What’s New
I’m late (by a week) once again yet you don’t want to hear my excuses, so let’s jump right in. This week, I’m commenting on a couple of victories on the health freedom front and sharing an example of how health care looks in a third-world country compared to what we have he/re in the States (after reading the anecdote myself, I was tempted to move to Thailand, where the example stems from).
You’ll also find self-care tips for preventing and reversing food poisoning, a very common occurrence and more serious than most people realize.
As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.
Quote Of The Day
“The only peace, the only security, is in fulfillment.” -- Henry Miller
Fast Fact
Our conscious mind is only aware of 16 bits of the 40 million bits of information that come to our senses each and every second—that’s less than one-tenth of one percent of all that is available to us to perceive.

Good News on the Health Freedom Front
April is proving to be a good month for health freedom advocates (everyone who wants to be able to make their health freedom choices relying on their own judgment and f/r/e/e from the interference of government bureaucrats and special interests groups who would prefer we don’t think for ourselves). First, those who would suppress the sale of most vitamins and minerals in the EU, then the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was told by a federal judge that its ban of ephedra cannot stand. He/re’s a recap of both stories, as well as my commentary.
Good Supplements Directive Found Illegal Under EU Law
On April 5, thanks to the perseverance of the Alliance for Natural Health and Nutri-Link, Ltd, who fought long and hard to bring their challenge to court, the Advocate General for the European Courts of Justice (ECJ) concluded that the Food Supplements Directive that would in effect ban 75 percent of all nutritional supplements sold within the European Union was “invalid under EU law.” In his Opinion, the Advocate General said: “The Food Supplements Directive infringes the principle of proportionality because basic principles of Community law, such as the requirements of le/gal protection, of le/gal certainty and of sound administration have not properly been taken into account.” In other words, the Directive doesn’t hold water.
It must be stressed that the Opinion does not constitute a le/gal ruling. However, if the Advocate General's recommendations are adopted by the full ECJ later this year (something that is n/o/w considered very likely), “in effect, the ban on vitamin and mineral fo/rms not included on the EU's 'Positive list,' due to come into effect on 1 August 2005, will be declared illegal.”
I am heartened by the Advocate General’s good common sense in this matter. Although this matter is far from settled, it n/o/w looks as if justice will prevail and the Food Supplements Directive will not fly. Doubtless, the powers-that-be (Big Pharma and its coterie of bought and paid for lawyers and bureaucrats) are actively working to ensure that doesn’t happen, yet I remain optimistic that the will of the people will be what determines how matters end up being resolved. Till then, if you can, please consider lending your support to the Alliance for Natural Health in whatever way you can. (Visit their website – see Medical Freedom Alert above.)
FDA Ban on Ephedra Supplement Struck Down
More good news followed on April 14, when a federal judge he/re in the US ruled that the FDA’s ban of ephedra wrongly regulated the h/e/rb “as a drug and not a food.” The judge, Tena Campbell, was ruling on a lawsuit brought against the FDA by Nutraceutical, a Utah-based supplement company that challenged the FDA’s ban based on the fact that “ephedra has been safely consumed for hundreds of years.” [Which, indeed, it has, and it is also a staple h/e/r/b among practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.]
Judge Campbell’s ruling prevents the FDA from stopping Nutraceutical (and therefore other supplement manufacturers whose ephedra formula are similar in dose to Nutraceutical’s) from selling its ephedra product. Yet Bruce Hough, President of Nutraceutical, said the lawsuit “had little to do with ephedra and more to do with forcing the FDA to follow the rules Congress set down for it.” [As established by the DSHEA Act of 1994.]
(For more on this story, see “Judge strikes down FDA ban on amphetamine-like herb”, from the Associated Press, April 14, 2005. And note the propagandistic headline of the news story, further proof of how the truth about natural types of healing is routinely distorted by the mainstream media in this country.)
Although Judge Campbell’s ruling is welcome news, it hardly corrals the continuing machinations of the FDA against all types of alternative healing methods that do not rely on drugs and/or surgical procedures. And, because such a matter wasn’t the scope of the lawsuit brought against it, the ruling says nothing of the FDA’s right to have any say over the sale of nutritional and botanical supplements in the first place. After all, do we really need a regulatory agency whose administrative heads and acting commissioner clearly kow-tow to the interests of Big Pharma at the expense of the American public, and thus approve drugs that kill at least 125,000 Americans each and every year when they are properly prescribed, bringing their bias and incompetence to bear upon far safer health options? Of course not!
And for those who will point out that ephedra use was responsible for 155 deaths, as the FDA claims, the facts speak otherwise. First of all, prior to the FDA’s ban, an estimated 12 million Americans used ephedra products. More to the point, of the 155 deaths, only two can actually be said to be definitively due to ephedra use, and in both cases the users were consuming it in amounts far above what was recommended. In all of the other cases, multiple factors were also present which were ne/ver examined and yet which equally could have been the primary cause of death.
Any substance, including water, can be toxic if over-consumed. That’s where common sense comes in. Not a federal agency that ne/ver hesitates to speak out against natural methods of healings whenever it gets a chance, yet allows drugs companies such as Merck, the manufacturer of Vioxx, to continue to peddle its so-called arthritis relief medication despite the fact that it killed 55,000 people. And even then, the FDA has brought no action against Merck, despite the fact that information has subsequently surfaced that Merck knew even before it submitted the drug for FDA approval that it had the potential to cause death by heart attack and stroke. No, all the FDA did was allow Merck to voluntarily pull the drug off the market, and then, via its so-called investigative committee, rule to allow Merck to reintroduce Vioxx with a black box label. Doing so against the recommendations of one of its own chief scientists, Dr. David Graham, who has testified before Congress of the favorable bias the FDA exhibits towards Big Pharma at the administrative level. (After Dr. Graham spoke out, he was censored by his superiors in the FDA.)
Let’s hope that Judge Campbell’s ruling will be the start a long overdue campaign to once and for all get the FDA off the backs of the more than 70 percent of all Americans who are choosing some type of alternative medicine to address their health care needs. We’re big boys and girls and fully capable of making our own decisions. We don’t need an inept and dishonest government “nanny” to make our decisions for us.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Reversing Food Poisoning
Food poisoning refers to any health problem that is characterized by abdominal pain, associated with diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, and weakness, usually within 48 hours of eating a food contaminated with a virus or bacteria.
Symptoms: Symptoms of food poisoning can vary greatly. Onset may be 30 minutes to one hour with chemical poisoning; one to twelve hours with bacterial poisoning; 12 to 48 hours from viral or salmonella poisoning. Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and, in very severe cases, collapse and shock.
Occurrence: Many cases of diarrhea each year are probably due to food poisoning. Many go unreported as the cause is not known and is usually attributed to the stomach flu.
Things To Consider: Flu, gastrointestinal disorders, digestive enzyme deficiencies, drug interactions, stress, and nutrient deficiencies or excess (too much magnesium can cause loose stools and abdominal cramps) can all mimic food poisoning. In infants, symptoms of food poisoning can actually be due to intolerance to honey.
You should usually suspect food poisoning when a number of people who ate the same food get similar symptoms. The most common forms of food poisoning are infective types such as salmonella, found usually in farm animals or passed on by food handling or flies from contaminated fecal material. Food products most likely to cause problems are poultry such as chicken, duck, or geese, raw or partly cooked eggs, or raw fish such as clams, oysters, or sushi. Frozen poultry that is not completely thawed before being cooked is a common cause of this problem. Other organisms such as Staphylococcal bacteria can be passed from food handlers through hands, coughing, sneezing, or breathing onto the food. Botulism is associated with food preserved at home.
Viruses can contaminate shellfish and are often due to contaminated waters. Foods that remain at room temperature too long, such as large portions of meat prepared for restaurants and allowed to sit out at room temperature, can encourage Clostridium to grow, often referred to as the “cafeteria germ.” Other infective organisms can be Giardia and Campylobacter, and may take up to one week to show symptoms. Noninfective food poisoning is caused by poisonous mushrooms, toadstools, and fresh vegetables and fruits that have been contaminated accidentally with too many chemicals and insecticides, by being stored in inappropriate containers, or leakage of metals from the containers into the food.
If very severe vomiting and diarrhea occur, emergency medical intervention must be sought. Keep samples of food for testing, if possible. If due to chemical or bacterial toxins, treatment may require pumping the stomach (gastric lavage). Milder cases can be home treated. Usually improves within three days unless due to botulism, chemical poisoning, or mushroom poisoning.
One covert problem with infective organisms is that sometimes they do not have identifiable initial symptoms but linger in the body and may cause long-term health problems that are difficult to diagnose. May also cause constipation in addition to diarrhea.
Self- Care
Diet: Stop eating all solid food, drink plenty of fluids. Immediately, take six charcoal tablets, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacteria, L. bulgaricus, and citrus seed extract. Take electrolyte replacement, if needed, made by dissolving one teaspoon of salt and four teaspoons of sugar (which helps the intestines absorb both) in one quart of water. Be accurate with salt amount or it may create more dehydration. If you are traveling in areas where food poisoning is common, try eating more hot, spicy foods to encourage more gastric secretions; avoid all drinking water except bottled water and any raw vegetables. Add high-fiber foods and garlic.
Nutritional Therapy: • Acidophilus • Charcoal tablets • Citrus seed extract • Garlic capsules • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids • Kelp.
Botanical Medicine: For general mild food poisoning, fast and drink cumin, coriander, fennel tea.
Homeopathy: Arsen alb., Chamomilla, Ipecac., Apis mel., Nux vom., Colchicum.
Juice Therapy: Carrot, beet, garlic (the more the better).
Health Care in the Third World
[The following report was written by a former officer in the US military who has been living in Thailand for more than a decade. It comes from a f/r/e/e online newsletter entitled What We N/o/w Know, published by Doug Casey, which I highly recommend. To find out more about it, visit http://www.caseyresearch.com/wwnkOptIn.php.]
A lot of people think they know why I live in Thailand (the women). Let me tell you about an experience I had today that may expand your understanding:
Since I left the U.S., I haven't been as pathologically concerned about my health as I was at home. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that there aren't any commercials on cable pushing Prevacid, Via/gra, Celebrex or any other of a myriad of snake oils for me to cure what ails me...namely, getting old. But this year I lost a father, an uncle and spent 2 weeks with a brother who is living with HIV. To say I'm feeling a little mortal would be a drastic understatement.
In years past, I had a thorough physical around my birthday every year. This is one of the good habits I picked up in the military. Since residing in Thailand, I've let my maintenance program slip a bit. While I'm still fanatical about my dental program, I stopped worrying about things like cholesterol, sugar, PSA levels and the like. But with family members and acquaintances dropping like flies, I figured I should have someone che/ck under the hood. Out of morbid fear, I put it off for six months, then I made the appointment.
To be fair, I had some inside help: I met an American doctor in the gym. He is a 62-year-old California health fanatic who pounds the weights 4 times a week and practices at one of the local hospitals. He scheduled me to come in and get the usual battery of blood work, chest x-rays, EKG, physical exam and a couple of other x-rays for my nagging old hip and back problem.
When I arrived, an older Thai woman named Numthip, who spoke impeccable English, met me at the rece/ption and walked me over to Admissions. Within 10 minutes, I had a cre/dit card-like ID that gave all my pertinent information needed to process me at any treatment center in the hospital. And when I say "hospital", it looks more like a shopping mall with a hotel in it. They have a plastic surgery center, a women's center, a bone and spine specialty shop and the largest heart surgery facility in Southeast Asia. Numthip cheerfully waited for me at each stop while I had all my vitals collected, had blood drawn, got x-rayed, received a physical exam and an EKG. I was done in less than 45 minutes. I cheerfully paid the cashier 4,000 THB (a little less than $100 USD).
Five hours later, my doctor friend called me with the results. Fortunately, I'm as healthy as a really healthy horse. No bugs, worms, tics or life-long debilitating ailments. My back is a different story, and I'm going back to see the bone doctor he/re in two weeks. They specialize in arthroscopic back and hip surgery he/re. Every few weeks, we see a picture in the Bangkok Post of some famous athlete coming he/re to get "scoped". If it's good enough for Tiger Woods, it's good enough for me.
So, let's review. I got an appointment, no problem. I got escorted from clinic to clinic by someone whose job it was to keep track of me. I was in at 10 AM and out at 11:15 AM. I paid less than $100 USD and got the results in the same day with a personal telephone call.
The most important thing I've learned about my home countrymen since moving to Thailand is that Americans are even more sheltered than the English. They live in a bubble that runs inaccurate news on the TV 24/7. When you tell Americans that the healthcare system in Thailand is superior to the U.S., they simply don't believe you. When I tell people that I eat the best food in the world for about $3 a day, they are incredulous.
But then again, what do I know, I’m only he/re for the women.

Books Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Dreams by Esther and Jerry Hicks. This book is the latest collection of teachings from a discarnate group of teachers who call themselves Abraham. Although I am not that interested in so-called “channeled” information, there are a few exceptional sources for this information that I really enjoy. This is one of them, and I can attest from personal experience that the techniques in this book truly work, and that they can do so extremely fast.
Third Opinion, 4th edition by John M. Fink. I receive a lot of requests for information regarding viable alternative cancer treatments and the doctors and centers that are providing them. This excellent reference guide provides detailed listings of the best such sources, both h/e/re in the U.S. and abroad. Though the entries Fink includes are not in-depth, he provides readers with the information they need to make informed choices. Very highly recommended.
That’s all for this week.
