New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week, in remembrance of my sister Andrea’s passing three years ago due to cancer, I’m sharing a short article I wrote that explores the limitations of conventional cancer treatments. You’ll also find an article on the wisdom and power of the bodymind by Deepak Chopra, and self-care tips for dealing with stomachaches, a common concern among parents of yo.ung children.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

The Limitations of Conventional Cancer Treatments

In order to understand why an increasing number of cancer patients and physicians are turning to alternative methods of cancer treatment, prevention, and detection, it’s important to also understand the failings of conventional cancer care. Conventional medicine’s approach for treating cancer is sometimes referred to as “cut, poison, and burn,” since the primary conventional cancer treatments are surgery (cut), chemotherapy (poison), and radiation (burn). While all of these methods can at times result in successful long-term outcomes when used to treat cancer, overall their success rate is abysmal. The reasons for such failure are not difficult to comprehend, yet the cancer establishment, especially the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society (ACS)—both of which have long dominated the discussion of cancer in the United States—continue to refuse to adequately consider them. This refusal by the cancer establishment to properly investigate and support viable alternative methods for treating cancer seems almost criminal, given the hundreds of billions of dollars that have been spent in the U.S. on cancer research (the vast majority of it coming from our nation’s taxpayers) since President Nixon officially declared “the war on cancer” 35 years ago, when cancer only affected one in ten U.S. citizens, compared to today, when cancer strikes nearly 50 percent of the population.

The primary reasons that the so-called “war on cancer” continues to be such an abject failure are clear.

1)      The cancer establishment still continues to devote too little time educating people about how to effectively prevent cancer.

2)      Both the NCI and the ACS have a long history of actively suppressing and attacking viable alternative treatments.

3)      Conventional cancer care largely ignores the underlying causes that are involved in the development and progression of cancer, choosing to instead concern itself with attacking tumors. This is little more than symptom care, since eradicating tumors is not enough to achieve long-term remission. Effective cancer solutions can only be achieved by addressing and treating the underlying causes so that cancer does not recur.

4)      Each of the primary cancer treatment options are fraught with a high degree of risk and can cause serious, life-threatening side effects. This is especially true regarding how chemotherapy is typically used by oncologists, since many of the chemicals that make up chemotherapy drugs are themselves highly toxic and have been shown to be carcinogenic, as has radiation.

A number of researchers who have investigated the conventional cancer industry suspect that there is a deeper and more insidious reason why the “war on cancer” shows little signs of ever being won. The reason, they state, is that the current system of cancer treatment, much like conventional medicine in general, generates incre.dible revenues each and every year. What incentive, then, does the cancer establishment have for putting itself out of business by find the cure for cancer we’ve been promised for so long?

What follows is an overview of the risks and shortcomings inherent to each of the cancer establishment’s primary treatment options.

Chemotherapy—Chemotherapy is widely used by oncologists to treat cancer despite findings by researchers such as John Cairns, MD, of Harvard University’s School of Public Health, who points out that a mere 2 to 3 percent of the nearly 600,000 people who die in the United States each year because of cancer actually derive any meaningful benefit from chemotherapy treatments. Other researchers have found that the effectiveness of chemotherapy declines over time, and that by the third course of treatment, harmful side effects begin outweigh any benefits that chemotherapy may provide. The longer chemotherapy is administered, the more prevalent these side effects are, beginning with fatigue, hair loss, loss of appetite, and nausea, and progressing to impaired immune function, unhealthy wei.ght loss, and an increased risk (by as much as 600 percent, according to research published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute) of developing other types of cancer, including cancer of the bone, joints, and soft tissue.

Overall, chemotherapy as administered conventionally has little benefit for most forms of cancer characterized by solid tumor masses once such cancers have metastasized (stage 3 and stage 4 cancers). And even for cancers where chemotherapy does have a high rate of success, such as childhood cancers, leukemia. and Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, research shows that it can increase the risk of other forms of cancer developing later on in life. For example, research has found that Hodgin’s lymphoma patients who receive chemotherapy have a 1400 percent greater risk of developing leukemia, while children who receive chemotherapy have a 600 percent greater likelihood of developing cancer of the brain, breast, or thyroid gland once they enter into adulthood.

While holistic and alternative physicians who treat cancer are not opposed to the use of chemotherapy when the situation calls for it, they stress that the way that chemotherapy is used by most conventional oncologists has a high risk of doing more harm than good. For this reason, alternative and holistic physicians seek to first test the effectiveness of potential chemotherapy drugs using innovative tests such as the BioFocus Blood Test and the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay, which are capable of determining whether or not chemotherapy will work (and, if so, which specific type of chemotherapy and in what dosage range) for each individual cancer patient. In addition, by incorporating chemotherapy treatments with natural alternative treatments, they are usually able to achieve much better results statistically using lower doses of chemotherapy, thereby sparing their patients of most, if not all, of the side effects commonly associated with chemo. More importantly, they also reduce the risk of a recurrence of cancer due to a ravaged immune system, which often results from conventional cancer care.

Radiation—Radiation, while usually better tolerated by patients compared to conventional chemotherapy treatments, is also fraught with various health risks and side effects. Common side effects of radiation treatments include painful sores developing on various parts of the body (including inside the mouth and throat and on genitalia), diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems, birth defects, and reproductive problems. Like chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments also increase the risk of additional types of cancer developing later on in life, especially leukemia and cancer of the respiratory tract. Among women, radiation treatments also increase the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer by approximately 250 percent.

Surgery—The use of surgery to treat cancer (by the removal of cancer tumors) originated because physicians once believed that cancer tumors represented localized imbalances in the body that, once they were surgically removed, would prevent cancer from spreading. Cancer experts today know that this theory is inaccurate. While surgery to remove cancerous tumors can in many cases prove to be beneficial, it can also greatly increase the risk of cancer cells breaking off from the tumor to spread to other areas of the body, where they can continue to grow undetected. Moreover, surgery, like chemotherapy and radiation, does nothing to address the underlying causes of cancer and thus accomplishes nothing in terms of preventing cancer from recurring. In addition, in many cases, cancer has already spread to other areas by time tumors are detected by conventional diagnostic techniques, meaning that surgery, by itself, is not enough to remove cancer from the body.

The Mind-Body Bridge by Deepak Chopra

There was general rejoicing last week when Wal-Mart announced that it was reducing the price of 150 generic drugs to as little as $4 a month, a move quickly followed by Target and K-mart. Forecasters in the drug industry predict that this move will pressure other huge retailers to lower their prices and expand the range to 400 generics or more.

Good news all around.

Yet beneath the surface lies the fact that the average senior in America is taking 7 prescription drugs. That's not a step in the right direction, no matter how cheap the price. The field of mind-body medicine has reached the stage where we know a great deal about preventing disease through means far less toxic than prescription drugs. This knowledge isn't being taken advantage of nearly as much as it should be.

American medicine should be helping people build a mind-body bridge. The human body contains enormous wisdom, and we could be tapping into it. For example:

Meditation and stress management are effective in reducing blood pressure.

Meditation also reduces pain as well as how often people get sick.

Psychotherapy has prolonged survival rates in studies of late-stage breast-cancer victims.

Psychiatry has been shown through MRIs to alter and improve the same areas of the brain that respond to psychotropic drugs like Prozac.

Cognitive therapies have restored brain function lost to senile dementia.

Stroke victims and patients with muscular dystrophy have been shown to make amazing gains in restoring lost function through guided exercise therapies.

Mental techniques as simple as post-hypnotic suggestion have been successful in wei.ght loss.

Chronic back pain has been shown to respond to exercise, often better than to surgery.

Taking all this into account, an old person with high blood pressure, an aching back, moderate memory loss, and a potbelly could remedy all these conditions without taking a single drug. Shouldn't that be our goal?

I mention exercise as part of restoring the body's wisdom because it stimulates what the body naturally wants to do--remain strong and balanced. Yet how many physicians even consider such therapies? Far too few. This is particularly egregious in the case of older patients, who are routinely sent home on medicines for hypertension and elevated cholesterol that simply aren't necessary. We need more research to follow up initial findings that the elderly are not helped by attempting to give them the blood pressure and cholesterol readings of 25-year-olds or even 45-year-olds.

The sad fact today, as twenty years ago, is that the average physician remains a pill pusher, giving little thought to the enormous benefits of prevention. Since prevention is largely a lifestyle issue, and changing your lifestyle involves the mind, it can be rightly said that America's biggest health challenge is to keep the mind-body bridge strong. Every report indicates that we aren't doing that. Prevention, the watchword of the Eighties, has given way to a growing reliance on drugs that isn't healthy in the long run, or ever.

Self-Care Tips for Dealing with Stomachaches

Stomachaches are a very common childhood condition. In the vast majority of cases (up to 90 percent) stomachaches are not serious and not caused by an actual disease process.

Caution: However, in cases of stomach pain accompanied by other symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, sudden wei.ght loss or wei.ght gain, fever, blood in the stools, or pain during urination, immediate medical attention is advised. In addition, not all stomach pain is due to problems in the stomach itself. In some cases, stomachaches can be a symptom of referred pain stemming from illness or functional problems elsewhere in the body. People suffering from chronic stomach pain should also seek prompt medical attention.

Symptoms of Stomachache
The primary symptoms associated with stomachaches are mild to moderate pain in the stomach and/or abdominal area, as well as a sensation of “heaviness” in the stomach. In some cases, flatulence may also occur.

Causes of Stomachaches
Most cases of stomachaches are caused by poor diet, over-eating, eating too quickly, food allergies, and/or food poisoning. In many children, emotional upsets can also cause stomachaches.

In some cases, stomachaches can also be due to respiratory conditions, such as asthma or bronchitis. In such cases, the problem is often due to swallowing phlegm or mucus associated with the respiratory condition. Hiatal hernia can also contribute to stomach pain.

Self-Care

Ayurveda:
A tablespoon of anise or fennel tea taken every hour can often improve symptoms. The Ayurvedic herb asafetida can also be helpful.

Diet: Eat lightly, emphasizing small meals of organic vegetables, soups, and broths. Also be sure to drink plenty of pure, filtered water throughout the day. Organic meats and poultry can also be eaten, as can wild-caught fish.

Avoid all sugars, refined carbohydrates, sodas, processed foods, preservatives, artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame), corn syrup, alcohol, white bread and white flour products, pastries, and hydrogenated and trans-fatty oils. Also avoid milk and dairy products, and wheat, and eliminate all foods that may cause you to suffer allergies.

Herbs: Useful herbs for treating stomachaches include anise, chamomile, lemon bar, and peppermint, taken as either teas or infusions. For stomachaches associated with diarrhea, meadowsweet is advised.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies for stomachaches include Chamomilla, Colocynthis, Magnesium phos., and Nux vomica.

Nutritional Supplements: Digestive enzymes and probiotic formulas such as acidophilus can help soothe discomfort and prevent a return of symptoms. Charcoal tablets can also be helpful, especially for stomachaches associated with flatulence.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Gently massaging the webbed area between the thumb and index finger, followed by a massage of the abdomen and spine can usually quickly relief symptoms.

http://www3.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0610/feature4/index.html - At this site you can read the startling findings of a National Geographic writer who was shocked to discover how many toxic chemicals were stored in his body. As my friend Dr. Garry Gordon has been teaching for many years, all of us suffer from similar toxic residues stored in our cells and tissues. What’s unfortunate about the article is how the writer’s doctor and a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) make light of the findings, leaving him with the false impression that he needn’t worry. http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0922-23.htm - Last issue, I provided a link to an article by Dr. Matthias Rath which called into question the philanthropic reasons commonly assumed to be behind the Bill and Melinda Gates’s Foundation’s push to support drug-based health care initiatives. A few days later, I came across this analysis, which states that the Gates have n.o.w teamed up with the Rockefeller Foundation for another so-called humanitarian mission. This news really raised my suspicions, given the fact that the Rockefeller Foundation was one of the principal fronts through which Big Pharma gained control of our nation’s medical schools, replacing a curriculum that once featured training in diet, nutrition, herbology, homeopathy, bodywork, and other natural healing methods, with today’s medical school training, which almost exclusively emphasizes symptom care with the use of drugs and surgery. The Rockefeller Foundation was also the principal architect of the mainstream cancer establishment. The article linked to above does not explore whether there is something nefarious about both foundations joining their efforts, but it does make clear that those efforts will not work. Still, I suspect they will prove very profit/able for both parties.
