New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. In this issue I comment on the Gestapo-like tactics currently taking place in Virginia that are intended to force a teenager to receive toxic chemotherapy treatments against his will. The outcome of this case could have widespread implications for all of us living in the United States. You’ll also find an overview of early warning signs and symptoms that can be indications of cancer, as well as self-care tips for dealing with muscle cramps.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

“I have ne.ver wished to cater to the crowd; for what I know they do not approve, and what they approve I do not know.”

--Epicurus (341 BC – 271 BC), Greek philosopher

Fast Fact

“Fluoride is a corrosive poison which will produce harm on a long-term basis.”

(This statement was made by Dr. Charles Heyd, past president of the American Medical Association, who warned that people should not drink fluoridated water.)

Protect Yourself From Energy Pollution With the BioElectric ShieldTM.
Energy pollution is all around us in the fo/rm of harmful electromagnetic frequencies and radiation (EMFs and EMR) emitted by power lines, cells phones, computers, and many other so-called modern conveniences. By wearing the BioElectric Shield pendant, you can protect yourself from the harmful effects of EMFs and EMR. To obtain a BioElectricShield, visit http://www.mcssl.com/app/aftrack.asp?afid=408491. To learn more about how and why the BioElectric Shield works, see my article about it at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ezine/vol4no9.cfm.

The Medical Gestapo Strikes Again

Imagine this scenario. You’re a bright, active teenager who has taken responsibility for your life and learned to trust yourself when it comes to making decisions. Then you are diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. Since the American Cancer Society states that 85 percent of Hodgkin’s patients are alive five years after their diagnosis following conventional cancer treatment, you and your parents decide to pursue it. But the ensuring chemotherapy and radiation treatments left you racked with fevers and nausea, and made you so weak that at times you could not stand or walk by yourself, leaving your father to have to carry you. Ravaged in body and spirit, you realize there has to be a better way and you make up your mind to search for it. Since you live in Virginia, you contact the Association for Research and Enlightenment, where you learn of a safe, non-toxic healing method reputed to be successful for many types of cancer, including Hodgkin’s disease. After research further, you decide this is the therapy you want to pursue. Since it is not available in the U.S., you and your parents go to a clinic in Mexico where it is offered. Soon thereafter, you notice your health starting to improve, even though your cancer is still present. But then a social worker—a person with no medical training and who is certainly not an expert on cancer—reports you and your parents to the Virginia authorities. Whereupon a court finds your parents in neglect and orders you to continue chemotherapy treatments despite your wishes.

Sadly, the above is not fiction. Rather, it is the latest in a long list of cases in which state or federal authorities have meddled in the rights of families to choose their own course of medical treatment and make their own decisions. In this instance, the case in question involves Abraham Cherrix, a 16 year-old teenager who was ordered by Judge Jesse E. Demps to resume chemotherapy and radiation treatments against his will and that of his parents. As if that was not enough, Demps, after finding Mr. And Mrs. Cherrix to be neglectful for allowing their son to pursue alternative treatment, also required them to continue sharing custody of Abraham with the County Department of Social Services of the Virginia country in which they live. Rather than submit, the Cherrix family is appealing the judge’s ruling, and, as I write this, it is being reported that Abraham’s parents have been awarded sole custody of their son while they appeal Demps' decision.

Commenting on his situation, Abraham said, “This is my body that I'm supposed to take care of. I should have the right to tell someone what I want to do with this body. I studied. I did research. I came to this conclusion that the chemotherapy was not the route I wanted to take.” He also added that additional chemotherapy “would kill me, literally. No joke about it. The first round of chemo almost killed me in itself. There were some nights I didn't know if I would make it.”

But whether Abraham will be able to continue the course of treatment he prefers remains to be seen.

So much for living in the “land of the free.”

What have we come to as a nation when parents no longer have the right to choose what they think is best for their children? What does it say about our state and federal governments when they maliciously persecute and prosecute doctors for successfully treating cancer and other serious health conditions using non-toxic, non-conventional methods? How much longer will we allow such abuses of power to continue? The longer we stay silent, the closer we come to becoming a nation guided completely by fascism. (I’m not resorting to hyperbole. Mussolini defined fascism as government in service to corporate interests. We’re already a good part of the way there, folks.)

Symptoms and Warning Signs of Cancer

Recognizing the symptoms of cancer can help to ensure an early diagnosis. This makes it potentially easier to treat cancer, before it has metastasized. Cancer that is detected early typically has not yet had the oppor.tunity to deplete the body of its disease-fighting resources, and therefore cancer, regardless of what category it belongs, is far more susceptible to safe, nontoxic natural cures.

There are a number of general early warning signs, or initial symptoms, of cancer. If you experience any one of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention so that you can be properly screened for cancer. The most common general early symptoms of cancer are:

Lumps of Thickening in Breast or Testicle Tissues.Since breast and testicular cancer have increasingly shown signs of developing earlier, all men and women above the age of 25 should regularly (at least once a month) examine themselves for telltale signs of cancer of the bre.asts and testicles. By gently yet firmly pressing into the bre.asts, women are often able to detect lumps or thickening breast tissue that can be a sign of breast cancer. In a similar fashion, men can massage their testicles, being on the lookout for any noticeable changes in the way they feel.

Changes in Warts or Moles.
Warts or moles that begin to change appearance can be a sign of various types of skin cancer, such as melanoma or squamous carcinoma. One indication that skin cancer might be developing is bleeding that occurs in warts and moles. Changes in their size is another common indicator. In addition, the appearance of chronic pimples or patches of dry, scaly skin are other warning signs, as is skin that becomes inflamed or ulcerated. Sores that are slow to heal are another indicator, as are chronic sores in the mouth.

Persistent Sore Throat. A chronic sore throat can be a potential indicator that cancer is developing in an area of the throat (esophagus, larynx, or pharynx). Other early warning signs of throat cancer include persistent hoarseness, lumps in the throat, and difficulty swallowing.

Changes in Bowel and Bladder Habits.  Any noticeable and persistent change in your bowel movements or in the way you urinate can be an indication of cancer in the genitourinary tract (bladder, prostate, and testicular cancer) or in the gastrointestinal tract (colon or stomach cancer). Such changes include unexplained constipation or diarrhea, blood in the urine or stool, pain during urination and elimination, difficulty urinating or passing stool, abdominal pain, and stools that are dark and resemble tar.

Coughing Blood/Persistent Coughing. Persistent coughing and coughing up of blood can be signs of lung cancer, as well as other types of cancer, especially in people who smoke.

Chronic Digestion Problems.
The following digestive symptoms can all be indications of cancer: abdominal pain, bloating of the stomach or abdomen, chronic heartburn or indigestion, nausea, and loss of appetite. Chronic flatulence is another potential early warning sign, as is a persistent “growling” stomach.

Unexplained Wei.ght Loss.
Any sudden and unexplained loss of wei.ght should immediately be brought to the attention of your doctor.

Persistent Fatigue and Feelings of Exhaustion.
Ongoing loss of energy or chronic fatigue can be signs that cancer is present and beginning to spread.

Abnormal Vaginal Discharges and/or Bleeding.
These signs can be indications of cervical, ovarian, or vaginal cancer.

Other Telltale Warning Signs of Specific Types of Cancers

In addition to the general early warning symptoms mentioned above, specific types of cancers usually result in specific symptoms. What follows is a list of some of the most common cancer and the symptoms that most commonly accompany them.

Breast Cancer Symptoms: lumps in the breast and/or thickening breast tissue, nipple discharge, retraction of the nipple, dimpling of breast tissue, reddened breast skin tissue, swollen bre.asts, sensation of heat in the bre.asts, swelling in the lymph nodes beneath the armpits.

Colon and Rectal Cancer Symptoms: blood in the stools, bleeding from the rectum, dark and tarry stools, abdominal pains and cramping, unexplained constipation or diarrhea, alternating constipation and diarrhea, unexplained wei.ght loss, loss of appetite, unexplained fatigue, poor skin pallor.

Kidney Cancer Symptoms: Blood in the urine, dull aches or pains in the lower back or on the sides of the abdomen, lumps or swelling in the kidney area of the abdomen or lower back, unexplained elevations in blood pressure levels, unexplained abnormalities in red blood cell count.

Leukemia Symptoms: Unexplained weakness or fatigue, pale skin, unexplained fever, flu-like symptoms, prolonged bleeding, unexplained bruising, enlarged lymph nodes, swollen spleen and/or liver, frequent infections, unexplained bone or joint pain, unexplained wei.ght loss, night sweats.

Lung Cancer Symptoms: persistent coughing or wheezing, persistent chest pain, persistent lung congestion, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, blood produced upon coughing.

Melanoma (Skin Cancer) Symptoms: changes in skin tone and texture; changes in the size, shape, and/or color of moles; unexplained bleeding from the skin.

Self-Care Tips for Dealing With Muscle Cramps

Muscles cramps are caused by chronic contraction or abnormal toning of the muscles, of which there are three types: skeletal, smooth, and heart. Symptoms of muscle cramps include tightness in the muscle, pain, and/or tingling and burning in the affected area.

Everyone experiences muscle cramping at some time, but those who are most prone to it tend to live a sedentary lifestyle, do not exercise regularly, lack magnesium-rich foods in their diet (especially green vegetables) and/or eat an excess of foods that reduce calcium, such as animal foods, grains, soda, beverages containing caffeine, refined sugars, and processed foods high in phosphates.

What To Consider

Muscle cramps can be due to lack of exercise; low thyroid function; deficiencies in iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin E, and/or folic acid; dietary imbalances; food allergies; excessive coffee consumption; poor posture; spinal problems; uncomfortable footwear; past injury; stress; poor circulation; heart problems; general fatigue; diabetes; and/or arthritis. If muscle cramping becomes chronic, all of these factors need to be screened for and, if present, addressed. (Note: Diuretic medications can worsen muscle cramps and spasms because of their tendency to deplete the body of essential minerals, particularly potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and may create worse muscle spasms.)

Self-Care

Diet:
Eat an organic, whole foods diet that is high in calcium-rich and magnesium-rich foods, such as green leafy vegetables, fruits (particularly apricots), organic yogurt, kefir, millet, raw nuts and seeds, and raw organic honey. Minimize your intake of citrus fruits, meats, and grains. Overall, you want your diet to be one that supports alkalinity and minimizes acidity, so you need to make sure each meal of the day is high in fruit or vegetable content. Also eliminate all forms of sugar, coffee and other caffeine drinks, and drink plenty of pure filtered water throughout the day.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following nutrients are very helpful for relieving and preventing muscle cramps: calcium, magnesium, potassium, silica, trace minerals, a multimineral supplement, vitamin B complex, vitamin B1, vitamin B3 (niacin), folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, and chlorophyll.

Muscle cramps, particularly in the calf muscles, can also occur because of a lack of sodium in the body. To prevent this, take a half a teaspoon of organic sea salt or Celtic salt in a glass of water once a day.

Aromatherapy:
Rosemary, lavender, marjoram, chamomile, or clary sage essential oil massaged into the affected area can provide rapid relief of most muscle cramping.

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy Cream applied topically over the affected area can often help.

Herbs: As its name suggests, cramp bark tea is an excellent remedy for preventing and relieving muscle cramps. A tincture of equal parts lobelia and cramp bark can also be applied topically to soothe the affected muscles.

Hydrotherapy: Hot packs, Epsom salt packs or baths, sitz baths, and/or a full, hot baths can hasten recovery from muscle cramps. For nighttime leg cramps, soak in a hot water for 20-30 minutes before going to bed, then stretch your legs.

Juice Therapy: Carrot, beet, celery, and cucumber juice can provide your body with vital nutrients to minimize your risk of cramping.

Topical Treatment: Massage cramping muscles with a mixture of grated ginger juice and equal parts olive or sesame oil. Repeat as needed throughout the day.

Books:
The Healing Power of Neurofeedback by Steven Larsen, Ph.D.
I am thrilled to know that there is finally a comprehensive book written for the lay public about neurofeedback, a topic I discussed at length with Dr. Steven Fahrion in my own book, Health on the Edge: Visionary Views of Healing in the New Millennium. Neurofeedback is a power therapy that stimulates brain-wave activity to quickly and permanently create improved brain functioning, heightened creativity, and greater feelings of emotional well-being. In this book, Dr. Larsen, who has treated patients with LENS for ten years, focuses on a particular type of neurofeedback known as LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System), which, as he documents, has had remarkable success in treating head and brain traumas, as well as anxiety, ADHD, behavioral disorders, chronic depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other health conditions, many of which often fail to respond to conventional drug and surgery approaches. In addition to Dr. Larsen’s own writings, this book also features fascinating contributions by over a dozen other LENS practitioners, and the information they share is nothing less than fascinating. For anyone interested in learning more about one of the most exciting therapies that will certainly be an integral part of “the medicine of the future,” this book is a must-read and I highly recommend it.

The Water Prescription by Christopher Vasey, N.D. When it comes to the importance of water to our overall health, the acknowledged expert was the late Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, author of Your Body’s Many Cries for Water and You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty. I was privileged to know and correspond with Dr. Batman, as he liked to be called, for a number of years before his passing, and given all that he contributed to our understanding of the role that chronic low-grade dehydration plays in many health conditions, I did not expect to find anyone else who could offer information of the subject that would go beyond Dr. Batman’s work. But Dr. Christopher Vasey has proved my assumption to be wrong. In The Water Prescription, Vasey, a leading naturopathic physician in Switzerland, provides new and exciting insights about water and health that adds to Dr. Batman’s own many years of research. There are many reasons to recommend this book. Among them is the information Vasey offers about water and acid-alkaline balance, as well as the many charts he provides about the best sources of drinking water. In addition, you will also find many useful charts that provide information about the mineral content and pH levels of numerous popular brands of bottled water in the U.S. Canada, England, Europe, and many other countries. These charts in and of themselves are a wonderful resource. The most valuable information for me, however, is the chapter devoted to his ten steps for rehydrating the body. Very easy to follow, they yield excellent health benefits, as I can already attest after personally trying them out (doing so left me with noticeably more energy and mental alertness after only a few days of following Vasey’s suggestions). Get this book, read it, and follow Dr. Vasey’s recommendations. Your health will be all the better for doing so.

Reader Feedback

I received a lot of emails from readers this past week in response to what I wrote last issue regarding my intentions to continue covering political issues when they impact our health. All but one of them were solidly in favor of my doing so, and I thank everyone who wrote in. The following letter, written by Cosette T, a cancer survivor, touched me deeply. Since it’s so instructive, in terms of how each of us must take responsibility for our health, I’ve decided to share it.

<<Larry,

Your commentary on how politics affect our health, choices and freedoms in this country could not have been said more eloquently, accurately and informatively.

I must totally disagree with the reader who was offended by the political commentary in your recent newsletter. Any informed individual today would understand how drastically politics affect the quality of our health.  Our freedom to purchase dietary food supplements, our freedom to obtain treatment choices not effected by Big Pharma's vast lobbying machine and it's members' blatant conflict-of-interest F.D.A. board positions, as well as it's conflict-of-interest sponsor positions on medical studies used to formulate current treatment options.  Add to this our right to obtain insur.ance coverage for items other than those that would line the pockets of drug companies and you have a profound effect that politics plays on our health rights.

Any informed individual would also know that the most important literary health works available to us today such as, "The Alternative Medicine's Definitive Guide" books, and other literary works have, almost without exception, one thing in common....and that is a presentation on just how profoundly politics effect the freedoms I speak of.

I am a breast cancer survivor who has benefited incalculably from independent thinking and personal research, which I gleaned in publications such as your newsletter and innumerable other books and publications. This information gave me the wisdom and courage to question the conventional medical thinking in breast cancer treatment, which ultimately gave me a vastly different outcome than most others with breast cancer.

Upon diagnosis, my goal was to reverse my cancer cells before making a treatment decision. I knew I would need conclusive evidence that I actually had cancer if I were successful at reversing it on my own and wanted to make that claim. So, I had biopsies performed, which I insisted be examined in two different hospital laboratories by two unrelated pathologists. Both lab reports confirmed cancer deep within the breast by the chest wall and in the nipple. I then embarked upon a 6-month body and environment cleansing program as well as an intense immune system building program. This was followed by a mastectomy without radiation or chemotherapy...my choice.

You guessed it!  Upon mastectomy, the pathologists (again, two different labs and pathologists) found NO residual cancer deep within my breast and only pre-cancer cells (DCIS) behind the nipple (which many oncologists n.o.w feel often warrants no treatment). Again, I have medical documentation of these findings. My oncologist defined this outcome as, “a miracle or spontaneous remission, which cannot be explained by conventional medical thinking.”

I have used my independent thinking and research as a professional care provider for the profoundly disabled, who often have vastly compromised immune systems and tragic health disorders. For 30 years, I have witnessed and fought the political ramifications on health issues as it relates to staying in control of our own personal health choices. My knowledge and research has often been the difference between life and death for my many clients.

Larry, I find it nearly impossible to convey how tremendously helpful your work on the cancer chapter of the 'Alternative Medicine' book, your newsletter, your referrals to countless other literary works and health professionals have been to me! For someone out there who has just been hit with a cancer diagnosis, I'd be honored that my letter would serve as bit of hope, through your newsletter.

Health and Peace, Cosette>>

As I replied to Cosette, if I needed any further impetus to keep doing what I do, her email surely provided it. As do all the emails I receive from my readers (even when they take me to task). So please continue to let me know what you think of my efforts.
