SPECIAL HURRICANE KATRINA ISSUE
In This Issue
What’s New Resources for Finding Missing Loved Ones Resources for Choosing a Reputable Charity The 9/11 Tribute and Gas Out
What’s New Like all of you, I was a mix of emotions all last week as we witnessed the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina unfold. In this special issue of The Health Plus Letter, I am sharing resources I’ve found that can help you locate missing loved ones if you have such a need (I sincerely hope not), as well as resources for determining the most reputable charities if you are inclined to donate to the Katrina relief funds. In addition, I am sharing a recommendation on behalf of my friend, Dr. Pawel. As you see, this week I am not covering health topics, per se, yet I know from the many emails I receive from my readers that your interests go beyond the scope of health alone. I thank you in advance for providing me with this forum.
Resources for Finding Missing Loved Ones
If you or anyone you know are trying to locate loved ones as a result of Katrina and its aftermath, the following websites can help you to do so:
http://hurricanekatrinasurvivors.com
http://findkatrina.com
The first site is primarily devoted to posting the names of survivors who have been located and accounted for. There you can not only post messages for those you are searching for, but also search through their directory of names of survivors they have already located. There is also a listing of website links to other very useful news and help organizations.
The second site is primarily devoted to locating people who are still missing and is where you can also post information about the people you are trying to locate.
Resources for Choosing a Reputable Charity In response to the ongoing needs of the three states affected by Hurricane Katrina (Mississippi and Alabama, in addition to Louisiana), many charitable organizations have sprung into action. Of these, the most well known is the Red Cross. I commend them for the services they are rendering. However, in the last few days, I’ve learned more about them and so have chosen to send my own donations via other charities. My reason for doing so has to do with the fact—which I’m sure most of you, like me, were unaware of—that the Red Crossdoes not actually provide rescue services and only works in pre-designated shelters under FEMA command. In addition, the Red Cross also receives full government reimbursement for the services it provides, meaning that it doesn’t necessarily need the hundreds of mil/lions of dol/lars it has so far collected for Katrina by the American people. The Red Cross’s CEO, Marty Evans, admitted as much to Larry King on CNN the other night.
To find other reputable charities, who actually do provide rescue services and do other good works, and—just as importantly—allocate a high percentage of every dollar they raise for that purpose, instead of to pay adminstrative overhead and bankroll fundraising activities, please visit the following websites:
http://www.charitynavigator.org
http://www.guidestar.org
If you prefer to send goods in lieu of mon.ey to the survivors, you can help those currently sheltered at the Houston Astrodome by clothing and other goods to:
General Delivery Refugee Relief Houston, TX 77230
Be sure to indicate on the outside of the packages you ship that they contain goods. Also indictate if they are for men, women, or children.
The 9/11 Tribute and Gas Out
Even before Katrina struck, I, like you, had grown increasingly disturbed by the steadily escalating rise in gas prices. With prices n/o/w well over $3.00 in most areas of the country (and in some places as high as $5-$6.00), there is no question in my mind that the oil companies, instead of doing what they can to ease our national suffering, are in fact taking full advantage of our present situation for their own pro/fit. This on top of the $254 mil/lion in pro/fits (not revenues!) the American oil companies have taken in since 2001. Regardless of your political persuasion or personal feelings about our nation’s present administration, it is an undeniable fact that Big Oil has very close ties with the White House, including not only President Bush and Vice President Cheney, but also with various Cabinet members, including Condeleeza Rica and Donald Rumsfeld. Moreover, it is also a fact that the nation’s current energy policies were drafted by Vice President Cheney’s office with the significant participation of Big Oil reps (to this day, Cheney refuses to make the records of that meeting public). So there is little likelihood that we can expect leadership from the White House—or in Congress, for that matter—that will ease the price of gas we have to pay at the pumps. In light of that fact, by friend and chiropractor Dr. Pawel Pyrda has come up with what I feel is an appropriate response. If you agree with me, please spread this message to others and ask that they do the same. Here’s Pawel:
The price of gas is too high! The oil companies are laughing at us all the way to the bank. It's time to show them that we won't stand for it and I hope that you will join us and encourage everyone in your email group to do the same to show these companies that they have abused us enough!
Please join us in doing a three-day gas out. (One day is not enough, but three days will show Big Oil that we mean business! Because if we can do it for three days, the next time it might be for a week which translates into bil/lions of dollars in lost pro/fits for the oil companies.)
Here's what we you can do to make a difference: For three days, from September 11 through September 13, do not buy gas for your car and during those three days also do all that you can to conserve the amount of gas you use. If you can choose to stop fuelling up on September 9th or 10th, this will make an even big/ger impact, causing Big Oil to experience an even big/ger drop in revenues during this time.
We chose these three days as a tribute to all the people who died in the attacks of 9/11. During those three days, carpool, walk, or take a bike. And from this point on, consol.idate your weekly trips to make it one big trip and plan your route to be most efficient! Plan your big trips for another weekend and stay home with family and friends, as it is these people that need to know that we love and care about them. Please spread this message like wild fire and encourage everyone to join in. We will w/i/n this!!
Thank you for participating.Pawel Pyrda, DC
PS Print this out as a reminder & put it in your car!
That’s all for this issue. Next issue, I’ll be back with more articles devoted to improving your health and safeguarding your health freedoms.
