A Conversation About Gardasil
What follows is a series of email exchanges I had with Peter, G, one of my readers. Peter, who resides in Australia, has a keen interest in cancer from both a preventive and therapeutic perspective given that he is himself a person with cancer. I very much appreciated his emails to me, all of which are imbued with intelligence and passion. What follows are our email exchanges repositioned in the form of an online conversation (note that they actually occurred over a period of days; additionally, where necessary, I shortened the website links that both Peter and I recommended to each other, using www.tinyurl.com to do so).
Peter: Larry, I think you are just plain wrong on Gardasil. I am an avid follower of integrative medicine, and have no connection with Merck or Gardasil - other than that a fellow Australian (Dr. Sinclair) developed the vaccine. It is becoming increasingly evident that HPV is associated with a lot of cancers - not just cervical cancer. These include head and throat cancer, bladder cancer (which I have), and the most recent discovery is the presence of HPV in breast cancer. It appears to gain access via the nipple during bathing. The vaccine protects against the most significant forms of HPV. For the first time, we have a vaccine that actually works 100% against these cancers. That should be cause for celebration. Since Nixon declared war on cancer, it has been one disappointment after another. Here for the first time we have something that actually works, and all we get is misplaced criticism. Why? Because it marketed by a bunch of crooks at Merck? Sorry, that not sufficient grounds for me to agree with your views on this issue. To my way of thinking those views are just as narrow as the medical establishment we are all (including me) are so fond of criticizing.
Larry: Thanks for your thoughtful comments and criticisms, Peter. I appreciate you taking the time to write me. If you can show me proof that Gardasil does indeed protect against HPV 100% of the time, and that doing so, in turn, it does protect againstcervical and/or other cancers 100% as well, I'll be happy to let my readers know about this. I have yet to see anything that convinces me that Gardasil does either. (In fact, I know of no therapy, allopathic or alternative that is 100% effective for anything.) Additionally, I am very disturbed by the potential side effects Gardasil can cause, as well as how the studies that were used to gain its approval were, to my mind, flawed. I say flawed for the simple reason that the control group received aluminum adjuvant, which likely increased the incidence and severity of the control group's side effects, allowing Merck to claim that,
comparatively, the side effects caused by Gardasil were within a close enough range of the control group's, thus making Gardasil suitable for approval. Don't forget, this is Merck we are talking about. The same company that knew Vioxx increased the risk of heart attack and stroke years before the FDA approved it, and which knowingly kept that data from the FDA. Moreover, if Gardasil is as effective as you believe, please tell me why Merck is so vigorously lobbying to have states in the US make it mandatory, etc? Were the vaccine's effectiveness as proven as you claim, I doubt there would be a need to take this aggressive marketing stance (you should see the commercials they are already running here). The science itself would be enough to secure the marketing. Finally, I am always leery of the use of any type of drug for which there are no long-term studies, since that makes it impossible to know of potential risks that may occur down the road.
None of which is to say you are wrong and I am right. However, my initial article on Gardasil was distributed to a discussion group of leading integrative physicians across the world. It's a large membership and one that is very vocal in their views. Thus far, not one of them has disagreed with me on this. Yet I'll be the first to admit, as Einstein said, consensus does not make for good science.
Peter: Hi Larry. You requested evidence on the efficacy of Gardasil, and here are today’s
results of the first 3 years of trials, some held here in Melbourne: http://tinyurl.com/yvtnwe
I am rather surprised by your comment that you will advise your readers if Gardasil is proven to be 100% protective. Larry, since when did you limit your published recommendation to any treatment that is guaranteed 100% effective against cancer? If that is the criteria, then you would never recommend ANY treatment.
The vaccine successfully targets about 70% of cervical cancer cases, and 90% of genital wart cases. It does not work on women already infected with HPV, even though it may work if the patient is infected by just one HPV type. So there is no question of it taking out 100% of cervical cancers. But, the research suggests it might also take out some head, neck, bladder and breast cancers.
I am a great fan of Mercola, Ralph Moss, Mike Adams, and yourself, but you have all trashed Gardasail - and I find that truly amazing. The biggest objection seems to be that Merck has licensed the technology. But, as I said previously, hatred of Merck is a very poor reason for bagging this product. After billions of dollars invested (wasted) on cancer research, Gardasil is the ONLY vaccine that truly prevents cancer. And not just a single cancer - a number of cancers. Where in the history of cancer research, in particular PREVENTATIVE cancer research, is there anything that comes close to Gardasil? It is going to save many lives. Gardasil is derived from conventional research and is marketed in the 'conventional' manner. As much as we all despise most of what conventional medicine dishes up, when on those rare occasions they get it right- we should applaud and encourage it, not try and dismantle it. I figure the recent critical comments made on the web about Gardasil are going to look rather silly to readers in 10 or 20 years.
Larry: Hi, Pete - thanks for writing once more. I read the link you sent me and my views on Gardasil remain the same. I don't have time in this reply to rebut the article point by point, so am instead sending you an article from today's LA Times that casts a damper on the Gardasil hype (you'll note that it refers to the studies about which you apprised me - also note the New England Journal of Medicine’s commentary that accompanied them). [Reader can access the LA Times article, entitled “Study casts new doubts on HPV vaccine,” here: http://tinyurl.com/ywfnot -LT] Given the serious side effects that Gardasil has already been shown to cause as a result of the studies that led to its FDA approval, and the fact that there is no proven link between HPV and cancer, cervical or otherwise (nor are pre-cancerous lesions always an indication of cancer), I remain confident that the drug is far more hype than solution. You are completely correct about my comments about 100% effectiveness, however. Definitely irresponsible on my part.
Peter (referring to the LA Times article I cited above – LT): I think you will find the 17 % refers to women who have been pre-infected with HPV. Hence the reason for its recommended use in pre-pubescent females.
Those who are not pre-infected with HPV are protected about 70%. That’s not a bad result in anyone's language.
I won’t bother to rebut your claim that HPV is not proven to cause cancer - other than to say the evidence is overwhelming to the contrary. There is probably nothing in this life we can say for absolute certain. But, those who prefer to believe the 5% possibility, and ignore the 95% probability are perhaps being more biased than objective.
It’s interesting to note that some HPV virus types may be proliferating as a result of the vaccinated absence of HPV 16 and 18, however if so, it appears that these are less 'carcinogenic', and the subject of another vaccine in the pipeline. If however the elimination of HPV 16 and 18 only served to increase the risk of other equally 'cancerous' HPV strains, then I would have to agree the current vaccine would be questionable. However, that does not appear to be the case. As it stands, it is early days - and there is a knowledge gap, however the vaccine appears to protect pre-infected females from about 70% of the HPV viruses, and these happen to be the viruses that are most problematic. I argue that’s a particularly good result. I expect it would even better if it were 100%, but from my experience, 100% and cancer appear to be mutually exclusive.
Larry: Pete, let's just agree to disagree because we are certainly at odds on this issue and we both think the facts support our position. But I will challenge you on this point: If the evidence is "overwhelming" that HPV causes cervical cancer, why does the National Cancer Institute itself state that there is no proven causative link?
I've investigated cancer for many years and know many people who have achieved long-term remissions after previously being told they had six months or less to live. In every one of their cases, they regained their health by working with physicians who recognize that cancer is caused by a multiple of factors all working together and which therefore must all be addressed. None of these doctors, many of whom I've met and interviewed,
state that they have a "cure" for cancer; they simply have much higher success rates for treating it than the rates achieved by conventional cancer care overall (certain cancers respond very well to conventional treatments). This, of course, calls into question the HPV=cervical cancer hypothesis even were the evidence if favor of said equation overwhelming, as you say. In addition, given that there is a direct correlation between overall burdens in the body and cancer's ability to take hold and spread, the proven insults to the body that Gardasil has been shown to cause (again, see the studies that led to FDA approval, which I mentioned in my original article about Gardasil), and the fact that no truly long-term studies of its safety and efficacy have been conducted (3 years is not nearly enough time), I would, as the NEJM editorial physicians advised, "proceed cautiously."
Peter: Larry, I don’t necessarily disagree with what you say, and especially I agree caution is required - no matter what the treatment. This especially applies if it is a new treatment. But the difficulty here is that the 'alternative' practioners appear in concert in bagging the vaccine outright. One gets the strong impression the mind is made up, and entrenched positions are being taken. The reasons appear to be threefold:
1. The FDA has approved Gardasil, and the FDA is so entwined with the commercial interests/drug companies it cannot be trusted to make an objective assessment on the safety and efficacy of these treatments.
2. The 'history' surrounding FDA/Merck.
3. The general mistrust in the alternative community with vaccination in general
I will not get bogged down in this aspect other than to say:
1. Vaccination appears to have served mankind extremely well. Lots of suggestions it causes lots of conditions but nothing much in the way of hard evidence.
2. The FDA is an abomination - which unfortunately has the support of the US Senate.
3. The FDA - NCI - Big Pharma axis is truly diabolical. Just about every aspect of the American health system is a shambles - and to a lesser extent my country, Australia. It has been destroyed by its emphasis on commercialization (profiteering) at the expense of patient care - and we seem powerless to do anything to change it.
I am in complete agreement that tumorgenesis is multifactoral, and needs to be treated at multiple levels. This is a major deficiency in Western medicine. I support a combination of conventional and alternative treatments - much in the way some German clinics do. However, Gardasil is (principally) not a treatment (except for the fortunate 17% of pre-infected), it is a preventative. It doesn’t need to attack the HPV virus at multiple levels if it is pre-empting the virus doing its worst. There are hundreds of Medline references to HPV and cancer, especially cervical cancer. I shall refer you to just three very obscure ones, bladder, breast and throat cancer. Whilst the association is not categorically proven, there is extremely strong circumstantial evidence linking HPV to these cancers.
1. Breast Cancer: http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v94/n2/full/6602944a.html
2. Bladder Cancer: http://www.smokershistory.com/hpvbladd.htm
3. Throat Cancer: http://tinyurl.com/23s9cc [published, Peter noted, on the day he wrote this entry – LT]
It is probable that in each of these there are other contributing risk factors, but its an extraordinary coincidence they are all linked to HPV in some way. The elimination of that common factor might well protect these people from contracting cancer.
I do not object to constructive criticism of Gardasil, but it seems to me it has been unfairly dismissed by the alternative medicine industry - without a great deal of evidence. Sure we can all wait until there is a 100% guarantee it is safe and a 100% guarantee it is effective. That might take many years - or probably never. In the meantime, people are dying - perhaps unnecessarily. The responsibility of every practitioner - first and foremost - is to save lives. When entrenched positions get in the way of that, as occurs regularly in conventional medicine, then it abrogates that considerable responsibility. Perhaps I am overly enthused with the development of cancer preventatives - as distinct from cancer treatments - and maybe it is affecting my judgement. But I believe the balanced approach is to convey both the positive and negatives of any new treatment. Thus far, the alternative industry in general have non-objectively focused on the negatives. Maybe that's a reaction to the drug industry hype, but nonetheless I think it is quite imprudent.
Larry: Hi, Pete - you raise some good points and I'm glad you are aware of how cancer is treated in Germany. Even mainstream conventional care there is vastly different that what we see here in the US. That said, these comments:
1) I am unaware of the "alternative community" attacking Gardasil in any organized way. I have in fact seen little objection to its use from said sector here in the States. In fact, Peter Chowka wrote about the lockstep assent and/or silence that is coming from many within the CAM community on this issue (see: www.naturalhealthvillage.com). (Peter also makes the point that CAM is not the same thing as alternative medicine, and he's quite correct, as I've witnessed firsthand over the last decade or so - increasingly alternative medicine has been co-opted by Big Medicine, money having a very loud voice in my country.) In any event, I find those within the community who are urging caution about Gardasil are not being "imprudent" in the least, given the lack of long-term safety and efficacy studies for the vaccine, along with the serious side effects it's already been shown to cause (more on that below).
2) Were the link between HPV and cervical and other cancers as strong as you say, I would wager that the NCI would be loudly proclaiming that fact today, since it and the FDA are very much in Big Pharma's pockets and do their utmost to see that Big Pharma holds sway in the market place.
3) You are misformed about how well vaccination has actually served mankind, and that there is a lack of hard evidence against vaccination. The evidence exists and you can find it online if you are interested.
4) Tumorgenesis, multifactorial as it most definitely is, may not even be the problem with cancer and even if it is, it is, in my opinion, a "downstream event," to use the phrase of Dr. Valerie Hunt. She has proven conclusively that all disease begins in the human energy field first, and may occur there years before there are any physical manifestations that can be detected. I am fortunate to know her and have seen her research on this. This being so, vaccines may exacerbate health issues, given their disrupted, anti-cohesive effect on the field. Added to this idea is the research showing that at least 90 percent of all cancer and heart disease patients are predisposed to chronic anger and depression and are son for years before their diseases manifest (C. Norman Shealy refers to this fact often and you can find cites for the studies in his books). No vaccine, nor any other chemical agent, effectively addresses these mental/emotional aspects of illness. See also Hamer's New Medicine for more on this. Formerly one of Germany's leading conventional oncologists, Dr. Hamer, at great cost to himself professionally and personally, has extensively documented findings in this area.
4) I recognize that Gardasil is not a treatment. As for it being a preventative, if so, it's not one for cancer itself, and as the studies in the MEJM indicate, it's effectiveness against the four main HPV strains said to cause cervical and other cancers is not as great as advertised, providing only "modest" results.
5) In all of your comments to me, you seem to ignore the serious side effects that were caused by Gardasil in the studies that led to its approval. I find that odd, given how severe they can potentially be. Anything that can cause such insults to the body is not something I am apt to jump on the bandwagon about.
6) Finally, were Gardasil as good as Merck would have us all believe, there would have been no need for the company to so actively promote it, to the point of actually trying to get the vaccine to be mandatory in the US via intense lobbying of elected officials. You can be sure that if something truly did act as a cancer preventative, the proof alone would have led to a huge demand for it, ensuring Merck the huge profits it is looking to make from Gardasil's sales.
That said, I bring my end of the discussion to a close. Please know that I very much appreciate and enjoyed your comments, Pete.
Best, Larry
Since these exchanges between Peter and myself, evidence has come into light suggesting that Gardasil does indeed pose serious health risks and can even cause death. Last week, I wrote of how it caused the polio-like condition known as Guillain-Barre syndrome in a young girl in Nevada (though health officials there, along with spokespersons for Merck and the CDC deny this). Since that time, the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch has created a website (http://judicialwatch.org/6299.shtml) that documents three deaths caused by Gardasil and over 1600 serious side effects since it began to be administered here in the US. This evidence is also being disputed by Merck and others. Despite their denials, I doubt that this is the last we will hear of death and serious injury caused by Gardasil.
Additionally, I made mention of the work of Dr. Ryke Hamer, a German oncologist who has proven that all illnesses, including cancer, are first and foremost a result of biological conflicts that arise because of unresolved life issues. I’m convinced that Dr. Hamer has uncovered the missing link to health, healing, and disease, and that his work presages an entirely new approach to how illnesses will be treated in the future. To learn more about his discoveries, I highly recommend that you visit www.germannewmedicine.ca.
A Review of Juice Alive
(The following review is scheduled to appear soon in the Natural Cures newsletter. I’m happy to share it with you. – LT)
Drink Your Way to Health
Regularly consuming fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices is one of the most powerful self-care tools you can use to flood your body with an abundant supply of vitamin, minerals, enzymes, and other essential nutrients. In JUICE ALIVE, authors Steven Bailey, ND, and Larry Trivieri provide all the guidance you need to learn how to make a wealth of nutritious and delicious juices, as well as many health smoothies. Dr. Bailey has been juicing for nearly 40 years and has used juice therapy as a primary component of his overall natural approach for treating a wide range of illnesses. The breadth of his knowledge in this area is amply displayed in Part Two of JUICE ALIVE, which features multiple juice combinations for helping to heal and prevent over 100 of our most common diseases. This section alone is worth many times the price of the book, and that is not all you will learn by reading it.
JUICE ALIVE begins with an in-depth discussion of why juicing is so beneficial and how anyone can easily make it a part of their daily health routine. They then explore the history of juicing, from ancient India, Greece and Rome, through the Middle Ages, the naturopathic tradition, right through to today. This fascinating slice of history makes it clear that juicing is far more than a health fad. Did you know that Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, was a strong advocate of juicing? So was John Hall, a renowned physician and herbalist and William Shakespeare’s son-in-law. From there, JUICE ALIVE moves on to discuss the many health benefits that juicing provides. A particularly valuable element of this section of the book is the authors’ discussion of how juicing helps to create acid-alkaline balance in the body.
By reading JUICE ALIVE, you will discover how to juice and when and how you should consume the delicious juices that the authors encourage you to make. You will also learn Dr. Bailey’s dietary recommendations as well as how to do a juice fast, another health therapy that Dr. Bailey is a leading expert in. You’ll also learn how to easily create nutritionally-rich smoothies and health tonics, as well as how juicing can even to improve your physical appearance in the chapter on Juicing and Beauty (to the authors’ credit, they emphasize that true beauty is first and foremost a quality that is found within us). Also included is very helpful information on the types of juicers that are available on the market, as well as recommendations for the best juicers in each category as well as price. All told, JUICE ALIVE is a highly recommended book that all health conscious individuals should have as part of their health library. Read it today and learn how to literally drink your way to vibrant health.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Relieving Sunburn
Sunburn refers to skin damage in the form of inflammation and/or burns to the skin caused by over-exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of sunlight. It typically occurs primarily in people who are fair-skinned.
Symptoms usually appear within 24 hours after excess exposure to sunlight, peaking at 72 hours, unless the sunburn is severe. The affected skin turns anywhere from a mild red to severe, dark red, with the skin becoming mildly tender and even painful and accompanied by swelling. Blisters can also appear.
What To Consider
Sunburn on the lower body and legs/feet is usually more painful and takes longer to heal. If a large portion of the skin is affected, symptoms such as chills, fever, weakness, and shock can result, as can secondary infections that can set in after the skin has peeled. The new skin may be very sensitive to touch and to further sunlight for several weeks.
There are three degrees of sunburn. First-degree burns only redden the skin, with other symptoms. Second-degree sunburn can cause swelling, pain and blisters that fill with water. Third-degree sunburn results in more severe damage to the skin, is more prone to infection, and must be seen by a doctor.
CAUTION: Repeated overexposure to the sun and sunburns increases aging of the skin and the risk of skin cancers.
In addition, certain pharmaceutical drugs can produce adverse reactions following exposure to sunlight. Ask your doctor if this is the case for medications you may be taking. If it is, avoid sunlight during peak hours.
Self-Care Tips
Lifestyle: The best treatment of sunburn is prevention. Your initial exposure to sun in the summer should be limited to 30 minutes during midday sun. The best time to be out in the sun is before 11 a.m. and after 3 p.m. being outside on cloudy summer days and foggy winter days, especially at higher altitudes, carries a greater risk of sunburn due to the same amount of ultraviolet exposure. Sunlight reflecting off of water, metal, snow, sand, and silvery objects can increase the risk of sunburn. Repeated overexposure to the sun and sunburns increases aging of the skin and increases risk of skin cancers.
Sunscreens: Although sunscreens have for years been touted as a preventive measure to protect against melanoma (skin cancer), new research indicates that sunscreens themselves can be instrumental in causing melanoma because of how they prevent the skin from producing vitamin D, an essential hormone-like nutrient that helps to inhibit the growth of melanoma and other cancers. The new research debunks the claim that sunscreens prevent cancer in humans. All they do is prevent sunburn. Moreover, research shows that the rise in melanoma rates are directly proportional to the sales rates of sunscreens. A more protective method is to avoid direct sunlight around an hour before and three hours after noon and/or to wear protective head gear (hats, visors, scarves, etc.) when outdoors.
Nutritional Supplementation: Mix the following together: vitamin A, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, zinc oxide, and aloe gel, and apply topically to the affected area. The following nurtrients taken orally can also be helpful: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
Aromatherapy: Should sunburn occur, spray the affected area with lavender and chamomile. To prevent blistering, also massage two to three drops of lavender oil directly into the affected area.
Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy Cream® applied topically helps soothe pain and improves healing time
Herbs: Apply cool aloe vera gel liberally to the sunburnt area. If you are badly sunburnt, apply a salve made with St. John’s wort and calendula flowers.
Homeopathy: Natrum mur. Is a useful homeopathic remedy for preventing sunburn, while Urtica Urens and, Rhus tox can help speed recovery after sunburn occurs. Calendula lotion applied topically is also helpful.
Hydrotherapy: Apply a cold compress immediately and repeat as needed to help relieve pain. Also take baths to which one cup of apple cider vinegar or oatmeal has been added, especially if you suffer from sunburn of the lower extremities.
Juice Therapy: Carrot juice can help speed recovery.
Topical Treatment: Apply a mixture of two parts apple cider vinegar and part extra virgin olive oil to the affected area. This will help soothe the pain and hasten the healing process. PABA cream applied topically can also be helpful, as can the gel from a feshly cut aloe vera leaf.
