break up mucus and phlegm. Ginger tea can easily be prepared by adding a few slices of fresh, raw ginger root to boiling water, and letting the mixture steep for 20 to 30 minutes before drinking. In cases of colds of flu accompanied by a dry cough, adding pieces of licorice root to the mixture is advised.

Another common Ayruvedic practice for treating and preventing colds and flu is the cleansing of nasal passages. This is done by filling a teapot with a quart of warm water and one teaspoon of sea salt, and then slowing pouring the water into one nostril and out the other. Doing this to both nostrils once or twice a day keeps the nostril linings moist and free of germs, and helps to open up the air pathways.

Diet: To improve your ability to resist colds and flu, emphasize fresh, organic vegetables, such as carrots, leafy greens, onions, and orange squash, that are eaten raw or lightly steamed. You can also make fresh vegetable juices and soups, which will help your body remain in a slightly alkaline state, free of over-acidity. Also be sure to drink plenty of water during the day, and avoid mucus-forming foods such as milk and dairy products, wheat, and most grains (millet and brown rice are acceptable exceptions). Also eliminate all processed foods and commercial poultry and meats, choosing organic whole foods and free-range chicken, turkey, and beef.

Herbs: Herbs have long been used by most world cultures to treat and prevent colds and flu, due to their ability to stimulate immune function, as well as their antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-catarrhal properties. Herbs that can increase immune function include astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, licorice, and St. John’s wort. Goldenseal is also excellent for helping to reverse inflammation of the mucus membranes.

Another important herb that can protect against colds and flu is lomatium, which acts as an antiviral agent and an immune stimulant. It is particularly helpful for treating cases of the flu, often bringing about complete recovery in 24 to 48 hours. Some herbalists recommend mixing lomatium with echinacea for even better results.

Other useful herbs are boneset, which stimulates the immune system, encouraging white blood cells to destroy viruses and bacteria; elder flower, which acts as an immune stimulant, anti-inflammatory, and anticatarrhal agent; elecampane, which helps to soothe irritating coughs and bronchial infections; eyebright, which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and helps heal irritations in the nasal pharynx and the sinuses; and yarrow, which is particularly useful for colds and flu associated with fever, loss of appetite, and overall malaise.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is another excellent herbal remedy for colds and flu. For best results, take garlic in high doses at the same time as you take your nutritional supplements. High-quality deodorized garlic capsules are more effective in this regard than garlic cloves because they offer more concentrated doses of allicin, garlic’s active ingredient, which has been shown to increase immune function and to stimulate the production of flu antibodies.

According to Jonathan Wright, M.D., a leading holistic physician, the following herbal combination formula is also excellent for both colds and flu: cayenne pepper, echinacea, myrrh, osha (also known as Porter’s lovage), and red clover. This combination can be taken as a tea (3-5 cups per day) or as a tincture (30 drops of each herb, four times daily).

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies for colds and flu include Aconitum napellus, Allium cepa, Belladonna, Baptisia, Belladonna, Eupatorium perfoliatum, Natrum muriaticum, Nux vomica, and Viscum album (mistletoe), an homeopathic remedy that can be taken both orally or by injection.

Another popular homeopathic remedy for colds and flu is Oscillococcinum, which is widely used in Europe. For best results, at the onset of your symptoms, take six pellets dissolved under the tongue, every six hours. As with other homeopathic remedies above, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes before and after each use.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy helps to strengthen the immune system and detoxify the body. For colds and flu, consider contrast hydrotherapy, which involves exposing your body to alternating hot and cold water as you shower.

Another useful approach is to make a throat or chest compress before bed. Do this by applying a warm washcloth to your throat and chest, followed by a cold cotton wrap to the same areas of your body. Cover your neck with a wool scarf and your chest with a wool sweater and go to sleep.

Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia helps to stimulate immune function and detoxification through sweating and artificial fever. This can be accomplished by using hot baths or showers, hot water compresses, or far-infared sauna treatments. While soaking in a hot bath or in the sauna, you can enhance the benefits of hyperthermia by drinking hot tea.

(Note: Your body temperature should never be permitted to rise above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent this from happening, monitor yourself and, if necessary, cool of by sponging with cold water.)

Juice Therapy: The following juice combinations can be helpful: carrot, beet, and cucumber; carrot, beet, tomato, green pepper, and watercress; carrot and celery; carrot and spinach; and lemon, orange, pineapple, black currant, elderberry juice. For added benefit, you can include garlic, ginger, and/or onion in any of the above juice combinations.

Nutritional Supplements: The following nutrients can be extremely helpful for dealing with colds and flu: vitamin A (50,000-100,00 liquid vitamin A 3-4 times a day for no more than five days total; avoid using if you are pregnant), vitamin C (2,000-5,000 mg of a powdered, mineral ascorbate twice a day until all symptoms have subsided), zinc (30-50 mg, once a day), selenium (200 to 800 mcg, once a day), and N-Acetyl-Cysteine, or NAC (600 mg, twice a day). Other useful nutrients include colostrum, thymus extract, and beta-1,3-glucan.

The late Robert Atkins, MD, founder of the Atkins Diet and an acclaimed holistic physician, recommended the following nutritional formula, which he advised taking every hour for up to ten doses during the first day of cold or flu symptoms:

Beta carotene: 5,000 IU

Vitamin A: 3,333 IU

Quercetin: 80 mg

Zinc: 25 mg

Vitamin C: 500 mg

Calcium pantothenate: 80 mg

Citrus bioflavonoids: 80 mg

Selenium: 30 mcg

Magnesium: 15 mg

Garlic capsules with allicin: 160 mg

Folic acid: 400 mcg

Dimethylglycine HCL: 20 mg

Pyridoxine HCL: 4 mg

Riboflavin: 2 mg

Copper (chelate): 1 mg

Niacinamide: 15 mg

As a general preventive measure, Dr. Atkins recommended supplementing with this formula once or twice a day, and up to three times a day for people who were very susceptible to colds and flu.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): In addition to acupuncture, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine also recommend the following herbal remedies for treating colds and flu: Bi yan pian, for sneezing, sinus congestion, itchy eyes, and/or hay fever; Bo ying powder, for fever, headaches, cough, upset stomach, diarrhea, or vomiting, especially in children; and Yinqiao, at the first sign of a cold or flu. Loquat syrup is also advised to help eliminate phlegm and relieve sinus congestion.

Another common Chinese herb, ephedra (also known as ma-huang), has been used in China for thousands of years to treat colds and flu. Although recently banned by the Food and Drug Administration, ephedra is still allowed to be used by practitioners of TCM. In addition, many over-the-counter cold and flu medications contain ephedrine, a synthetic derivative of ephedra.

(Note: Ephedra can increase blood pressure and heart rate, and therefore should be avoided by people with most heart conditions or high blood pressure, and by pregnant women.)

Books

Time Enough For Love by Robert Heinlein. Heinlein was one of the masters of speculative fiction during the golden age of science fiction. This novel is a wonderful account of Lazarus Long at the end of his 2300-plus years of life and, in my opinion it’s one of the most entertaining and mentally stimulating books Heinlein ever wrote. I truly enjoyed rereading it and highly recommend it.

The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke. Originally a comic book miniseries, this tale is now available as a two-volume trade paperback and a deluxe hardcover edition. I am a huge and lifelong fan of comic books, and this tale brings the medium into the mainstream with its sophisticated re-imagining of the introduction of seminal superheroes such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and (my personal all-time favorite) Batman in the years of the repressive McCarthy era and into the “new frontier” espoused by John F. Kennedy. If at all possible, read the deluxe edition. It’s a masterpiece of story and lavish production values.
