New This Issue
Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. I’ve a lot of things to share with you this week, starting with an important piece of reporting by Shannara Johnson about CODEX and what it will mean for people everywhere if it is implemented as the special interests (Big Pharma, Big Agriculture, Big Chemical, etc) who are behind it desire. Dr. Rima Laibow, mentioned in the article, is someone I know personally and for whom I have a lot of respect. After reading the article, I encourage you to visit her website (see below) and take action. Your health and the health of your loved ones is at stake. Tied in with this is recent news that Big Pharma is n.o.w targeting our new Congress, which you'll also find out below.
I’m also sharing a piece by my cyber friend June Russell on the recent news about the health benefits of resveratrol. As June makes clear, just because this nutrient is found in wine is no reason to start drinking. You’ll also find a number of links to articles and websites in my Recommendations section that I hope you will read and visit. As well as self-care tips for preventing and managing blood clots.
As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.
Quote Of The Day
“Drugs are man’s way to try to bludgeon the body into a cure profitably and if there’s enough mon.ey to be made on it, research could be designed to prove that daylight doesn’t exist.”
-- Dr. Dean Burk, co-founder of the National Cancer Institute
Fast Fact
For every member of Congress (both House and Sen.ate) there are 50 lobbyists who, combined, spend approximately $2.4 billion each year in order to get favorable treatment for their special interest projects.

A Nutricidal Codex by Shannara Johnson
Ever heard of the Codex Alimentarius? If not, don’t be surprised. It’s one of the best-kept “open secrets” of the U.S. government. It’s scheduled to take effect on December 21, 2009, and it may present the greatest disaster for our food supply—and thus for our health—this country has ever seen.
What is the Codex Alimentarius, and how did it come to pass?
In the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1897 and 1911, a collection of standards and regula.tions for a wide variety of foods was developed, called the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus. It wasn’t legally binding but served as a useful reference for the courts to determine standards for specific foods.
The post-World War II rebirth of the Codex Alimentarius (or short, Codex), however, is much more dubious. To understand the full implications, we need to go back to the history of one huge conglomerate: The Interessengemeinschaft Farben, or IG Farben—a powerful cartel that consisted of German chemical and pharmaceutical companies such as BASF, Bayer, and Hoechst.
IG Farben was, you could say, the corporate arm of the Third Reich. Having lucrative contracts with Hitler’s regime, IG Farben produced everything from ammunition to Zyklon B, the nerve gas that was used to kill prisoners in the concentration camps. IG Farben was the single largest donor to Hitler’s election campaign… and later the single largest profiteer of World War II.
“Whenever the German Wehrmacht conquered another country, IG Farben followed, systematically taking over the industries of those countries,” states the website of the Dr. Rath Health Foundation, a non-profit promoter of natural health. “The U.S. government investigation of the factors that led to the Second World War in 1946 came to the conclusion that without IG Farben the Second World War would simply not have been possible.”
Auschwitz, the largest and most infamous German concentration camp, also benefited IG Farben. New, unsafe pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines were liberally tested on Auschwitz prisoners—many of which died during the tests.
Not surprising, the Nuremberg War Crime Tribunal prosecuted 24 IG Farben board members and executives for mass murder, slavery and other crimes against humanity. One of those convicted was Fritz ter Meer, the highest-ranking scientist on the executive board of IG Farben, who was sentenced to seven years in prison (of which he only served four). When asked during trial whether he thought those human experiments had been justified, he answered that “concentration camp prisoners were not subjected to exceptional suffering, because they would have been killed anyway.”
In 1955, ter Meer was reinstated as a member of the supervisory board at Bayer and one year later became its chairman. In 1962, together with other executives of BASF, Bayer and Hoechst, he was one of the main architects of the Codex Alimentarius.
“When he got out of jail, he went to his UN buddies,” said Dr. Rima Laibow, MD, in a passionate speech at the 2005 conference of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP). “And he said, ‘[…] If we take over food worldwide, we have power worldwide.’”
The result was the creation of a trade commission called the Codex Alimentarius Commission, n.o.w funded and run by the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
At its foundation in 1994, the World Trade Organization (WTO) accepted the standards of the Codex—and by the end of 2009, all member countries of the WTO will be required to implement the Codex, “to harmonize the standards” for the global trade of foods.
In the U.S. meanwhile, Congress passed the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in 1994, which defined vitamins, minerals and herbs as foods, therefore not to be regulated by pharmaceutical standards. The Codex Alimentarius would reverse all that. It would treat those dietary supplements not as foods, but as toxins.
“How do you protect somebody from a poison?” asks Laibow. “You use toxicology. You use a science called ‘risk assessment.’” Risk assessment, she explains, works as follows. You take the toxin in question, feed it to lab animals and “determine the dose that kills 50% of them. That’s called the LD 50. And you extrapolate what the LD 50 for a human being might be. Then you go down to the other end of the dosage range and you start feeding [little] bits of it to test animals, and you come up with the largest possible dose—the maximum permissible upper limit—that can be fed to an animal before a discernible impact is shown. […] Then you divide that by 100. […] And n.o.w you’ve got a safety margin, so you got 1/100 of the largest dose that can be given with no discernible impact.”
In other words, classified as toxins, vitamins, minerals and herbs would only be allowed to be marketed in doses that have no discernible impact on anyone. Then why bother taking them?
And that’s not all. Where our grocery and health food store shelves are n.o.w brimming with supplements, only 18 of them would be on the Codex whitelist. Everything not on the list, such as CoQ10, glucosamine, etc. would be illegal—not as in “prescription-only” illegal, but as in “take it and you go to jail” illegal.
But the mandatory requirements of the Codex will not only concern vitamins and minerals, but all foods. Under Codex rules, nearly all foods must be irradiated. And levels of radiation can be much higher than previously permitted.
While irradiated U.S. foods are currently treated with 1 – 7.5 kiloGray of radiation, the Codex would lift its already high limit of 10kiloGray—the equivalent of ca. 330 million chest X-rays—“when necessary to achieve a legit.imate technological purpose,” whatever that may be. Granted, the text says, that the dose of radiation “should not compromise consumer safety or wholesomeness of the food.” Note, however, that it says “should,” not “shall” (an important le.gal difference, since “should” is not compulsory).
You buy rBST-fr.ee milk? Not much longer, because under the Codex all dairy cows will have to be treated with Monsanto’s recombinant bovine growth hormone. All animals used for human consumption will have to be fed antibiotics. Organic standards will be relaxed to include such measures. And did we mention that under the Codex, genetically modified (GM) produce will no longer have to be labeled? Say good-bye to true organic food, and maybe even food that retains any resemblance of nutritional value.
Moreover, in 2001, twelve hazardous, cancer-causing organic chemicals called POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) were unanimously banned by 176 countries, including the United States. Codex Alimentarius will bring back seven of these forbidden substances—such as hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, and aldrin—to be freely used again. Permitted levels of various chemicals in foods will be upped as well.
What, are they trying to kill us?
Rima Laibow has done the math, she claims, using figures coming directly from the WHO and FAO. And according to those epidemiological projections, she believes that just the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline alone will result in about 3 billion deaths. “1 billion through simple starvation,” she says. “But the next 2 billion, they will die from the preventable diseases of under-nutrition.” She calls the new Codex standards “food regula.tions that are in fact the legalization of mandated toxicity and under-nutrition.” [My emphasis added – LT]
Even if you’re thinking of emigrating to Thailand or Guatemala to escape this nutritional holocaust, forget it. Once implemented, the Codex Alimentarius will set food safety standards, rules and regula.tions for over 160 countries, or 97% of the world’s population.
The only way is to fight it before it gets implemented, says Laibow, who is working on just that with a team of lawyers. If you want to help, send an email to your Congressman and/or sign the citizens petition on Laibow’s website, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org.

Big Pharma Targets Democrats in Congress
With the November elections resulting in Democratic control of both the House and Sen.ate, Big Pharma, along with many other special interests, is scrambling to see that its will is still carried out in Washington. This was made clear in a Washington Post article (Democrats' Victory Is Felt On K Street by Jeffrey H. Birnbaum, Washington Post, November 23, 2006; Page A01), which, among other things, stated:
<<Drug companies are particularly hungry for Democratic help, including the industry's trade association. “We woke up the day after the election to a new world,” said Ken Johnson, spokesman for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. “We're going to have tough days ahead of us”
A post-election e-mail to executives at the drug company GlaxoSmithKline details just how tough. "We n.o.w have fewer allies in the Sen.ate," says the internal memo, obtained by The Washington Post. “Thus, there is greater risk over the next two years that bad amendments will be offered to pending legislation.” The company's primary concerns are bills that would allow more imported drugs and would force price competition for drugs bought under Medicare.
The defeat of Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) “creates a big hole we will need to fill,” the e-mail says. Sen.-elect Jon Tester (D-Mont.) “is expected to be a problem," it says, and the elevation to the Sen.ate of Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) “will strengthen his ability to challenge us.”
The e-mail also mentions that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) “has worked closely" with the company and that the firm's PAC had supported six Democratic senators who faced reelection. “These relationships should help us moderate proposals offered by Sen.ate Democrats,” the e-mail says.
Explaining the memo, GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman Patricia Seif said: “It's important that we're knowledgeable about the positions of the members of the next Congress.”>>
For a more detailed view of this situation, I also recommend the article Drug Industry Is on Defensive as Power Shifts by Robert Pear, which you can read at: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/1124-03.htm.
Big Pharma’s bid to maintain its favorable status within Congress is no surprise. Nor is it likely that the pharmaceutical companies will overall be unsuccessful in their machinations. Despite all the talk by Democrats of the need to bring a new level of ethics to DC, due to the fact that the current Congress ranks as one of the most corrupt and unethical of all time, the reality is that mon.ey is what talks the loudest in DC, and Big Pharma spares no expense in going after what it wants. Even so, given that the majority of Americans clearly sent a signal of dissatisfaction with the way things stand in Washington, perhaps the time is ripe for meaningful, positive change that even our elected officials can no longer ignore. We shall see.
Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Managing Blood Clots
Blood clots, also known as thrombi, are formed inside major blood vessels, and are the major cause of many heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular disorders. Symptoms of blood clots are usually not apparent, which is why diagnostic screening on a regular (yearly) basis is recommended.
What To Consider
Blood solidification, or clotting, usually occurs as a healthy response within minutes after the skin is cut or there is trauma that causes bleeding. A clot helps seal the damage. However, blood clotting can be dangerous when it occurs inside healthy blood vessels. Unhealthy clotting can occur from platelets that get “activated” to clump together. This occurs when platelets come in contact with damaged arterial walls, or due to nutrient deficiencies, poor dietary habits, or genetic predisposition. Once platelets get sticky, their shape changes and they easily mesh or clump together, causing a clot.
Another factor that can cause unhealthy blood clots is the production of fibrin, which helps bind the clump of platelets together. Fibrin is the end product of a cascade of coagulation (clumping) factors that occurs with the activation of just one molecule. This, in turn, can lead to the explosion of up to 30,000 molecules of fibrin at the site of injury on the arterial wall.
Factors that can cause a buildup of platelet stickiness and fibrin include: the use of birth control pills, late stages of pregnancy, nutrient deficiencies, smo.king, fr.ee radicals (inadequate antioxidant nutrients), a high-cholesterol diet, low essential fatty acids, a diet high in saturated fat and low in vegetables and fish, and liver disease. Prolonged sitting on long airline flights, especially in cramped conditions, can also increase the risk of developing pulmonary thrombosis. Blood clots forming in the legs or another part of the body break loose and then block one of the arteries to the lungs. Some practical preventive measures during long flights include getting up and walking the aisle every hour, wearing loose, comfortable clothing, periodically stretching the legs and tightening and loosening the muscles of the abdomen and buttocks, and taking some slow, deep breaths.
Studies conducted at Duke Univ.ersity showed that moderate exercise can help protect against heart attacks and strokes by enhancing the body’s natural mechanism for dissolving blood clots. In addition, Duke researchers found that the higher risk of blood clotting in women taking oral contraceptives can be significantly reduced by exercise.
Note: If you take aspirin as a daily preventive therapy, you may want to begin a gut rejuvenation program to stimulate healing and proper gastrointestinal wall functioning, in order to offset aspirin’s traumatization of the gut wall when taken on daily basis. It is a good idea to do a bowel cleanse and rejuvenation several times a year when on daily aspirin (consult your physician for guidance).
Self-Care
Diet: Foods that act to decrease platelet stickiness and fibrin formation include garlic, ginger, onions, and hot peppers (capsicum), all of which protect against heart attack and stroke. Use granulated garlic on food as a regular spice. Fish oils also help to reduce clotting of blood. Increase consumption of cold-water fish at least three times per week. Also decrease sugar consumption as sugar intake increases platelet stickiness.
Nutritional Supplements: Research in Japan has shown that nattokinase, an enzyme derived from soy, can dissolve blood clots in as little as two hours, making it one of the most effective nutrients for preventing and reversing blood clots.
Other useful nutrients include: vitamin B6, garlic capsules, niacin (vitamin B3), lipotropic factors (nutrients useful for liver metabolism of fat), omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, bromelain, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, manganese, and zinc.
Herbs: Hawthorne berry is a very useful herb for helping to prevent blood clots.
Homeopathy: Hamamelis.
Juice Therapy: Combine the juices of garlic, carrot, parsley, spinach, celery, and beet and drink 8-12 ounces daily.

Facts About the Recent Resveratrol Studies by June Russell
Resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine, is given cre.dit for the improvement of health. However, translating this into health benefits when drinking wine is unscientific as the presence of alcohol hastens the breakdown of antioxidants in the blood, speeding their elimination from the body (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition - January 2000).
According to Curtis Ellison, M.D. (Boston Univer.sity School of Medicine - 2006) and Ira Goldberg, M.D. (in the New England Journal of Medicine editorial - 2002), there have been no randomized clinical trials that confirm alcohol/wine’s health benefits, there have been only ‘associations.’ According to Dr. Goldberg, this positive data are similar to what was had for estrogen and vitamin E, two interventions that when tested in the most rigorous way turned out not to be beneficial. Alcohol interferes with the metabolism of most vitamins, and with the absorption of many nutrients (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “Alcohol Alert,” October 1993).
This recent resveratrol study, led by Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School, states that resveratrol works by spurring activity and regrowth in cells’ mitochondria, ‘the energy powerhouses of the cell’. However, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (September 2004) states that alcohol may damage the liver cells’ mitochondria, and when this happens fat is not processed properly.
N.o.w for the ‘reality check’ - facts often omitted in the media taken from this same study. To get the equivalent beneficial doses of resveratrol used in this study Sinclair warned that “you would have to drink over a thousand glasses of wine a day.” Also, no one has shown that these doses of resveratrol used in the study are either safe or effective, and supplements are not well absorbed. How about more news encouraging healthy lifestyles to get the same benefits without the risks, such as a diet full of fruits and vegetables, exercise, meditation, etc.?

Life Beyond 100: Secrets of the Fountain of Youth by C. Norman Shealy. I consider Dr. Shealy to be one of the most innovative and pioneering physicians and researchers in the entire field of holistic and alternative medicine. The list of his accomplishments are too numerous to mention he.re, so suffice it to say that when I became aware of Norm’s latest book, I was very interested in reading it. I’m glad I have, for it confirms much of what I believe about the human lifespan. As Norm makes abundantly clear in this book, all of us have the potential to live long and healthy lives far in excess of 100 years. Based on his years of exploring this subject, Norm posits that living healthily to 150 years or more is well with our reach, and in Life Beyond 100 he shares a wealth of information and self-care tools we can use to achieve that goal, much of which is not available from other sources since it is based directly on Norm’s own medical and scientific research and experimentation. And the information he shares isn’t limited to longevity, but for anyone interested in dramatically improving their health he.re and n.o.w. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.
Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer. This fifth installment of the Artemis Fowl series finds the n.o.w reformed criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl in a race to prevent humans from discovering the existence of fairies due to an unraveling time spell that is about to deposit the 8th race of fairies back on earth. Once again Colfer combines wit, humor, and imagination to create a thoroughly enjoyable adventure tale for the kid in all of us.
