New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. In this issue I’m continuing my coverage of the ongoing attack on holistic medicine by the medical establishment in collusion with state and federal regulatory agencies. As you become more aware of how pervasive and insidious this trend is, I hope you will contact the various organizations listed in the Medical Freedom section below and get involved in helping to safeguard our right to choose the health care options we want and believe in. You’ll also find self care tips for dealing with hiatal hernia, a condition that is becoming increasingly common.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

“The aim of medicine is to prevent disease and prolong life, the ideal of medicine is to eliminate the need for a physician.”

--William J. Mayo (1861 – 1939), American surgeon and co-founder of the Mayo Clinic

Fast Fact

70 percent of the body’s immune system is located within the gastrointestinal tract.

More On The Medical Gestapo

I begin this section with an article by Doug Casey, best known as a financial analyst, but also someone who keeps an eye on the excesses of modern medicine. It originally appeared in Doug’s excellent and fr.ee online newsletter What We Now Know, which is available at
http://www.caseyresearch.com/publications.php. Following Doug’s article is a bit of news regarding attempts by the state of Washington to impede the ability of holistic physicians to practice there. But first, here’s Doug. Pay attention to the statistics he shares about chemotherapy and radiation.

<<
The Chemotherapy Mafia

On July 20, 1995, the Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission raided the office of Glenn Warner, MD, an oncologist with unusual views on healing, and revoked his medical license. Allegedly, Warner had cured more than 1,000 patients from terminal cancer—not with chemotherapy and radiation but with diet and exercise regimens, certain immunotherapeutic drugs, and other holistic methods. When he appealed his case in court, the commission’s attorney, Beverly Goetz, argued that cancer patients were “incapable” and “unqualified” to decide whether they received quality care or not. Only experts—like the members of said commission—were capable of making that judgment call, she said.

Unfortunately, this standpoint seems to prevail in the United States these days. Self-determination takes a backseat in favor of state-mandated “health care.” A fact that becomes eerily obvious in cancer cases where minors are involved.

But first, we should ask how valuable chemotherapy really is. There is no doubt that cancer is big business in the U.S. While in 1990, $3.53 billion was spent on chemotherapy, the number more than doubled to $7.51 billion only four years later. By 2009, so the latest projections, cancer therapy products and services will rake in over $27 billion.

As the unfortunate Glenn Warner put it: “We have a multi-billion-dollar industry that is killing people, right and left, just for financial gain. Their idea of research is to see whether two doses of this poison is better than three doses of that poison.”

Other experts agree.

Alan C. Nixon, PhD, former president of the American Chemical Society, states, “As a chemist trained to interpret data, it is incomprehensible to me that physicians can ignore the clear evidence that chemotherapy does much, much more harm than good.”

Alan Levin, MD, of the Univ/ersity of California Medical School agrees: “Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon or lung cancers. This fact has been documented for over a decade. Yet doctors still use chemotherapy for these tumors. . . Women with breast cancer are likely to die faster with chemo than without it.”

His opinion is echoed by Ralph Moss, former assistant director of public affairs at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and author of the book The Cancer Industry: “In the end, there is no proof that chemotherapy actually extends life in the vast majority of cases, and this is the great lie about chemotherapy, that somehow there is a correlation between shrinking a tumor and extending the life of a patient.”

Even the General Accounting Office (GAO) found in a 1987 study on the progress of cancer treatment that “For a majority of the cancers we examined, the actual improvements have been small or have been overestimated by the published rates. . . Progress has been made, but not as great as that reported.”

More and more cancer patients and their families are feeling skeptical about the value of chemotherapy and radiation as well. However, not allowed to think for themselves, some states have imposed mandatory treatment.

The first widely published case was that of Katie Wernecke, a 12-year-old Texan who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease in January 2005. After undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy, her cancer went into remission.

The doctors advised subsequent radiation treatment, but father Edward Wernecke had informed himself on the Internet and was taken aback by an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, written by Vincent DeVita, former director of the National Cancer Institute. DeVita stated that radiation “by itself increases the risk of late second solid tumors in the irradiated field and the incidence rises steeply when radiotherapy and chemotherapy are combined.” Other mentioned side effects were stunted growth, sterilization, and an increased risk of breast cancer.

Worried about the harmful long-term effects, Katie’s parents decided to forego the radiation and follow up with holistic therapies. When Michelle Wernecke took her child out of the hospital despite protests of the oncologists, the Texas State Department of Child Protective Services issued an Amber Alert. The mother was arrested and sent to jail for kidnapping. Katie was put into foster care, along with her three brothers who were later released.

At a court hearing in June, a radiologist asserted that Katie’s cancer had returned and that she needed to undergo treatment again. Even though Katie said in a video statement that she was not willing to undergo radiation, she was ordered by the courts to do so. What’s more, convinced that the Werneckes negatively affected her decisions, CPS cut off all communication with their daug/hter. Left to her own devices, the 12-year-old decided to make the choice herself, resisting treatment by pulling catheters out of her arm and disobeying doctors’ orders.

After a ten-month ordeal, at the end of October 2005, a district judge ruled that Katie could rejoin her family and seek alternative treatment out of state. “On June 11th, Katie celebrated her 14th birthday at home with family and friends,” her father writes in his blog. “Katie is doing very well. . . but she is not cancer-free yet, so there is still a battle to w.i.n. She is in better physical condition than ever.” A happy ending?

Recently, another story broke the news: The case of Virginian teenager Starchild Abraham Cherrix. The 16-year-old, diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease last summer, had undergone three months of chemotherapy that, in his own words, left him weak and nauseated. When the doctors told him in February that the cancer was back, he refused more chemotherapy.

“I think it would kill me the second time,” said Abraham, who instead opted for a sugar-free, organic diet and her/bal treatments at a clinic in Mexico. He.re, too, Child Protective Services and the courts became involved, and a six-month-long battle began. In May, a judge ruled that Abraham’s parents were guilty of neglect for supporting their son’s decision; he also ordered shared custody between the parents and the Accomack County Department of Social Services, with the possibility of the Cherrix’ losing custody entirely.

Yet Abraham refused to comply with court orders, cheered on by supporters of holistic medicine: "I think it's my body. I can choose what's best for my body. If I don't have the right to do that, then I don't have any rights at all anyway."

At the Cherrix’ request, a second judge stayed the first court order until trial, scheduled to begin on August 16.>>

Sadly, the cases that Doug Casey cites above are not the only ones that have occurred. I am aware of others, as well. In some cases, due directly to the meddling of state and federal agencies, including the FDA, parents who were prevented from taking their children to receive viable alternative cancer treatments were forced to endure the pain and suffering of watching their children die as they received court-mandated chemotherapy and radiation that served only to hasten their deaths.

Another tack of the medial Gestapo is to target doctors who are successfully treating various diseases using safe and non-toxic alternative treatments that do not rely on drugs and surgery. One of the most famous of these cases occurred in the state of Washington in the early 1990s, when Dr. Jonathan Wright, one of the world’s foremost experts in the use of nutritional supplements to treat chronic illness (Jonathan is also an acclaimed expert in many other therapies, as well). Because Jonathan is widely respected by both conventional and holistic physicians alike, and is sought after by them to share his insights, the FDA decided to attack him. To that end, they contacted the local sheriff’s department in the county of Jonathan’s medical practice, informing the sheriff that Jonathan was engaged in illegal drug dealing. Alarmed by this news, the sheriff ordered SWAT team, wearing full body armor and with their guns drawn, to raid Jonathan’s office. Bursting through the doors, they found Jonathan’s female assistants and yelled at them to get down on the floor, where they were kept at gunpoint while other members of the SWAT team absconded with Jonathan’s computers, patient files, and medical records.

But the FDA’s ploy quickly backfired. Almost immediately, there was a groundswell of protests staged by Jonathan’s patients, the majority of whom were middle-aged or elderly. Then it was learned that the “illegal drug” Jonathan was charged by the FDA with using was vitamin B12 manufactured in Germany. (Jonathan’s screening of his patients often revealed vitamin B12 deficiencies, which he corrected with a short course of vitamin B12 injections. He used the German brand simply because he found it to be of a higher quality than any brand made in the United States, and therefore less apt to provoke an allergic reaction.) Once the facts came out, the sheriff who’d ordered the raid publicly stated that the FDA had lied to him and that he would ne/ver cooperate with them again. No charges were ever brought against Jonathan, yet he was forced to go to court in order to have all that was taken from his office returned to him. The court case was lengthy and extremely expensive, but once it finally got before a judge, it was quickly resolved in Jonathan’s favor. The end result was a big black eye for the FDA.

Given these facts, one would imagine that the state of Washington would today be far less inclined to attack physicians who practice there simply because they practice holistic medicine. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. And thanks to one of my readers, whose father is one of Dr. Wright’s patients, I’ve learned that Jonathan is once again doing what he can to stop this abuse of power. To learn more about this issue, please visit Jonathan’s website and read the articles he has written about this, which are available at:
http://www.tahoma-clinic.com/legal.shtml. And for my readers who reside in the state of Washington, I urge you to contact your elected officials to protest these machinations.

Self-Care Tips for Dealing With Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia is a condition caused when the area where the stomach and esophagus (the opening of the diaphragm) is stretched. This causes the upper part of the stomach to push up into the chest cavity. As a consequence, the esophageal sphincter, which normally acts as a one-way valve to allow food to travel down into the stomach, is unable to prevent the contents of the stomach, including gastric acids, from traveling upward.

Although most people with hiatal hernia experience no symptoms, when symptoms do occur, they primarily manifest as chest pain or heartburn, which can be made worse by bending over, especially after eating, or exacerbated at night or when lying down. The people most prone to hiatal hernia are smokers and people who are overweight

What To Consider

Hiatal hernia can sometimes cause material from the stomach to pushed up into the esophagus. This is called esophageal reflux and can cause the heartburn. The pain of hiatal hernia can also mimic other health problems such as stomach ulcers or heart attacks.

Hiatal hernia is often due to chronic, extreme tension in the psoas and quadratus lumborum, two large muscles that merge with the diaphragm, causing the diaphragm to become chronically stressed. Osteopathic manipulation can help normalize these muscles.

Self-Care

Diet:
Avoid overeating and minimize your intake of spicy foods, fried foods, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, citrus juices, alcohol, whipped cream, milk shakes, peppermint, green and red peppers, and onion, all of which can worsen symptoms. Also avoid eating large meals and then lying down or bending over, and do not drink too much during and after meals. While your condition exists, it is best to eat small meals throughout the day, rather than the typical three meal plan.

Nutritional Supplementation: The digestive enzymes pancreatin and hydrochloric acid can help relieve symptpms, as can aloe vera juice. Vitamin B complex and a multivitamin/mineral formula can also help.

Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises can help to strengthen the muscles of the diaphragm and expand the lungs. This is important since many people with hiatal hernia have restricted breathing patterns and have a habit of swallowing air more frequently than normal. This causes the excessive air to enter the stomach, stressing the diaphragmatic opening through which the esophagus passes, and exacerbating hiatal hernia symptoms. Conscious, deep breathing exercises can help slow down the rate of swallowing to more normal levels.

Exercise and Lifestyle: Sit in an armchair, inhale, and then and hold your breath as you lift your legs up toward your chest. Lower your legs and then exhale. Repeat this exercise several times per session, and do it several times a day.

If your symptoms include shortness of breath or food becoming lodged in your esophagus, drink 16 ounces of pure filtered water and bounce on your heels for 10-20 times.

When you sleep, be sure that your upper body is in an elevated position so that your chest cavity is above your stomach. This will prevent your stomach from rising into your chest cavity.

Herbs: To reduce the inflammation and symptoms of acid reflux caused by hiatal hernia, make an infusion of equal parts comfrey root, marshmallow root, and meadowsweet and drink throughout the day and before going to sleep.

Homeopathy: Calc carb., Hepar sulph., and Ferrum phos. can help relieve symptoms.

Hydrotherapy: Contrast application (hot and cold water packs applied to the abdomen) will help ease the stressed muscles that can cause hiatal hernia.

Professional Care

If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating hiatal hernia: Applied Kinesiology, Biofeedback Training, Bodywork, Chiropractic, Detoxifcation Therapy,  Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Osteopathy, Reflexology, and  Traditional Chinese Medicine.
