What’s New
In this issue I conclude my series The Importance of pH to Your Health with a discussion of foods to eat in order to shift your body’s pH to a healthy level (slightly alkaline). You’ll also find self-care tips for dealing with nearsightedness. In addition, I am weighing in on the so-called avian flu pandemic that is being bandied about in the media these days. What I have to say very much runs counter to the “official story.”
As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.
Quote Of The Day
“When we give government the power to make medical decisions for us, we, in essence, accept that the state owns our bodies.” -- U.S. Congressman Ron Paul, M.D.
Fast Fact
The word antibiotics means “against life.”
Medical F/r/e/edom Alert (A New Call To Action)
Currently in play in the U.S. House of Representatives are two bills, most of which could have a profound affect of our health care freedoms, for good or ill (no pun intended).
The bill that could have a positive affect has been introduced by my favorite member of the House, Congressman Ron Paul, of Texas, who consistently votes in favor of individual liberty as sanctioned by the Constitution. His bill, known as HR 2352, would, if passed into law, further strengthen the protection afforded natural supplements under the DSHEA act of 1994 by reversing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s current stance on nutrients and permitting “the accurate label and labeling claims of the curative, mitigation, treatment and prevention effects of foods and dietary supplements on disease and health-related conditions.” This is an important bill that would go a long way to ensuring our medical freedoms if enacted as law. Please let your U.S Representatives know if you are in favor of its passage.
A bill that would have the opposite effect, weakening DSHEA in the process, is HR 3156, which is being sponsored by Congresswoman Susan Davis, San Diego, CA, and co-sponsored by Congressmen Henry Waxman, also of California (and long allied against the supplement industry) and John Dingell, of Michigan.
HR 3156 treats nutrients as potential toxins (through the use of Risk Assessment which is the wrong science for assessing nutrients), and as such, is totally unscientific and would cause tremendous damage to our health and the natural wellness industry. I urge you to let your U.S. Representatives know that you oppose passage of HR 3156.

Avian (Bird) Flu—Pandemic or Hoax?
A number of readers have emailed me asking what I think of the current government and media propagated avian flu threat, and what they can do about it. I’ve been following the stories and listening to the so-called experts as they trumpet their horrific predictions, and have come to the following conclusion: In a word, it’s a hoax. Or, at the very least, hype that is founded on very poor excuses for scientific inquiry. All of which is evident if you actually examine the official pronouncements that are being made on the subject.
It’s not my intent to discuss this issue in detail, since there are others who are doing so in great detail and very credibly (see the links to some of them below). One of them is Jon Rappoport, an investigative journalist who regularly points out the holes in various official health stories. He/re is one of the articles he’s written on the subject:
“A Note On Bird-Flu Predictions October 14, 2005.
After slogging through a number of articles on bird flu, I've seen a simple pattern.
The headline screams pandemic, and the body of the story reveals a small paragraph in which some expert says the current bird-flu virus probably won't cause a pandemic.
It'll be some other virus, or a different strain of the current virus.
When you think this over, the prediction goes something like this: "At some unknown time in the future, there will be a flu virus that will kill mil/lions of people."
Accepting, for the moment, this formulation, one can see the prediction could have been made at any time since the dawn of cvilization on Earth. And as long as the date is not nailed down for the arrival of the "killer germ," the prediction still has legs, because "the future" is very long and very open-ended.
And with a purported death stat of 60 people from the current avian virus-that's over the last 3 years [emphasis added]-the whole charade looks as ridiculous as a warning that car tires escaping on their own from junkyards will kill half the U.S. population.
Then you can add this: if a population of people has severely compromised immune systems, because of contaminated water, starvation, overcrowding, no sanitation system, any circulating germ can create an epidemic. And if a population is reasonably well fed, is drinking fairly clean water, has decent sanitation, and doesn't live on top of one another, the chance of a germ epidemic of any kind is very slim.”
(Copyright © 2005byJon Rappoport and www.nomorefakenews.com. All rights reserved.)
The next time you read or listen to the latest bird flu warning, ask yourself if the so-called experts take into account any of the vitally important points that Jon mentions above. Most likely, they won’t, nor will the so-called journalists show enough independent thought to raise them. Instead, what we are seeing is a closed system of official pronouncements from government and health officials that are reported without question by a mainstream media that is once again showcasing its lapdog status.
So, if the bird flu story is indeed hoax or hype, why is it suddenly surfacing in the news? I believe that the best way of answering that question is by asking another one: Who pro/fits because of it? He/re are some likely outcomes:
1) Huge windfalls for Big Pharma, which has already pro/fited immensely under both the Clinton and Bush administrations due to government giveaways to the drug industry. (This has already occurred, with billions of dol/lars having been added to Big Pharma’s coffers.)
2) Fear disseminated through the populace, keeping attention scattered and off of other events that are far more ominous, such as investigating whether or nor the White House did in fact lie in order to bring about the disastrous invasion of Iraq.
3) A furtherance of the agenda to place health and our access to health care completely under the thumb of the government, which is already well underway.
4) The perfect ruse for further eroding the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (Bush has already floated the idea of the military being in charge of a flu epidemic, which would certainly violate posse comitatus) and enforcing public quarantines (Bush’s plan for dealing with flu epidemics that he announced today clearly mentions curtailing our freedom to travel).
To keep abreast on this issue, I highly recommend the latest website of Dr. Sheri Tenpenny, who for years has also been exposing the hype and dangers associated with traditional annual flu vaccines. You can stay informed by visiting http://www.birdfluhype.com.
Jon Rappoport has been covering this issue in detail lately, too. You can search his archives of articles at http://www.nomorefakenews.com (while you’re there, also seek out his articles about SARS to see how this pattern of hype and hoax is repeating itself).
Finally, he/re are two other articles of interest:

The Importance of pH to Your Health (Part 6)—Alkalizing Foods
If you suffer from chronic acidosis, more than likely your diet is too high in acid-forming foods. To bring your body’s pH to a healthier level (slightly alkaline), you need to ensure that the majority of the food you eat at each meal are alkalizing. Alkalizing foods are rich in alkaline minerals and contain little to no acidic substances. In addition, these foods produce no acidic ash when they are digested and metabolized, regardless of how much of them are consumed at any meal. Foods in this category include all green vegetables, most colored vegetables, cold-pressed oils, sprouts, certain fruits and nuts, herbs and spices, and alkaline mineral water. Everyone suffering from chronic acidosis needs to include these foods at every meal, in much greater proportions (as high as 80%) than acidifying foods eaten at the same time.
Green and Colored Vegetables: The foundation of every alkalizing meal is plenty of vegetables, which should always be included as part of your lunch and dinner. Raw vegetables such as celery also make an ideal snack food during the day. Servings of green vegetables throughout the day are particularly potent aids in restoring acid-alkaline balance. All vegetables are rich in vitamins, alkalizing minerals and salts, enzymes, phytonutrients (nutrients derived from plant foods), and fiber. But green vegetables are also rich in chlorophyll, which is what gives them their green color. Chlorophyll contains many of the same chemical components as hemoglobin. Leafy green vegetables are particularly rich sources of chlorophyll.
Don’t neglect other colored vegetables, though. While not as rich in chlorophyll, they too are excellent sources of essential nutrients. Vegetables in this category that you can eat freely include beets, yellow cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, garlic, onions, potatoes, radishes, red and yellow peppers, scallions, turnips, and yellow squash.
Ideally, you should eat a certain amount of raw vegetables every day, while lightly steaming or sautéing the rest. This will ensure that the rich supply of enzymes that vegetables contain are not destroyed by overcooking. Enzymes are contained in all fresh fruits and vegetables and play an essential role in healthy digestion. When enzymes are deficient in your diet, your body is unable to properly digest and assimilate the foods you eat, setting the stage for further health problems. Enzymes are inactivated and destroyed when vegetables are cooked in temperatures over 118 degrees.
Whenever possible, it is also a good idea to select organically grown vegetables, which contain more abundant amounts of essential nutrients than do commercially grown produce, and are also f/r/e/e of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Organic vegetables are n/o/w readily available in health food stores and commercial chain grocery food stores. You can also find them at your local farm stands and farmers’ markets. Whether you use organic or non-organic produce, always be sure to wash them thoroughly.
And if you suffer from sugar sensitivities and/or are hyper- or hypoglycemic, initially you may want to avoid or minimize eating vegetables that have a naturally high sugar content, such as beets, carrots, and squash. Over time, however, as your health improves and your sugar problems stabilize, these vegetables can be added back to your diet and eaten in moderation.
Cold-pressed Oils: Cold-pressed oils are oils that are prepared without using heat or chemicals when they are extracted from their food sources (borage, flax seed, grape seed, hemp seed, etc.) Commercial methods of oils extraction not only destroy at least part of the oils’ nutrient supply, they also cause the oils to breakdown during processing, making them harder for your body is digest and metabolize. Cold-pressed oils are an important source of essential fatty acids (EFAs).
EFAs are monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats that are converted by the body into hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins, which regulate the body’s inflammatory response, and nourish body fats used to strengthen cell walls and provide cell.ular energy. EFAs also play an important role in strengthening the immune system. The EFAs contained in cold-pressed oils also help to bind and eliminate acids in the body. Good sources of cold-pressed oils include borage, canola, evening primrose, flax, grape seed, and olive oil. Of these, only canola and olive oil should be used for cooking. The other oils can be added to foods after they have been prepared.
Sprouts: Sprouts are a special class of food produced from the germination of beans, grains and seeds. The germination process requires no soil, only water and cool room temperatures. In the sprouting process, even foods that in their normal state are acidifying, such as beans and grains, become alkalizing due to what happens to them as they are sprouted. For example, proteins, fats, and starches are transformed into more easily digestible and assimilated amino acids, fatty acids, and vegetable sugars. In addition, sprouting also increases the amounts of certain nutrients sprouted foods contain, especially the B vitamins, which can increase from 50 to over 1,000% after beans, grains, and seeds are sprouted. Sprouts are also energy-rich foods that are high in enzymes, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients.
Though sprouts are n/o/w widely available in most health food stores and supermarkets across the country, it is recommended that you learn how to make your own sprouted foods. It is easy to learn how to do so. By growing your own sprouted foods, you can be assured of their freshness, and have a constant supply of nutrient rich, highly alkalizing foods ready available to you in your own kitchen.
Fruits: Though fruits are rich in essential nutrients, enzymes, and fiber, they are also abundant in natural sugars. This makes most fruits slightly acidifying when they are eaten. Most people should eat fruits sparingly.
The exceptions to this rule are bananas, grapefruit, lemons, limes, avocados, and tomatoes. (Though avocados and tomatoes are often considered to be vegetables, in actuality they are fruits. They are most alkalizing when eaten raw.) Bananas are naturally alkaline, whereas grapefruit, lemons and limes are acidic in nature. However, during the digestive process, as grapefruit, lemons, and limes are metabolized, they produce a highly alkalizing effect. All three of these fruits are also naturally rich in oxygen, further aiding their alkalizing abilities. As an easy and effective aid in helping your body maintain proper acid-alkaline balance, begin each day with a glass of purified water combined with the fresh squeezed lemon juice. Or, if you prefer, you can substitute lime. (Make sure you use organic fruits whenever possible.) This serves as an excellent tonic to get your morning started, and is highly alkalizing. Wait 20 to 30 minutes before you eat anything, to gain the full benefits.
Dried fruits, including dates, also produce an alkalizing effect in the body. This occurs because their acid content is oxidized during the drying process. To get the most benefits from eating dried fruit, be sure to select are f/r/e/e of sulfur, which is often used as a preservative in commercial brands. Since dried fruits also have a high natural sugar content, they should be eaten sparingly.
Nuts: The only alkalizing nuts are almonds and Brazil nuts. Brazil nuts are also a rich source of the trace mineral selenium, which is often lacking in the standard American diet, and which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Almond milk, made by combining purified water with almond paste, is an excellent alternative to dairy and soymilk because of its alkalizing effects. The medium Edgar Cayce, famed for the wealth of health-related information he transmitted while in trance, recommended that people eat a small handful of almonds every day in order to ensure good health. Cayce’s teaching also stressed the importance of a slightly alkaline pH as an essential step in preventing and reversing disease.
Herbs, Spices and Salts: Herbs and spices have been used for centuries for their health-promoting properties. Most herbs and spices have an alkalizing effect on the body, as well. This includes her/bal teas. Certain herbs, such as cayenne pepper, cinnamon, garlic, oregano, and sage, also function as spices that can add flavor to your meals. Unlike processed table salt, which should be avoided due to its acidifying effects, unprocessed sea salt and Celtic salt can also be used to spice up your meals. Both forms of these salts are alkalizing and are also rich in iodine, which is essential for healthy thyroid function. Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Treating Nearsightedness
Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is a condition characterized by an inability to properly see clearly when looking at objects in the mid- or far distance, while the ability to see clearly up close is unaffected. Nearsightedness occurs because light rays containing visual images fall in front of the retina instead of on it, making it difficult to properly see in the distance. All that conventional medicine can offer as treatments for nearsightedness are corrective prescription lenses (glasses or contact lenses) or surgery (Lasik and PRK).
The most common symptoms of nearsightedness are the inability to see clearly when looking at objects in the distance, a need to squint the eyes in order to see clearly, and eyestrain. Fatigue and headaches are other common symptoms.
The main causes of nearsightedness are due to the eyes becoming longer than normal or the cornea becoming too steeply curved. Another common cause has to due with an inability of the eye lens and its associated muscles to properly relax.
Self-Care
Ayurveda: According to Ayurvedic theory, most vision problems are due to digestive disorders. Emphasis is given to regular eye exercises, as well as the use of the herbs amla, licorice, and triphala, and a diet rich in organic, whole food with abundant quantities of antioxidant rich vegetables such as carrots and spinach.
Bates Method: The Bates Method was developed at the beginning of the 20th century by Dr. W. H. Bates, M.D. (1865-1931), a prominent American ophthalmologist, to improve sight and restore natural habits of seeing, which Dr. Bates believed became impaired through strain, tension and the resulting misuse of the eyes. The aim of the Bates Method is to teach people with vision problems such as astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness how to get the eyes and mind work together harmoniously to significantly improve eyesight.
The Bates Method is not a medical treatment, but a method of re-education that involves both active learning and the receptive awareness of how to appreciate what we see, such as the appreciation of a painting, a beautiful garden or a cathedral. Dr. Bates believed that healthy eyesight is the result of a relaxed state of mind and body in which the individual feels a direct contact with the surrounding world through his or her five senses. Poor eyesight, he believed, is the result of tension, where the person is, to a greater or lesser extent, isolated from the outside world through being locked in a pattern of psycho-physical tensions, such as worry, anxiety, rigidity, day-dreaming, boredom, confusion, impatience, etc.
The Bates Method is taught via a student-teacher relationship in which the student is shown how to relax the eyes, then the body, and then the body and eyes together. As the relaxation progresses, the mind, the eyes and the body begin to focus together more harmoniously, allowing eyesight to improve naturally by itself, along with the overall health of the eyes. For more information, visit http://www.seeing.org.
Diet: Emphasize a diet of organic, whole foods, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. These include bell peppers, berries, carrots, celery, cherries, citrus fruits, dark-green leafy vegetables, kale, mangos, melons, parsley, plums, red grapes, spinach, tomatoes, and yellow squash. Organic egg yolks are also recommended because they are rich in carotenoids, a class of antioxidants. Also be sure to drink plenty of fresh, filtered water throughout the day.
Avoid all processed and fried foods, sugar and sugar products, refined, simple carbohydrates, alcohol, an unhealthy hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils. Milk and dairy products should be consumed sparingly, if at all. In addition, be tested for food allergies and sensitivities and eliminate those foods for which you test positive.
Eye Exercises: The following eye exercises are useful for preventing and reversing most types of vision problems.
Rest your eyes for five minutes every 30 to 60 minutes, relaxing your gaze and staring into space.
Blink your eyes regularly. This reduces eyestrain.
Take regular breaks throughout the day to breathe deeply for a few minutes, followed by stretching your neck and shoulders. This helps to ensure that your eyes muscles receive adequate amounts of oxygen.
To further reduce facial tension, yawn in an exaggerated fashion. Doing so helps to stretch and relax your facial muscles.
Cover your eyes with you palms for five minutes and breathe deeply. Do this every one to two hours.
Spend 20 to 30 minutes each day rapidly switching your focus from near to far. An easy way to do this is to hold your finger six to eight inc/hes from your eyes. Focus on it for a moment, then focus on an object in the distance. Keep changing your focus from near and far. This is an excellent way to exercise your eye muscles.
Roll your eyes all the way up and down in a full circular motion for five minutes three to five times a day.
Pin a sheet of reading material to the wall and read it from two feet away (or closer if you need to). Each day, step further away from the wall. With regular practice, you will eventually be able to read the same material from across the room. If you are nearsighted, reverse this process, starting as far away from the sheet of paper as you need to be, then slowly moving closer each day until you are able to read it standing only a few inc/hes away.
Herbs: The following herbs can help to prevent and slow the progression of nearsightedness: bilberry, curcumin, gentian root, grapeseed extract, ginkgo biloba, and pine bark extract (pycnogenol).
Juice Therapy: Drink 16 ounces of carrot juice and/or carrot juice combined with fresh squeezed celery, cucumber, parsley, and spinach in two divided doses (eight ounces per serving) each day.
Lifestyle: Avoid eyestrain by refraining from working at computer terminal or reading for long periods of time. Also refrain from watching television of movies in the dark, as well as spending prolonged periods in darkness.
Nutritional Supplementation: Useful nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, flavonoids, lutein, N—acetyl-cysteine (NAC), riboflavin, selenium, taurine, zeaxthanin, and zinc.

Recommendation
Books Fog Facts and The Librarian. Both of these books are by Larry Beinhart, who also wrote Wag the Dog. The former is a nonfiction expose of what he terms “fog facts,” meaning facts that have been established and reported by the media, but which then disappear. It makes for very interesting, albeit depressing, reading. The Librarian is a novel about a plot to steal the presidential election. While the wholly fictitious tale he weaves is very enjoyable, the real facts that appear throughout the book are what have me recommending it.
That’s all for this week. More again soon. In the meantime, look for a special announcement from me tomorrow regarding diabetes, one of our nation’s most significant health threats.
Health and Blessings!
