Imagination and Health
A number of years ago, I awoke from a dream with the following thought in my head: I seem to be a figment of my own Imagination. I was so struck by this that I wrote it down. Also years ago, I had the pleasure of teaching students in my grade school alma mater in an after school creative writing class. One of the first things I told them was that, when it comes to creative writing, the first and final authority on how stories, poems, etc., ought to be told is the writer him or herself. Similarly, I told them, when it comes to our lives and how it ought to be lived, there is only one expert – ourselves. With that encouragement, all 12 students in my class soon developed more confidence in themselves and their creative output soared from week to week, affording me one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had.
In our class, we also discussed Imagination, which I redefined as I Make A Nation, since, when we imagine stories in poems, that is a fair approximation of what we do – literally making up the worlds, characters, themes and plots that we create. At the same time, I encouraged my students to take full responsibility for their creative efforts so that what they wrote rang true for them. Responsibility, I told them, to me means “respond ability” or “ability to respond,” which is just another way of saying freedom.
When we take responsibility, we don’t make excuses. If something doesn’t “ring true,” we admit it and then work to the best of our best ability to rectify things. To writers, this process is known as editing and revision (re vision).
I no longer lead that class, yet the lessons my students and I explored continue to serve me. In the past year or so, I’ve been exploring how they apply to health and illness. In doing so, I’ve also returned to the first idea I shared above: I seem to be a figment of my own Imagination. The more I explore that idea, the more I am realizing how true it is. As far as I’m concerned, it literally means that the many roles I play in life are roles that either I or someone else has literally made up for me. This is something I’ve long known. What’s new and exciting for me these days is my realization that the roles can be changed any time I wish to do so. Meaning that my life, just as anything else I “write,” can be edited and revised, which further means that there are no true limitations as to how my life story unfolds. The key, of course, lies in my taking responsibility for it.
As I’ve been examining the various roles I play, I am asking myself if they are roles I want to continue in because I truly enjoy them. Those that are I then give further attention to by imagining how I might make those roles even more enjoyable for myself. As I do so, I then imagine that those changes already exist. And then I let them occur organically without worrying about the hows and whys that might be involved in making what I’ve imagined reality. Whenever I manage to do this as eloquently as I’m describing it here, the positive changes I decide I want tend to have a way of showing up pretty rapidly. For example, a few months ago, I decided that I wanted to create more free time for myself so that I can start to spend time exploring various things that my previous writing schedule didn’t allow for. As soon as I made that decision, I then imagined an ideal set of circumstances that would allow for that to happen. Soon thereafter I received an email a that resulted in the exact circumstances I imagined.
Before going further, let me make one thing clear. This process of Imagination that I am discussing here has little to do with the namby-pamby New Age mumbo jumbo that is currently being touted in the film and movie, The Secret. It requires time and effort and a fair deal of work to honestly and effectively re-imagine and recreate our lives. In other words, it takes a lot of responsibility. Yet, in our society, there is a pervasive tendency to want a quick fix solution for our problems (a pill, an herb, a book) and/or a demand that someone else fix them for us (family, spouses, partners, doctors, gurus, government officials, etc). Such a tendency has nothing to do with responsibility, as far as I’m concerned.
Having said that, let’s explore how Imagination is related to health. As we consider this question, one thing that becomes clear is that, as a nation, we seem to be putting an increasing amount of attention not on health, but disease. Which, I think, accounts for how widespread chronic illness is in our country. (We get what we focus on.) We also spend a lot of time talking about various causes of disease and what can be done to prevent them or at least minimize our exposure to them. This newsletter does this as much as any other health publication, including in the self-care article below. Nor do I see anything wrong with that. After all, part of taking responsibility for one’s health involves knowing what risks to be aware of and then making lifestyle choices accordingly. Yet, if eating healthily, leading a healthy lifestyle, and minimizing our bodies’ toxic burden and so forth were all that were necessary to be and stay healthy, how do we account for the fact that some people who do all of those things die young or succumb to chronic degenerative diseases, while others who smoke, drink and eat whatever they feel like eating can live to a ripe old age with no health problems to speak of?
A clue to answering this question might be found in a comment made by a man in Japan some years ago. At the time he was thought to be the oldest person in the world. Well past 100 years of age, he was still going strong when he was interviewed. The interviewer noted that he was a chain smoker and that he drank lots of sake throughout the day. Asked what he considered to be the secret to his longevity, the man shrugged, then smiled and said, “I only do things that make me happy.”
When we follow the lead of our Imagination and actually take action to make what we imagine real, happiness, I find, inevitably results. As what we imagine becomes reality, satisfaction follows. Moreover, the creative process that results in “editing reality” brings with it a feeling of excitement that further fuels our creativity and increases our confidence that we can continue to adventurously create our lives from ever increasing levels of boldness.
Even so, how many of us actually live our lives this way on a regular basis? I certainly don’t, although now that I have tasted how delicious doing so is I am doing so more and more. This lack of living from our Imagination, I believe, is precisely why so many of us become sick. In fact, I have long been convinced that illness of any sort is actually a gift we give to ourselves in order to reevaluate our lives so that we can better recognize what needs our attention and changing. This view is supported by people I’ve interviewed who recovered from cancer despite being told by their doctors that there was nothing more that could be done for them.
Each long-term cancer survivor I’ve interviewed has told me that getting cancer was “the best thing that ever happened” to them precisely because of how it forced them to reconsider the lives they were living. In every case, these same people discovered things about their lives that no longer served them and then took action to stop engaging in them. In some cases, that meant leaving careers and/or relationships and then committing themselves to living their dreams in whatever time they had left to them. Many of these people, upon doing so, experienced spontaneous remissions and are now living far different lives than those they had before they were diagnosed with cancer. And all of them claim to be far happier and more fulfilled. Though my sister Andrea ultimately passed away after dealing with cancer for 5 years, she too made huge and bold changes in her life and fulfilled every one of her remaining life dreams. As a result, when she passed, she did so joyously and without fear and in the last year of her life she also told me that her illness was a gift. (Because of her shift in attitude and her commitment to change, Andrea lived for three and a half years after being told she would likely be dead in three to six months and bedridden throughout that time.)
The way that all of this ties into health and Imagination has, I think, mostly to do with a willingness on our part to first truly imagine what it is we want for ourselves, and then to be willing to do whatever is necessary on our part to make it happen. This means foregoing excuses and putting an end to relying on others and/or external circumstances for our fulfillment. For our happiness, like our health, is first and foremost our responsibility.
Moreover, if, as my dream implied, we really are figments of our own Imagination, why not imagine that best version of ourselves that we can possibly be. This includes being as healthy as you want to be. So, if you are currently experiencing less than optimal health, here is an experiment I invite you to try: Imagine that there exists a version of yourself who is a radiant picture of health. Really bring your senses into this and allow yourself to fully explore what a radiantly healthy you would be like. How does this radiant you life his or her life? What choices does s/he make and what activities does s/he partake in? Imagine all of this on a daily basis for at least five to ten minutes at a time, and as you do so really feel what it is like to be that radiantly healthy you. And then assume that you are that person. And then watch yourself start to become that version of yourself.
In the field of mind/body medicine, there are many documented cases of people who have cured themselves of illness, including cancer, using versions of this technique, which is known by various names, such as creative visualization and guided imagery. I prefer calling it Make Believe because that sounds like more fun.
Will your health improve if you engage in this exercise? You won’t know unless you try it. I encourage you to do so.
Now, in a bit of synchronicity, here is an essay I just received as an email from Jon Rappoport, creator of www.nomorefakenews.com and also an explorer of the Imagination. Since I think it’s relevant to this discussion, I’m sharing it with you. Enjoy and happy imaginings. And please feel free to write me about your experiences doing so.
What Do You Want Them To Sell You? By Jon Rappoport
June 14, 2007. Time and time again, people return to the spiritual quest, and when they do, they look for a Big Idea.
They go shopping in the metaphysical supermarket, and they come out of the express lane with a bag, and inside is the glowing Idea.
Sometimes, they buy the Idea because it belongs to the ancient past, when, of course, everyone was smarter.
Or the Idea is something that's being "channeled" by a person right now, scooped in from another realm where, of course, everything is filled with wisdom.
In one way or another, the source of the Idea is painted as unimpeachable. Absolute. Completely trustable.
That's the main thing.
Here is the most interesting trick. Whatever the content of the Idea is, it will eventually result in the believer becoming passive. In the presence of the Idea and all it stands for, the person will go limp. He will do that.
Some part of him will go to sleep.
In fact, most people associate "the spiritual life;' with going to sleep. They don't know that, but eventually that's the way it works out.
So you get a neat equation: rising in spiritual knowledge and insight=going to sleep.
People will never admit this. But this kind of sleep is what they are looking for. They're after a dependence on some Idea that puts them in a trance.
In many ways, this person may remain active, but in that very important place, he's asleep. And he likes this.
So if you begin to talk to this person about spiritual matters, you must talk in a way he understands as "trance" or "surrender" or "sleep." If you don't, he automatically rejects what you're saying. He knows it's wrong, because everything he relies on tells him his spiritual core is really in a trance state.
I hope you understand this, because it's very important. The entire history of spiritual movements and systems and religions on this planet are all about this Sleep. This place in the center of consciousness where nothing is going on.
To look at it from the other side of the same coin, if you talk to people about ACTION and claim that you're talking about Spirit, they draw a blank. They don't understand. They think you're way off base. For them, the life and essence of spirit couldn't be about action.
Action is what you do in the every-day world. You work, you strive, you solve problems. All these things are action and they have nothing to do with that particular S-spot in their minds where the reservation is permanently booked for Sleep, for the Idea, for the surrender to the Idea, for the trance.
In other words, in this world, everything is backwards.
You can pick up clues about the Big Sleep in what people say. "I'm trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do in my life." "I think the Universe wants me to do this."
Statements like these---if you had a special kind of radar tracking system---would lead you right back to that place where people are in the Big Sleep.
They don't know what THEY want to do in their lives. They don't want to start creating what they want. So instead, they rely on the Idea they bought in the supermarket. They're always on the phone with that Idea, they're listening, and they're waiting for the Idea to tell them what to do.
These people are curled around the Idea they bought, this Blanket they bought. Because they're tuned into that exact central spot in their own minds where they're asleep, they tend to stay that way.
So the years roll by, and these people don't seem to launch into big-time action. They just keep stalling and stalling at the gate. They keep sifting through the messages they think they're getting from the other end of that phone line.
In the next phase of this weirdness, they will start finding things wrong with themselves to explain their own lack of action. They need a reason. They'll find one. "My hearing must be diminished. I'm on the phone and I'm not getting a clear and specific message from the Big Idea, so I must be going deaf. I better do something about that…"
And on and on it goes. Down and down it goes.
"I must need a different form of meditation."
"I need to go deeper in my understanding of myself."
"I need more faith."
"I need a medicine for my hearing."
"Now my leg hurts. I'd better get it treated."
Their whole journey is taking them further and further away from action. It's taking them further away from deciding what they really want to do in life. It's taking them further away from actually creating what they want.
It's no longer about what they want at all. Now it's about what they're SUPPOSED TO want.
It's becoming more abstract.
It's almost sounding like they're going for sainthood. But really, it's an abdication of self.
Happens all the time.
Used to happen, in the old days, in certain societies---and still does in a whole lot of places in the world---that people weren't ALLOWED to do what they wanted to do. They could get killed for that. But here, in America, we've got all kinds of people who have lots of material possessions, and they can't even figure out what they actually want, deep down. Quite strange, quite ironic.
So let's get it straight.
FINDING OUT WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO CREATE, AND THEN CREATING IT, IS A PATH OF SPIRIT.
ALL THE ANSWERS YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO FIND OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BIG SLEEP CURLED AROUND THE BIG IDEA? YOU FIND OUT THOSE ANSWERS WHEN YOU LIVE AN ACTION-FILLED CREATIVE LIFE.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Relieving Insect Bites and Stings
Bites or stings from insects can cause allergic reactions or pain. Symptoms of insect bites and stings also include swelling, redness, pain, dizziness, loss of breath, and anxiety.
What To Consider
Though insect bites and stings are not serious for most people, for hypersensitive people they can potentially cause a fatal allergic reaction. People with known hypersensitivities should carry a kit containing antihistamine and epinephrine when in areas likely to hold risk.
Practical Hints: If you have a known allergy to insect bites and stings, take preventive measures when outdoors, such as wearing pants, long-sleeve shirts, footwear, and gloves and avoiding cosmetics, perfumes, and hairsprays, all of which can attract insects.
Self-Care Tips
Nutritional Supplementation: Take vitamin C as soon as possible, along with vitamin B5. Vitamin E applied topically can also help.
Aromatherapy: The essential oils of basil, cinnamon, garlic, lavender, lemon, onion, sage, savory, and thyme are all useful due to their antitoxic and antivenomous properties. Lavender is also effective for treating itching from stings.
Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy CreamÒ applied topically can soothe itching and speed healing.
Herbs: Apply the fresh juice aloe vera or plantain to the sting to soothe pain and stimulate healing.
Homeopathy: Take Aconite, Lachesis, Apis mel., Hypericum, or Urtica Urens immediately after you are bitten or stung.
Hydrotherapy: A cold compress or ice pack applied as needed can help to reduce pain and swelling.
Topical Treatment: Apply ice and vinegar or vinegar and lemon juice or a paste made of bicarbonate of soda as soon as possible to neutralize the venom. Crush a charcoal tablet on a cotton ball, place over sting, and cover with bandage to reduce pain and swelling. Mud applied to the site of the bite or sting will help draw out toxins as it dries.
CAUTION: If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. Also, if you experience symptoms such as flushing, generalized hives, swelling around the neck or tongue, difficulty breathing, faintness, or loss of consciousness or diarrhea after you are bitten or stung by an insect, immediately consult your physician or go to the emergency room.

Biogeneology: Decoding the Psychic Roots of Illness by Patrick Obissier. This book is largely influenced by the research of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, formerly a leading oncologist in Germany, who discovered and scientifically verified that all illness is preceded by a “life shock” that has been left unresolved. Obissier takes Hamer’s research a step further, pointing out that illness can also be due to unresolved life patterns that are passed on to us by our ancestors. In reading this book, you will discover a new paradigm by which both health and illness may be understood – one, I believe, that will eventually lead to a widespread acceptance that all illnesses are indeed gifts that, rather than seeking to destroy us, are actually manifestations of the body’s innate design to keep us alive. Given that the very medical organizations that have sought to destroy Dr. Hamer and his work have admitted that over 6000 cancer patients were still alive five years or more after they underwent Hamer’s work (now known as German New Medicine – for an overview, see http://www.germannewmedicine.ca), the information contained in this book should not be overlooked by anyone serious about taking responsibility for their own health. I highly recommend it.
The Formula by Steve Shagan. This book is an engaging crime novel, the plot of which revolves around claims that Nazi Germany was able to run its armies with a fuel derived from coal that was an is a viable alternative to oil. Though a work of fiction, it contains a lot of interesting historical information that would seem to confirm the existence of such a fuel, as well as providing a grim picture of the machinations engaged in by IG Farben, the Germany multi-conglomerate that operated the Nazi concentration camps and in large part spawned our modern day pharmaceutical cartels. As far as I know, the book is out of print, but you can track down a copy via amazon.com’s network of used booksellers.
