What’s New
Well, after unprecedented vote buying by the Bush administration via “pork barrel” politics, the U.S. House of Representatives joined the Senate in passing CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement). How that will play out in terms of our health freedoms and national sovereignty remains to be seen. What wasn’t widely reported about the vote is the fact that the U.S. Representatives initially voted down CAFTA, causing House leaders to then held the vote open for 47 minutes until they had changed enough Republican votes to approve the agreement. Typical of politics these days.
As promised last issue, in light of what, to me, is a very disturbing trend to place more and more of our freedoms under the purview of non-elected bureaucrats who are wholly unresponsive to the expressed will of we the people, I am going to start focusing on providing you with information you can use to help maintain your health using tools that so far are not under the ruling elite’s microscope. To that end, in this issue you will find information about the importance of maintaining a healthy pH in your body. I’m also sharing self-care tips for dealing with scoliosis, and debunking the recent widely disseminated “study” that bad-mouths echinacea.
As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Debunking the Recent Echinacea “Study”
Last week, prominently trumpeted throughout the mainstream media, came word that researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine had found that Echinacea, a popular herb/al cold and flu remedy offered no benefits for preventing or alleviating colds. (Some news articles that I read reporting this story editorialized that the mil/lions of dollars annually spent each year on Echinacea supplements was “a waste of money.”) The findings were given further legitimacy by being published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Needless to say, the so-called “study” was accepted at face value and no serious inquiry was made as to how such a finding could suddenly occur after more than 30,000 previously published studies on Echinacea confirmed its improve immune function (thereby strengthening a person’s ability to fend off colds, flu, and other conditions that suppress immune function). Had such an inquiry been made, it would have soon become apparent that the “study” was seriously flawed from its onset. Among the most noticeable flaws are the following:
1) Rather than using commercially available Echinacea extracts, the researchers prepared their own extract. That raises the first question? What expertise do the researchers have in this area? This is a fair question, since the American Botanical Council, a highly-respected nonprofit research organization focused on herb/al research, issued the statement after the “study” was reported stating the Echinacea preparations the researchers used “do not correlate with commercial Echinacea products currently available to consumers.”
2) The dosage used in the “study” was less than a third of normal Echinacea dosages found in commercial Echinacea products and recommended by practitioners of her/bal medicine. Why? Because this lower, less effective dose is the one being recommended by the German government, which is aligned with the German pharmaceutical corporations that are leading the charge in Europe towards significantly reducing the dosage range of both he/rbs and nutritional supplements for sale worldwide (something that has already been done in German and many other European countries; there, higher doses of such supplements can only be obtained with a doctor’s prescription and at much greater cost than what we pay here in the U.S.) Consider for a moment the outcry from Big Pharma if researchers studied a pharmaceutical drug using far less than the recommended dose and then determined the drug didn’t work.
3) All of the subjects in the “study” were college students, which in itself is a serious flaw, since participants are hardly representative of the general population that uses Echinacea supplements and, being so young, typically have healthier immune systems than would a more inclusive, representative study group.
Despite these serious flaws, the “study” was accepted as gospel by the media that reported on it and the end result is that an unsuspecting public, most of whom have little if any awareness of the 30,000-plus studies that support Echinacea’s health benefits, are led to believe that Echinacea is “a waste of money.”
Needless to say, the American Botanical Council’s comments on the study (which are far more diplomatic that my own) did not receive widespread media coverage. (To read the ABC’s full statement, visit http://www.herbalgram.org/default.asp?c=echinacea072605.)
Recently, similar stories were widely spread in the media claiming that vitamin E doesn’t work, either. These stories, which continue to run as I write this, are equally suspect. As I’ve mentioned in past issues of this newsletter, there is a media campaign underway to erode the public’s faith in natural health supplements. According to health freedom advocate Tim Bolen (see http://www.bolenreport.com for daily updates on all matters related to health and health freedom), this campaign is being orchestrated here in the US by a New York PR firm in the pay of Big Pharma. Given the fact that so many mainstream journalists are little more than stenographers these days, complacently repackaging press releases as news without any follow-up research or inquiry, I encourage you to take such media stories with a large grain of salt.

The Importance of pH to Your Health (Part 1)
A balanced pH is one of the most vital factors necessary for achieving and maintaining good health. Too often, however, doctors ignore acid-alkaline balance. This is a mistake, one that can potentially lead to serious health problems for their patients. Is your body in balance; are you too acidic; or are you too alkaline? Let’s begin by learning more about what pH and acid-alkaline balance really mean.
What Is pH?
pH refers to the relative concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, such as blood, urine, and saliva. The term itself was first defined in 1909 by a Danish biochemist named Soren Peter Lauritz Sorenson. Since that time it has been used to measure the acidic, alkaline, or neutral properties of various solutions and compounds. In terms of health, pH is a measurement of the acid-alkaline ratio of the body’s fluids and tissues. When this ratio is balanced, good health results. When it is imbalanced—either too acidic or too alkaline—the body’s internal environment is negatively impacted, setting the stage for disease to take hold.
pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, while values below seven show a greater concentration of positively charged hydrogen ions compared to negatively charged ions. Conversely, a pH value greater than 7 indicates a higher concentration of negatively charged ions. A pH reading below 7 is an indication of acidity, and reading above 7 indicates an alkaline condition.
In order to thrive, your body’s blood chemistry needs to be slightly alkaline. For a state of optimal health to exist, the pH of your blood should be 7.365. When your pH blood reading moves too far below or above this number and remains that way, the inevitable result is that you will become sick. Some people who are chronically ill have a blood pH that is overly alkaline. The majority of people suffering from chronic illness suffer from an unbalanced blood pH that is far too acidic. When this state of over-acidity becomes chronic, a number of serious threats to your health can arise. This occurs because the bloodstream fluidschange to an environment that diminishes the body’s internal oxygen supply and supports disease-producing microorganisms.
Not all parts of the body operate within the same pH range. This is because, as Dr. Arthur Guyton pointed out in his Textbook of Medical Physiology, there are different levels of acidity and alkalinity in which your body’s various organs, tissues, and fluidscan function optimally. For these reactions to be performed as nature intended, a particular pH range is necessary. Small changes in pH levels can profoundly affect the body’s overall function and energy levels.
Both saliva and urine have a wide range of pH values, yet health can still exist as long as these ranges are not exceeded or diminished. Blood pH, on the other hand, must be maintained within a much narrower range for health to also be maintained, and this is why many physicians maintain that the blood pH reading is the most important determinant of your body’s acid-alkaline balance.
How Your Body Regulates pH
Because appropriate pH levels are so vital to maintaining proper body function, nature designed a number of interrelated mechanisms that help regulate the acid-alkaline balance of the body’s fluids, organs, and tissues. These mechanisms work in two ways: either by eliminating excess acid, or by neutralizing acid by drawing upon the body’s mineral stores. Let’s examine how each of these self-regulating processes work.
Eliminating Acids: Elimination of acids is chiefly accomplished by the kidneys and lungs, and to a lesser extent, through the skin. Your kidneys play a vital role in helping to regulate blood pH, by helping to eliminate what are known as fixed or solid acids, such as uric and sulfuric acids. When pH levels become too acidic, the kidneys excrete additional hydrogen ions into the urine, while retaining extra sodium. This process filters fixed acids out of the bloodstream, diluting them so that they can be eliminated in the urine. Phosphate (a form of the mineral phosphorus) is required for this to occur, and if enough reserves are not available, the body draws phosphorus directly from its bones.
In cases of extreme acidity, the kidneys excrete aluminum ions, which contain four types of hydrogen, into the urine. In cases where the body is too alkaline, this process is reversed, with the kidneys retaining more hydrogen and excreting extra sodium. But the kidneys are only able to eliminate a set amount of acids each day, no matter how hard they work to achieve this process. When the buildup of fixed acids exceeds the kidneys’ maximum daily capacity for elimination, problems can occur. Signs that your body is too acidic include cloudy and/or rust-colored urine, and a noticeable urine odor. When acidic buildup is particularly high, a burning sensation can also accompany urination. It’s important to note, however, that changes in urine color and odor can also be due to other factors, including various disease conditions.
As you breathe, your lungs also help to regulate acid-alkaline balance. During the breathing process, carbon dioxide combines with water in the blood to form a type of acid called carbonic acid. Respiration helps remove carbonic acid from the bloodstream, thus decreasing acidity. Your rate of respiration varies depending on how acidic or alkaline your body is. In conditions of over-acidity, your respiratory rate will tend to become faster, as your body attempts to remove higher levels of carbonic acid to help bring acid-alkaline levels back into balance. Similarly, in conditions of excess alkalinity, respiration rates tend to slow down, as the body seeks to retain acids to reduce alkaline levels.
The sweat glands in your skin also help to eliminate acids. As we perspire, acids are flushed out of your body. However, less acids are eliminated in this process compared to urination. On average, you eliminate nearly one quart of sweat every 24 hours, compared to about one and a half quarts of urine that is eliminated during the same period. In addition, smaller concentrations of acids are carried away by sweat than by urine. Body odor associated with perspiration is usually a strong indicator that your body is too acidic.
Neutralizing Acid Buildup: Neutralization of acids can occur during the digestive process and through cellular metabolism. When you eat a meal, as the foods you consume are digested, both the stomach and pancreas secrete substances that can affect acid-alkaline balance. As these secretions are absorbed into the bloodstream during digestion, they are then circulated throughout the rest of the body. The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid (HCL) to help the body breakdown food. This, in turn, causes the pancreas to secrete bicarbonate, a form of acid salt that neutralizes, or buffers, HCL after it performs its function. If HCL is not neutralized, it can interfere with the pancreatic enzymes that are also necessary for proper digestion.
Usually, these secretions create temporary corresponding changes in blood pH called acid and alkaline tides. But once the digestive process is complete, the blood pH soon returns to normal. However, poor diet as well as the other factors can interfere with this process causing these secretions to become unbalanced. When this happens, it can create havoc in the body.
The most common symptom of this imbalance is heartburn, due to over-acidity. Often we take heartburn medications, such as Tums, Rolaids, and Alka-Seltzer, for this problem, which only offer temporary relief of these symptoms. They do not, however, address its underlying causes. Studies indicate that when these antacids are used on a regular basis, they can actually make the problem worse. They can disrupt the acid-alkaline balance, and interfere with your body’s ability to properly absorb folic acid, vitamin B12, and many of the minerals essential for good health.
Ironically, the ads you see on TV for heartburn medications imply that heartburn is due to excess production of stomach acid (HCL). In actuality, this isn’t true. Research published as early as the 1960s, in peer-reviewed medical journals such as Lancet, indicated that in most cases of abnormal HCL production, too little HCL is being produced, not too much. This is especially true as we get older. When HCL is lacking, certain foods, especially proteins, are only partially digested, which can lead to fermentation of undigested food particles in the stomach, resulting in mucus buildup in along the intestinal tract, which, if it persists, can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb and metabolize nutrients. But lack of HCL production is not the only potential cause of over-acidity.
Too little bicarbonate production by the pancreas can also cause over-acidity. Diarrhea, which diminishes the body’s bicarbonate supply, and vomiting, which can result in loss of stomach acid, can also cause problems. However, the most common underlying culprit is poor diet--often accompanied by eating too much or eating too fast (gulping down meals without allowing the food to be properly chewed and digested). In the vast majority of cases, when dietary habits improve, heartburn and digestive-related issues resolve themselves automatically.
Not only is the body blessed by nature with various methods of controlling normal blood pH levels, it also has similar inherent mechanisms designed to regulate the acid-alkaline balance within each individual cell. This is primarily accomplished in two ways. In the first method, regulation is achieved by pumps within the cell membrane. It is through these pumps that hydrogen molecules enter and exit the cells. In order for this process to properly occur, phosphorus and magnesium are required. When they are not readily available, the body will pull them from bone and/or various organs. If forced to do so on a regular basis, our body will eventually move out of homeostasis, setting the stage for illness to occur. In the second method of cellular regulation, internal cellular pH levels are maintained by the cells themselves, which alter chemical reactions depending on how much or how little hydrogen needs to be produced.
In addition to these methods, when pH imbalances are prolonged, the body will seek to compensate for them by drawing out various minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, from bones and organs. It does so in order to neutralize the buildup of acids and then safely eliminate them. But if the body has to resort to such methods for long periods, it places itself under internal strain. Such stress of this nature can eventually create great damage to the body, causing premature aging, excessive weight gain, lack of energy, and impaired digestion and elimination, among a host of other conditions.

Self-Care Tips for Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a back condition characterized by unnatural curvature of the spine. Usually scoliosis consists of two curves: the original abnormal curve and an additional curve that runs in the opposite direction that is caused by the body’s attempts to compensate for the original curve. Conventional medicine treats scoliosis by monitoring patients to determine if their spinal curvatures are worsening, but provide little in the way of preventive care for scoliosis. If the condition does worsen, conventional treatment approaches include electro-stimulation of the spine, back braces, and surgical procedures ranging from spinal fusion and the installation of rods along the spine to prevent further curvature. In stark contrast to these approaches, holistic health care practitioners take a far less drastic and less invasive approach in their treatment options to help reverse scoliosis.
Types of Scoliosis
There are a number of different types of scoliosis, ranging from congenital scoliosis, meaning scoliosis that occurs due to birth defects of the spine, inflammatory scoliosis, which is caused by inflammation of the spine, and osteopathic scoliosis, which is due to deformities within the spinal vertebrae. By far the most common type of scoliosis, however, is idiopathic scoliosis, meaning scoliosis with no known cause, which affects people who are otherwise healthy and accounts for more than 80 percent of all cases of scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is divided into four categories based on a person’s age: infantile scoliosis (children 3 and under), juvenile scoliosis (children 3-9 years old), adolescent scoliosis (children and teens10-18 years old), and adult scoliosis, which occurs after a person stops growing in height. Of these subcategories, the most common form of scoliosis is adolescent scoliosis.
Symptoms of Scoliosis
The most common symptoms of scoliosis, in addition to the obvious abnormal curvature of the spine are shoulders of different heights, with one shoulder blade jutting out more prominently than the other; head not centered directly above the pelvis; a raised, jutting hip; different heights between the left and right rib cage; uneven waist; changes in the look or texture of the skin overlying the spine, such as dimples, hairy patches, and/or color changes; and tilting of the entire body to one side.
Causes of Scoliosis
The most common causes of non-idiopathic scoliosis are birth defects and other genetic conditions, neuromuscular problems, and leg-length disparity. Scoliosis can also be caused by disease conditions, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and tumors, all of which require prompt medical attention. Although conventional medicine claims there are no known causes of idiopathic scoliosis, alternative health practitioners disagree. From the perspective of alternative medicine, idiopathic scoliosis is primarily caused by misalignments of the spine (known as subluxations, according to chiropractic theory) and/or stagnation in the body’s flow of vital energy.
Subluxations cause pressure to be exerted on the nerves that pass through the spine. Over time, this nerve pressure can cause muscles along the spine to tighten and contract along one side of the spine, while corresponding muscles along the opposite of the spine weaken. This causes the vertebrae of the spine to be pulled in the direction of the contracting spine, causing scoliosis.
Stagnation of the body’s vital energy, known as qi by practitioners of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, can also cause spinal muscles to tighten and contract, pulling the vertebrae out of alignment and causing the spine to become curved.
Finally, one of the most common causes of idiopathic scoliosis, especially in teenagers and adults, is habitual posture, both while sitting and standing. As your poor posture habits become more pronounced, your body is forced to compensate. This compensation process can also cause muscle contraction and lead to scoliosis.
Alternative Healing Methods for Scoliosis
Acupuncture: Acupuncture can help correct scoliosis that is caused by muscle contractions due to its ability to release your body’s stagnant vital energy or qi. As your vital energy begins to freely flow once more, your muscles will automatically start to relax and return to their normal shape. This, in turn, can significantly improve scoliosis.
To further stimulate vital energy and correct scoliosis, electrical current may sometimes be passed through the acupuncture needles. This helps to deepen the effects of the acupuncture treatment, resulting in deeper healing and longer-lasting results.
Aromatherapy: Relaxation massaging tense muscles that are contributing to your scoliosis with essential oils can help release muscle tension and contraction. Ideal essential oils for this purpose include clary sage, lavender, marjoram, and rosemary.
Bodywork: The field of bodywork offers a number of techniques for treating and preventing scoliosis, such as Rolfing and Hellerwork, both which involve manipulation of the muscles, connective tissue, and joints in order to allow the body, muscles, and connective tissue to properly realign themselves. Other types of bodywork that can effectively treat scoliosis include Bowen therapy, massage therapy, reflexology, and shiatsu. Movement awareness therapies such as the Alexander technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and Trager Work, are also effective for realigning and correcting posture and spinal curvature.
Chiropractic: Chiropractic can be very effective in helping to resolve scoliosis because of its ability to correct spinal misalignments. All forms of chiropractic care work by adjusting the spine to release subluxations. In doing so, chiropractic also alleviates nerve pressure and restores normal muscle function, all of which can significantly reduce scoliosis symptoms.
Lifestyle: In dealing with scoliosis, it is essential that you improve your posture and learn how to properly move your body. A regular exercise program, especially stretching, can also help improve your symptoms.
Nutritional Supplements: Calcium and magnesium supplements can help your back muscles to relax, thereby helping to release chronic muscle contraction that is associated with scoliosis.
Osteopathy: Because of their ability to combine conventional and alternative medicine techniques, osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) are in a unique position to treat scoliosis. Osteopathic techniques range from gentle joint work to specific thrust approaches similar to chiropractic adjustments.
In addition to being able to manipulate the spine and other joints of the body to relieve tight muscles and restore spinal alignment, most D.O.s are also licensed to give injections in order to relieve painful inflammation in the joints that can also cause scoliosis. They may also use electrical stimulation and various forms of mechanical therapy in order to trigger muscle relaxation, including gentle “muscle energy” techniques, and functional and positional release techniques, all of which are unique to osteopathic medicine.
Physical Manipulation Techniques: Physical manipulation techniques help to move the muscles, connective tissues, and vertebrae of the back into proper alignment, and can also correct problems relating to stress and physical pain. Physical therapists will also usually work to stretch and relax muscles by teaching their patients effective stretching exercises, and by training them to develop healthier habits related to posture.
Other useful treatment methods for scoliosis include Applied Kinesiology, Craniosacral Therapy, Neural Therapy, Qigong, Tai Chi, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yoga.

Patient Number One: A True Story of How One CEO Took On Cancer and Big Business in the Fight for His Life by Rick Murdock and David Fisher. Imagine being the CEO of a thriving biotech company only to be diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of cancer for which there is no cure (acute mantle cell lymphoma). That is precisely what happened to Rick Murdock, CEO of a company called CellPro. Once he learned of his disease, his company marshaled all of its resources and developed a cure for him. The end result, the medical industry in the form of Baxter Healthcare, relying on archaic patent laws, waged an all-out attack on CellPro because of its discovery and in order to protect their own special interests. Guess who won? It wasn’t CellPro. This book makes it perfectly clear just how corrupt medical research has become in this country and I highly recommend it.
