What’s New

Here I am, home again after a rewarding trip south, where I had the good fortune to spend time with Dr. Rashid Buttar, at his clinic, Advanced Concepts in Alternative and Preventive Medicine, in Cornelius, NC. There, I witnessed firsthand the innovative approaches Rashid is using to treat autism, heavy metal toxicity, cardiovascular illness, and cancer, and I was able to confirm his results by interviewing many of his patients and reviewing their records. Next month, Rashid share what he is doing before Senator Dan Burton’s Congressional Committee, which may be carried live on C-Span. I will let you know more about this in subsequent issues of The Health Plus Letter. Joining us for part of my time at the clinic was Dr. Antonio Jimenez, founder of the Hope For Cancer clinic in Tijuana, Mexico, who apprised me of his own recent research and discoveries regarding effective alternatives for treating chronic degenerative diseases. Both Tony and Rashid are friends of mine, and to me they represent the next generation of pioneering healers who will help usher in an entirely new medical paradigm to replace our current system, which continues to fall apart at the seams, due to its reliance on outmoded, costly, and, in many cases, life-threatening drugs and other medical procedures. Needless to say, the powers-that-be which exorbitantly pro/fit from our current system do not want physicians such as Rashid and Tony to succeed, but, as the saying goes, “Nothing can prevent an idea whose time has come.” Rashid and Tony will be profiled in depth in the cancer book I am working on, which will be available either late this year, or in early 2005.

Later in my trip, I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting with Dr. Zhi Gang Sha, a Qigong master and energy healer, who describes his mission as one of empowering everyone to learn how to heal themselves, using the healing techniques he shares. Though our schedules only allowed us to share about an hour with each other, I came away from my meeting very impressed with Dr. Sha’s wisdom and compassion.

To find out more about Drs. Buttar, Jimenez and Sha, I highly recommend that you visit their websites. They are, respectively,
http://www.drbuttar.com, http://www.hope4cancer.com and http://www.drsha.com. By visiting Dr. Sha’s website, you can also sign up to receive long distance energy healing from him and his associates, which he offers each Tuesday and Thursday evening. I also recommend his book, Power Healing.

Please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

“I don’t think we have an honest president. I don’t think that he is surrounded by honest people. I don’t believe that most of the people in Congress or in the Se/nate are honest. I don’t think that most people who head up business are honest. We have let them get away with it because we’re not honest enough to face up to the fact that we are ‘owned and operated’ by a bunch of really bad people”

- Frank Zappa, 1989

Health News and Commentary

Cell Phones Found to Damage Blood Cells

New research on mobile cell phones conducted by Swedish scientists found that radiation emitted from cell phones can harm blood cells by “increasing the forces they [the blood cells] exert on each other.” The finding "highlights the idea that electromagnetic radiation might act on cells by affecting the attractive forces between them rather than simply causing heat damage to tissue," according to Katie Daniel, deputy editor of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, who

said the finding was important. It “could be the key to claims that mobile phones cause cancer and other health problems,” according to the BBC, which reported the story.

To read more on this topic, see
http://snipurl.com/5mn3

[Comment: A number of scientists dismissed this finding as being only theoretical, insisting that it does not prove that cell phones are harmful. The research into this issue is ongoing and not likely to be concluded anytime soon, given the vested interests in place. My own choice in this matter is to use cell phones as sparingly as possible and I no longer own one.]

The Link Between High Cholesterol and Heart Attack Seriously Challenged By Researchers

A group of international researchers, collectively known as the Cholesterol Skeptics, are stepping forward to reject the commonly accepted believe that high cholesterol levels pose a higher risk for heart attack. According to the Skeptics, “There is almost no connection between the amount of cholesterol in your blood and your risk of a heart attack. Not only that, if you don't already have heart disease, you probably won't live any longer if you bring your cholesterol level down. Finally, statins, the cholesterol-reducing drugs we are all being urged to take, are of little
use to women.”

According to a recent article about the Skeptics in The Guardian (of England), recent research and analysis of past studies supports their claims. The findings of a number of trials, for instance, found that “even though the number of deaths from heart disease does fall when cholesterol is reduced by a range of means among patients in primary care … there is often an increase in the overall death rate from other causes.” In addition, late last year, an article in the British Medical Journal, which reviewed studies on statins, stated: “Statins in primary prevention have not consistently reduced the incidence of myocardial infarction [heart attack] or stroke. Other studies have even found that over the age of 50, reducing cholesterol increases the death rate.” [emphasis added]

Despite these findings, The Guardian report concludes: “The cholesterol hypothesis is unlikely to be abandoned in a hurry, given the wei/ght of financial and political muscle behind it.”

For more on this story, see:
http://snipurl.com/5mmd

[Comment: The findings of the Cholesterol Skeptics are hardly news to anyone familiar with the work of leading holistic health practitioners, including 1HealthyWorld medical advisor Dr. Garry Gordon. I’ve known about the “cholesterol myth” for over a decade, thanks to Garry and his peers. To find out the real risk factors involved in cardiovascular illness, I highly recommend Burton Goldberg’s eBook on the subject, and Dr. Gordon’s cardiovascular nutritional formulas, both of which you’ll find links to elsewhere in this issue.]

Enyzmes: A Primer by Garry Gordon, MD, DO, MD(H)

[Note: Enzyme therapy is an often overlooked key to restoring health, due to the many health benefits that enzyme supplementation can provide. In the following article, Dr. Garry Gordon shares some of the reasons why he makes enzyme therapy an integral part of his patients’ treatment approach.]

What are Enzymes?

Enzymes and enzyme systems constitute an essential component of life. They serve as the body’s catalyst to perform every function of our activities and are necessary to keep us alive. They are essential for our immune system, our digestive system, our blood and cardiovascular system, our reproductive system and for elimination. With the cessation of enzyme activity comes the cessation of life.

What do enzymes Do?

Enzymes help to destroy harmful elements in the body, including:

Infections & Viruses
Pollution & Noxious Agents
Rheumatic Diseases
Tumor Diseases and Carcinogens

Enzymes are essential for:

Controlling excessive inflammation
Eliminating the body’s early cancer cells
Digesting and assimilating nutrients
Inducing proper fluidity in the blood
Breaking down and repairing damaged tissue
Maintaining life and health

Why do we need enzyme supplements?

Enzymes age, are disassembled and then replaced by other enzymes which are ready and able to keep working. We depend largely on nutrition to obtain the essential factors that are required by enzymes to function properly. Unfortunately, when food is cooked, processed, or pasteurized, its enzymes are killed. A lack of food enzymes puts a burden on the digestive system, which affects the thyroid and other digestive glands. Eventually these glands and systems are forced to rob enzymes from other organs and tissues to keep functioning normally, thus causing a lack of enzymes in many parts of the body.

Some scientists believe that enzyme shortages in the body are causing many of our modern diseases, including:

Degenerative diseases: osteoarthritis, emphysema, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disorders, Alzheimer's. Auto-aggressive diseases: collagen vascular diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma. Autoimmune diseases: multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and even cancer.

How can we get the enzymes to maintain our health?

Most of us aren’t able to follow a natural, enzyme rich diet based on raw foods while we living in our fast paced world. Fortunately, scientists have developed safe nutritional supplements, which will effectively compensate for this omission. I believe the finest, safest, most effective, and most well documented of these supplements on the international market today is called Wobenzym Med.

What is Wobenzym Med?

Wobenzym enzyme therapy was developed in Germany in the 1960’s. Since that time, over one hundred million patients have been treated successfully with Wobenzym. The Austrian and German Olympic teams wouldn’t be without it. It is the world's safest therapy without a single documented instance of significant harm to any patient. Because of its numerous essential health benefits, I recommend Wobenzym to all of my patients.

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Managing Infection

Infection refers to the growth of disease-causing organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) anywhere in the body. The organisms grow in colonies that are invasive and multiply. They can damage cells through a variety of routes, such as directly, through release of toxins, or through allergic reaction. Many of the symptoms of the infection are usually a result of the immune system mounting a response to these foreign colonies.

Symptoms: Redness, inflammation, pain, swelling, and formation of pus-filled pockets (abscess) at the site of the infection. If fever and painful joints occur, this may be a sign of an infectious disease that is spreading throughout the body and a doctor must be seen at once.

Special Note:
Be Careful with Antibiotics

When used appropriately, antibiotics are effective for serious or life-threatening bacterial infections. Their indiscriminate use, however, is ill-advised. First, although they are often prescribed for such conditions, antibiotics do not work against viruses or inflammatory conditions. Second, they kill not only harmful bacteria, but also beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (mouth to anus) which can lead to digestive and intestinal problems (notably Candida albicans yeast overgrowth) if not remedied. Third, indiscriminate use of antibiotics has produced multiple-drug-resistant bacterial strains and is in danger of rendering antibiotics ineffective against life-threatening infections.

If you suspect you have a bacterial infection, ask your doctor to take a culture of saliva or tissues or fluids from the infected area. If it is a bacterial infection, samples of different antibiotics can be placed in the growing bacteria to determine which will be the most effective in killing that specific bacteria; this is called a sensitivity test. If you do take antibiotics, be sure to supplement with acidophilus during and after the course of treatment.

Self-Care Approaches

Diet:
Increase dietary garlic and unflavored yogurt. Increase diluted orange juice, apples and apple juice, grapes and grape juice, cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, plums, figs, cabbage, onion, kelp, and raw honey. During infection and recovery time, avoid refined sugar as this may depress natural immune response. Drink plenty of filtered water.

Nutritional Therapy:
According to Garry Gordon, M.D., the following can be effectively used as an antibiotic replacement, particularly if used at the first sign of any cold or flu or other infectious process: vitamin A (400,000 IU daily for five days), liquid garlic extract (up to two 4-ounce bottles a day) or the equivalent in high-quality garlic in capsules or tablets, and vitamin C to bowel tolerance. This protocol is to be used only under a physician’s guidance. The dosages are for an average 175-pound adult and should be scaled down proportionately according to we/ight. The vitamin A should be taken for a period of at least three days, but no more than five days. Caution: Vitamin A at such high doses can cause headaches in about 1% of those using it. Should this occur, either decrease the dose or use a natural remedy like feverfew or a homeopathic remedy for headaches.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) found in the oil of linseed, evening primrose, and certain fish, among other sources, also have antibacterial properties. Bromelain, an enzyme compound found in the pineapple plant, is an anti-inflammatory and has been shown to be as effective as antibiotics in treating pneumonia, bronchitis, kidney infection, and staph infection of the skin, among other infections.

Alan R. Gaby, M.D., has found that acute infections respond well to an intravenous injection of a “cocktail” composed of magnesium chloride hexahydrate, calcium glycerophosphate, hydroxocobalamin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), dexpanthenol, B complex, and vitamin C. This is a modification of the nutrient cocktail popularized by John Myers, M.D.

Aromatherapy:
For fungal infections, use cedarwood. For infected wounds, use frankincense, tea tree, patchouli.

Fasting: Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., suggests a water-only fast for 24-36 hours at the onset of any infection as it has a dramatic effect on the immune system, enhancing natural killer cells and other defensive immune activity. This is only true if the fast is a water-only regime. Caution: This is not appropriate for the very frail or very yo/ung unless supervised by an expert in these methods, such as a naturopathic or alternative physician.

Flower Essences:
Flower essences for accompanying emotional/mental states. Crab Apple; Rescue Remedy. Rescue Remedy Cream® on unbroken skin.

Herbs:
Herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal, and garlic can prevent and treat infection. In small amounts taken regularly, they boost resistance; lar/ger doses combat specific infections. Berberine, an alkaloid component of certain plants, notably goldenseal, Oregon grape, and barberry, is a strong antimicrobial. Goldenseal is one of nature’s most potent antibiotics that also stimulates immune response. Its effects have been demonstrated against Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, E. Coli, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, among others.

Echinacea can be taken internally as a tea or used externally as a poultice or wash on infectious sores. Echinacea has a broad spectrum of beneficial effects on the immune system, and has proven effective in treating infections in general, including colds, flu, upper respiratory infections, and urinary tract and genital infections.

Stress must be treated as it has a direct impact on immunity. In addition to working with a stress management program, use adaptogenic herbs such as Siberian ginseng. Also, select the appropriate herb(s) most suited for the particular sight of infection: garlic for the lungs, bearberry for bladder infections, myrrh topically for the skin.

Grapefruit seed extract is a multipurpose antibiotic for bacterial infections and can be applied topically or taken orally. Olive leaf extract has with antibacterial and antiviral properties; useful for a range of infections. Tea tree oil is an antiseptic that assists in fighting a broad range of infectious microorganisms and is one of the best skin disinfectants, helpful for acne and other skin infections.

Hydrotherapy:
Constitutional hydrotherapy (apply one to two times daily depending on severity of infection).

Juice Therapy:
Carrot, celery, beet, cantaloupe.

Professional Care
(The following therapies should only be provided by a qualified health professional.) Environmental Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Detoxification Therapy( May be indicated, depending on the person’s condition. Control the infection first.), and Oxygen Therapy (Ozone is a wide spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agent at concentrations that spare normal tissues).

To listen to my interview, scroll down the page till you see the link for Health on the Edge. The interview runs about 50 minutes, and I come in after the news update. I really enjoyed talking with David, and I think you’ll enjoy hearing all that we discussed too.

Books:
Big Fish by Daniel Wallace. I didn’t see the movie based on this book, but after reading it, I want to. A wonderful tale of a son’s coming to terms with his father’s life and death.

Sign Language of the Soul: A Handbook for Healing by Dale H. Schusterman, DC. This book offers a fascinating look at the inherent ability of the body to heal itself, and provides a unique self-care system for attuning your nervous system “to the place of health and wholeness within you.” This system was developed by Dr. Schusterman over a number of decades, in which he was also involved in his own journey of spiritual discovery, and I found this book to be an important contribution to our understanding of how healing occurs.

Reader Feedback

A number of readers have emailed me asking me for more information about the work I did with Dr. Robert Friedman, who claims to be a medical intuitive and energy healer. (I wrote about my experiences with Robert in previous issues of The Health Plus Letter.) I enjoyed my conversations with Robert very much, and in my initial session with him (conducted over the phone), I definitely experienced therapeutic benefit after he energetically worked on my neck and spine. But that’s where the benefits ended for me. Though he also claimed to have improved the energetic frequencies of most of my organs, I did not detect any discernable difference afterwards. As I wrote previously, the primary reason I chose to work with him related to my right shoulder and upper arm, which have limited range of movement these days because I’ve basically created some wear and tear due to all the time I spent writing and using my computer. Robert told me that the unresolved emotions stored in this are of my body had to do with being my parents’ “right-hand man” when I was growing up. He also said the physical cause of the restriction was due to a torn supraspinatus tendon, and readily admitted that he could not help me with it, so long as I continued to abide by my writing schedule. This diagnosis did not make sense to me, and I told Robert as much. To his cre/dit, he did not get defensive, simply said that that was what he was intuiting. Then he said the stress that caused the tear occurred last May. That intrigued me, because during March through May of last year, I worked 50-60 hour weeks, both typing up all the content for 1HealthyWorld and comprehensively revising a book on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (now out and available – more on it next issue). During that time, I did indeed have a lot of tension in my shoulders, neck, and upper back, so Robert’s timetable for when the event leading to my shoulder/upper arm restriction may be accurate. However, I still remain unconvinced that it’s the supraspinatus tendon that’s involved, since the restriction I experience occurs in the front of my shoulder, and the tendon runs along the back of the shoulder. I’ll find out for sure, eventually, but for n/o/w the experience is only mildly nagging and I’m not concerned about it.

Does this mean Robert’s assessment is incorrect? I don’t know yet. A number of readers contacted Robert when I first wrote about him (from what he told me, he received inquiries from around the world). So far, I’ve only heard from two of them, and in both cases they weren’t too impressed with their experiences with him. If any other readers would like to share their experiences with Robert, pro or con, I am very interested to hear from you. In the meantime, I remain appreciative of the time Robert spent with me, and overall remain impressed with the results of my first session with him. After that, however, my returns, as it were, were definitely diminishing.
