Passionate About Bone Health by Susan E. Brown, Ph.D., CCN, Director, Osteoporosis Education Project

My passion for bone health began with my grandmother, who had both osteoporosis and rickets and who died at the age of 102 after experiencing a hip fracture.  At age 36 I was told that I had receding gums.  This I knew was an early sign of osteoporosis.

These two personal experiences ignited by interest in bone health and propelled me to undertake a comprehensive “rethinking” of osteoporosis, sorting fact from fiction. To this end I founded the Osteoporosis Education Project (OEP), a non pro/fit, public interest group dedicated to exploring the full human potential for building and maintaining and regaining bone health.

At OEP we have been rethinking the true nature, causes and best prevention and treatment of osteoporosis for over a decade.  We n/o/w kn/o/w that osteoporosis is a rather complicated disorder often presented as a simple problem of calcium or estrogen deficiency.  As an anthropologist I have been able to rethinking osteoporosis from a cross-cultural perspective, developing critical new insights into this crippling bone disorder.

Rethinking osteoporosis we have found the nature of osteoporosis to be different than commonly held.

Rethinking the Nature of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Is Not…
Just thin bones
Normal aging bone loss
Common all over the world
A female disorder
A disorder of just the elderly
Faulty bone metabolism, something that “goes wrong” with our bones
An isolated disorder

Rather, Osteoporosis Is …
Thin and substandard bone
A degenerative disease
Common only in Westernized countries
A “feminist issue” in Westernized countries
Becoming more common among the young
An intelligent bodily response to the stress of long-term imbalance
One manifestation of systemic breakdown

For example, hip fracture rates vary 30-fold around the world, with some cultures being almost immune to osteoporotic fractures.  Cultures with highest calcium intake have the highest osteoporosis rates. Further, in many countries, like China, Japan, Germany and Ghana people have thinner bones than we do, yet they fracture much less than we do.

Rethinking the Causes of Osteoporosis

Adequate levels of many minerals like calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and boron are important to bone.  Vitamins are also essential. Vitamin D, well kn/o/wn for its role in calcium absorption, is taking on new importance as a growing number of us are n/o/w found to be Vitamin D deficient.  Vitamin A, on the other hand, should probably to limited to under 10,000 IU daily, as high does of vitamin A (but not beta carotene) appear to hamper bone health.  Excessive intakes of coffee, sugar, fat, alcohol or protein also damage bone.  Yet, those who take one or two alcoholic drinks a day actually have better bones than non-drinkers, and low protein intake is just as bad for bone as is  excessively high protein intake.  Exercise that builds muscle strength builds bone while disuse causes atrophy of both. Wei/ght loss causes bone loss, so dieters need special nutrient supplement programs. Strong medications like steroids have been long kn/o/wn to damage bone.  N/o/w research shows that even common non-steroidal pain killers also damage bone by delaying fracture repair.  De/ar to my heart, the most hidden cause of osteoporosis, namely excessive metabolic acidity, is finally becoming recognized as a major “bad guy” for bone health.

Rethinking the Best Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis

Recognizing the complexity of osteoporosis, we at the Osteoporosis Education Project have developed a comprehensive Eight Step Program for Bone Health Maximization.  Each of the eight steps is life supporting in itself, making this program one that builds better bones and a better body.

These eight steps involve:
Maximizing Nutrient Intake
Minimizing Anti-Nutrients
Building Digestive Strength
Development of the Alkaline Way Diet
Exercising into Bone Health
Promoting Endocrine Health
Considering Alternatives to Estrogen Drugs
Testing Your Program’s Bone-Building Power

”Better Bones, Better Body” is a great motto for all of us.  It is ne/ver too early to too late to build and rebuild bone naturally   Furthermore, everything we do for bone can be and should be good for the rest of our body!

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Managing Blood Clots

Blood clots are clots (thrombi) of blood formed inside major blood vessels, which are the major cause of many heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular disorders.

Symptoms:Usually none.

Special Notes: Blood solidification, or clotting, usually occurs as a healthy response within minutes after the skin is cut or there is trauma that causes bleeding. A clot helps seal the damage. However, blood clotting can be dangerous if it is inside healthy blood vessels. Unhealthy clotting can occur from platelets that get “activated” to clump together. This occurs when platelets come in contact with damaged arterial walls (see Heart Disease chapter), or due to nutrient deficiencies, poor dietary habits, or genetics. Once platelets get sticky, their shape changes and they easily mesh or clump together, causing a clot. Another factor is the production of fibrin, which helps bind the clump of platelets together. Fibrin is the end product of a cascade of coagulation (clumping) factors that occurs with the activation of just one molecule, which can lead to the explosion of up to 30,000 molecules of fibrin at the site of injury on the arterial wall.

Factors that may cause a buildup of platelet stickiness and fibrin are: birth control pills, late stages of pregnancy, nutrient deficiencies, smo/king, f/r/e/e radicals (inadequate antioxidant nutrients), a high-cholesterol diet, low essential fatty acids, genetics, a diet high in saturated fat and low in vegetables and fish, and liver disease.

Some doctors and medical researchers have found that prolonged sitting on long airline flights, especially in cramped conditions, puts a person at risk for developing pulmonary thrombosis. Blood clots forming in the legs or another part of the body break loose and then block one of the arteries to the lungs. Some practical preventive measures include: getting up and walking the aisle every hour, wearing loose, comfortable clothing, periodically stretching the legs and tightening and loosening the muscles of the abdomen and buttocks, and taking some slow, deep breaths.

In studies done at Duke Univer/sity, Salvatore V. Pizzo, M.D., showed that moderate exercise may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by enhancing the body’s natural mechanism for dissolving blood clots. In addition, Dr. Pizzo found that the higher risk of blood clotting in women taking oral contraceptives can be significantly reduced by exercise.

Self-Care

Diet:
Foods that act to decrease platelet stickiness and fibrin formation are garlic, ginger, onions, and hot peppers (capsicum), which protect against heart attack and stroke. Use granulated garlic on food as a regular spice. Fish oils help to reduce clotting of blood. Increase consumption of cold-water fish at least three times per week. You should also decrease sucrose consumption as sugar intake increases platelet stickiness.

Nutritional Therapy: • Vitamin B6 • Garlic capsules • Niacin (vitamin B3) • Lipotropic factors (nutrients useful for liver metabolism of fat) • Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids • Bromelain • Vitamin E may be useful in helping to dissolve blood clots • Vitamin C • Zinc • Magnesium • Manganese

If you are on aspirin as daily preventive therapy, you may want to begin a gut rejuvenation program to stimulate healing and proper gastrointestinal wall functioning, in order to offset aspirin’s traumatization of the gut wall when taken on daily basis. It is a good idea to do a bowel cleanse and rejuvenation several times a year when on daily aspirin (consult your physician for guidance).

Herbs: Hawthorne berry.

Homeopathy: Hamamelis.

Juice Therapy: Garlic, carrot, parsley, spinach, celery, beet.

Learning to Heal (Part 4)

In the journey back to healing, we can often benefit by examining the beliefs and attitudes we hold about ourselves and the conditions we are facing. Scientists are increasingly finding that such beliefs and attitudes can either substantially improve are ability to heal, or impede our efforts. By way of example, let me share with you an anecdote told to me by Dr. Bernie Siegel, the well kn/o/wn, pioneering physician in the fields of holistic medicine and mind/body medicine. Years ago, I interviewed Bernie by telephone, after he’d accepted my invitation to join the medical advisory board I was putting in place with my friend Burton Goldberg, for the first edition of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide.

During the course of our interview, I asked Bernie what had led to him shifting his medical practice, since he was trained as a conventional physician. He told me the shift was largely due to a patient who had come to him years before, who wasn’t feeling well despite having no noticeable health problems. A series of diagnostic tests revealed that the man, who was fairly on in age, had prostate cancer that had metastasized. It was quite serious, and Bernie wanted him to begin an immediate course of conventional cancer therapy. The man asked how long the course of treatment would take, and Bernie told him it would go on for month. The man’s reply was that he couldn’t make the time, because gardening season was about to begin, and he was passionate about tending his flowers. Bernie was taken aback by what he then considered to be the man’s inappropriate concern, telling him that if he didn’t begin treatment immediately, he would most likely be dead within the year, due to how widespread his cancer was. But the man calmly yet firmly refused, insisting that he needed to do his gardening. After unsuccessfully pleading with him for a while longer, Bernie finally said goodbye to the man in exasperation, thinking his choice would prove fatal.

Six years later, he came across the man again and was pleasantly surprised to find him looking much healthier than when he’d last seen him. Bernie went up to him and commended him on following his advice after all, for that was the only logical reason Bernie had to explain that the man was still alive. But the man surprised him, saying that he’d ne/ver had any treatment; he’d simply tended to his garden. For all Bernie knew, the man still had cancer (he ne/ver followed up with him), yet somehow, seemingly miraculously, he had long exceeded the conventional prognosis Bernie had given him. It was this incident that led Bernie to reconsider his medical training to ponder the importance of the patient’s own attitudes and beliefs. Since that time, Bernie has devoted himself to exploring just how significance such attitudes and beliefs can be.

I have no way of kn/o/wing what beliefs and attitudes were held by the man Bernie told me about, yet it seems clear that he received his diagnosis without fear, choosing instead to continue to devote himself to an activity that gave him great pleasure. Somehow, doing so kept him alive for at least another six years without the necessity of treatment. I can only surmise that this man was blessed with positive attitudes and beliefs, not only about his health condition, but his life in general. For how else can we explain the equanimity he displayed when Bernie tried to impress upon him the urgency of his condition? Most people, given such a diagnosis, would most likely have reacted in fear and dropped everything in order to stay alive. Instead, this man’s attention seems to have been more on the welfare of his flowers than on himself, hence his ability to face his diagnosis so calmly.

Next week, I will share with you ways in which you can better discover your beliefs and attitudes and, more importantly, replace those that don’t serve you with those that do. Till then, see if you can discover some of your current attitudes and beliefs in the following areas: your health, growing older, happiness, the relative safety of your life. Write them down as they occur to you and keep them handy for what I’ll be writing about next.

Website:
http://www.disinfo.org - I recommended this site a long time ago and am recommending it again after visiting it the other day. Lots of interesting articles on a wide variety of topics that you won’t find from traditional news sources.

Books
Tesla: Man Out of Time by Margaret Cheney. A fascinating biography of a visionary genius whose inventions far outstripped his rival, Thomas Edison. Among his contributions were the harnessing of alternating (AC) electrical current, the invention of the radio (contrary to popular opinion) and fluorescent lighting, and the foundation for the fundamentals of robotics, the computer, and missile science. And that’s just scratching the surface.

Villa Incognito by Tom Robbins. By Robbins’ standards, this is a rather lightwei/ght novel. By anyone else’s it’s inventive, provocative, and funny. I enjoyed it. You might too.

That’s all for this week.
