What’s New
This week, we continue our coverage of allergies, with a profile of an exciting therapy called NAET. Also in this issue is a simple self-test you can use to help determine if you are suffering from candidiasis (systemic yeast overgrowth), as well as the latest health news, and a recipe for a delicious and healthy dessert.
But first a word about email viruses, as well as the follow-up alert that is sent out each week notifying you that The Health Plus Letter has been sent.
In light of the recent surge in email viruses, I want to assure you that The Health Plus Letter is virus-free and that it is emailed from a server that contains antivirus software. Moreover, this newsletter will not contain any attached files, which is how email viruses are typically sent. So if you should ever receive an email from The Health Plus Letter that contains an attachment, don’t open it and delete it immediately, because it will not be from me.
Because of the large number of email viruses out there, most email providers use filters to eliminate spam email. Unfortunately, these filters all-too-often target certain words or phrases and automatically trash emails that contain them, even when they are not spam. I do my best to keep informed about this to ensure that all of my readers receive The Health Plus Letter each week, and the vast majority of you do without any problems. But since I cannot be certain week by week who might not be receiving it, I send out the follow-up alert to let everyone know that each new issue has been sent and providing a link to where it can be read online at 1HealthyWorld.com. This past week, a few readers emailed me to say they found the follow-up alert to be a nuisance. I apologize for that, but also have a suggestion. Since each follow-up email always has the same subject head, if you have already received the newsletter, simply delete the follow-up without bothering to open and read it. I hope you will bear with me on this one, and I thank you for your understanding.
You can email me at larry@1healthyworld.com.

What follows was reported on ABC Nightly News last week and also sent to me by my friend Rashid Buttar, D.O., a brilliant holistic physician located in North Carolina (see http://www.drbuttar.com). Shocking as this story is, it is only one of many, many incidents showcasing how out of control both our state and federal governments have become in meddling with our right to make our own choices when it comes to health care. Read on:
On The Run, Parents Hide Son To Avoid Chemotherapy
(August 29, 2003) - A 12-year-old boy remains in hiding with his mother while authorities in Utah battle to have him returned to undergo court-ordered chemotherapy to treat what they say is deadly bone cancer.
Daren and Barbara Jensen fled Utah with their son, Parker, on Aug. 8, after the state ordered that the cancer-stricken boy be placed in state custody so that he can receive chemotherapy.
On Aug. 15, Utah prosecutors filed kidnapping charges against the couple. Daren Jensen was arrested Aug. 16 in Idaho, where he is fighting extradition to Utah. The whereabouts of Parker and his mother are unknown.
The story began three months ago, when Parker was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a deadly type of bone cancer. Doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City said Parker needs chemotherapy, and that he has only a 5 percent chance of survival without it. A Salt Lake City court agreed, and ordered the parents to have the boy undergo the treatment.
But the boy's family disagreed. They question the accuracy of the test that led to his cancer diagnosis, said Parker's uncle, Tracy Jensen.
"Ewing's sarcoma normally appears in the bone, but Parker's was a tumor in the mouth," Jensen said. "The hospital wanted chemotherapy right away. But we wanted a second opinion. They wouldn't let us get one, and before you knew it, my brother and his family were on the run."
Rick Jaffe, the family lawyer, contends that life-and-death decisions, such as whether to undergo chemotherapy, should be made by a child's parents, not the state. The parents did allow Parker to undergo surgery to have the tumor removed, but they do not believe he needs chemotherapy at this point.
"There is no scientific evidence whatsoever that you need chemotherapy for this particular kind of basically mild cancer," Jaffe said. "All the evidence really relates to this full-blown bone involvement where you have very sick kids."
He said that the hospital and the state have interfered with the parents getting an objective second opinion to see if their belief that Parker has the mild type of the cancer is confirmed.
"They have the best intentions for Parker and want to figure out the exact treatment for this," Tracy Jensen said. "They want to sit down in an environment where they can talk about this. This is a very rare type of Ewing's sarcoma, which has manifested itself in the soft tissue in the mouth and they say it's a bone disease."
The Jensens have located a pediatric oncologist who will treat and evaluate Parker, Jaffe said.
"The problem is, we can't bring him to him, because as soon as we show up, the mother will be arrested and the child hauled off by force to Utah," the lawyer said.
He also said Parker appears healthy.
"I'm not a doctor, but he looks healthy. He looks normal," Jaffe said. "He doesn't look sick and he doesn't look like any cancer patient I have ever seen. He looks like a great normal kid with a normal energy level for a 12-year-old boy."
State Says It Wants to Protect Parker
The Utah Attorney General's Office says it is concerned about Parker's welfare, and that the state has every right to step in to protect a child.
"We are very concerned with the health of this y^ung boy and the surrounding issues of state power vs. parental responsibility," the office said in a statement. "Parents have a natural and fundamental right to direct the medical care of their child,” but if in making that decision they place the child's very life in substantial danger, the Supreme Court has determined that the State has an oblig^tion to step in. In other words, a child has a fundamental right, independent of a parent's wishes, to live."
Tracy Jensen says the family fears that Parker will only get worse, and may even die, if he is subjected to chemotherapy.
"Chemotherapy is a horrible and painful thing to deal with, especially for a child," he said. "It may also leave him sterile and stunt his growth. We want other options. And we fear it will take him to the brink of death, and we don't want that, especially when there is no evidence that his cancer is what the doctors say it is."
Parents Barred From Hospital
The charges against the parents have complicated the issue, Jaffe said. If his mother tries to bring Parker to any hospital, she will be arrested, he said.
"They [the parents] are fugitives from the law and they will be handcuffed, and Parker will be taken back to Utah and undergo chemotherapy," Jaffe said.
The family would like Parker to take genetic and blood tests, Tracy Jensen said. They do not want to rush and have chemotherapy if there is no evidence the cancer is still there.
Jaffe says the best solution for everyone would be for the police to drop the charges and allow the family to return to Utah so that Parker could undergo other tests at another hospital.
[I think Dr. Buttar’s comment on this says it best: “This is outrageous! What has our world come to????” If we don’t wake up as a nation and once and for all demand complete medical freedom from our elected officials and government agencies, then more and more of these unsavory events are likely to happen. As it is, this is far from an isolated case.]
Health News and Commentary
Scientists Turn to the Herb Sage to Combat Alzheimer’s
Researchers at the universities of New Castle and Northumbria in England have found that the herb sage protects a key chemical in the brain that is destroyed by the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the same researchers, after reviewing the works of herbalists written 400 years ago, discovered that sage oil extract was used even then to achieve “a marked improvement in the memory capabilities of people.”
"This research does have serious implications for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, as it will inform drug research and development," lead researcher Nicola Tildesley said in a statement, noting sage has no side effects. "This proves how valuable the work by old herbalists is, and they shouldn't just be ignored because they were writing centuries ago."

[Comment: It’s nice to see modern science giving serious consideration to botanical medicine. It will be even nicer when scientists pay more attention to the complete properties of herbs instead of focusing so much on isolating so-called active ingredients that can then be synthesized and patented as expensive drugs, since practitioners of botanical medicine (the oldest type of medicine in the world) emphasize that it is not only the active ingredients that prove beneficial, but the synergistic interaction of all of the components found in medicinal plants.]
Frequent and Steady Exercise Found to Provide Benefits Against Diabetes for People Over 40
“Frequent and regular workouts are required by people over age 40 who use aerobic exercise to prevent or control diabetes if they want to get the full benefit of that exercise,” according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the August issue of the journal Diabetes.
Researchers who conducted the study found that ‘[m]iddle-aged and older people can't sustain increased insulin sensitivity produced by aerobic exercise... A decline in insulin sensitivity is normal as people age and that reduced insulin sensitivity makes them more prone to developing diabetes.”
To read more on this story, see http://snurl.com/27be.
[Comment: Along with proper diet and good sleep, regular exercise is absolutely essential for achieving and maintaining optimal health, and not just for pre-diabetics and diabetics.]
One in Every 20 Drug Prescriptions Filled at Pharmacies Contains Errors
According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, one of every 20 prescription drugs filled at pharmacies contains an err^r, which can lead to potentially serious adverse side effects and even death.
"The biggest mistakes are made by the prescribers [physicians]," says Larry Sasich, a pharmacist and research analyst for the Public Citizen Health Research Group, but consumers can also be at fault by failing to pay attention to drug dosage and even the name of the drugs they are prescribed.
To read more on this story, see http://snurl.com/27bc.
[Comment: Properly prescribed prescription drugs kill, at minimum, over 100,000 Americans, and cause serious side effects in 1-2 million more patients each and every year. (According to the FDA itself, these figures only account for reported incidents, which the agency estimates may be under-reported by a factor of 10 to 100!) The errors mentioned above significantly compounds this problem.]
Bush Administration Exempts Power Plants from Clean Air Act Provisions
Last week I mentioned how the Bush administration was seriously considering new regulations that would create major loopholes in the Clean Air Act. One day later (last Wednesday the regulations became law when they were signed by Marianne Horinko, acting administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The new regulations will provide loopholes for an estimated 17,000 power plants, factories, and refineries nationwide which, according to environmental watchdog groups, will be allowed “to continue emitting millions of tons of pollutants that cause health problems for people living downwind, particularly in the Northeast.”
"If allowed to stand, this flagrantly illegal rule will ensure that, under the watch of the Bush administration, Americans will breathe dirtier air, contract more respiratory disease and suffer more environmental degradation caused by air pollution," said New York State Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, who threatened to sue the Bush administration, along with other states, to have the new regulations repealed.
"EPA is throwing in the towel to industry just as its own enforcement of the existing rules has proven successful in the courts," said John Kirkwood, president of the American Lung Association. "EPA policy should be based on protecting public health, not bolstering industry profits."

[Comment: Like I wrote last week, this is par for the course for the Bush administration, which so far has exhibited a total disregard for environmental safety. I’m hopeful AG Spitzer and others will prevail in reversing this measure.]

A Self-Test for Detecting Candidiasis (Candida)
A few days ago I received an email from one of my readers named Pat, a former long-term sufferer of chronic fatigue syndrome and systemic yeast overgrowth (candidiasis). Today, Pat is healthy and attributes a good part of her recovery to a product called ThreeLac, a proprietary blend of three strains of probiotics (healthy bacteria). I am unfamiliar with the product, but was impressed by what I read about it when I did an Internet search. In the process, I also discovered this simple self-test:
Upon awakening, before you put anything in your mouth, fill a clear glass with water then spit into it. Initially, your saliva will float at the top of the glass. Look at the water every 15 minutes for up to one hour. If you have yeast overgrowth, you will see string- or leg-like streamers extending downward from the saliva floating on the top or the water. Or your saliva will become “cloudy” and start to sink to the bottom of the glass, or else cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If none of these things occur after at least one hour, most likely you do not have candidiasis.
For more on candidiasis, see Dr. Robert Ivker’s holistic protocol for treating the condition, which was featured in the first four issues of The Health Plus Letter (available at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ezine).
For more information about ThreeLac, Pat suggests calling a company named Health Plus and More (no relation to this newsletter but I like the name!) at (888) 847-3352. I will be investigating the product firsthand and will let you know what I think of it in a future issue.
NAET: A Revolutionary Approach for Eliminating Allergies
(I wrote the following article a few years ago. Since that time, I have heard from increasing numbers of holistic physicians about how effective this treatment is for both detecting and completely resolving allergies, so I am reprinting it here.)
According to Devi S. Nambudripad, D.C., L.Ac., R.N., Ph.D., "There is hardly any human disease or condition in which allergic factors are not involved. Any organ, group of organs, or portion of the body, may be involved and the allergic responses may show great variations." Between 30 to 40 million Americans are known to suffer from allergies of some sort, but Dr. Nambudripad estimates that an additional 50 million or more have hidden allergies they aren't aware of. "They may have other symptoms that keep them going from doctor to doctor, trying all sorts of different remedies without getting any relief, not realizing that the underlying cause of their condition is an allergic reaction," she says. Among the conditions she claims can be due to allergies are gastrointestinal disorders, migraine, hyperactivity, arthritis, asthma, anxiety, depression, backache, and chronic fatigue.
Nambudripad's comments may initially seem implausible, yet allergies have for many years been viewed by practitioners of holistic medicine as a potentially critical factor in the onset of a wide range of illnesses. Typically, treatments for allergy sufferers include drugs, the avoidance of all allergic triggers, and dietary changes (some of them very rigorous and lasting for months), along with immune-enhancing measures such as nutritional and h^rbal supplementation, homeopathy and acupuncture. But even when the treatments prove successful, patients usually have to diligently monitor and/or avoid their exposure to the known foods or environmental triggers that caused their illness in the first place. Such vigilance also tends to have to last throughout the rest of the patient’s life.
Nambudripad claims to offer a more effective and permanent answer to this problem through a procedure she developed, called the Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET). According to her, NAET not only makes it easier to determine the various allergens that may be playing a hidden role in disease, it also allows patients to continue to use or be exposed to the implicated substances without further suffering. Having used NAET for nearly 20 years at her clinic in Buena Park, California, Nambudripad has treated thousands of patients. "I haven't had any failures so far," she says. In addition, she has trained thousands doctors from across the U.S. and Canada and around the world in the use of NAET, and continues to offer seminars to health professionals interested in learning her methods. Many who take her training practice NAET full time, while others combine it with their regular practice. About half of the practitioners are "medical doctors, traditional medical allergists and environmental specialists," with chiropractors and acupuncturists also showing strong interest. "We are open to all medically licensed doctors," Nambudripad says, "and once they receive my training they can administer NAET to their patients very efficiently."
Among the people who praise Nambudripad's work is Sandra Denton, M.D. of Anchorage, Alaska, herself a leading allergy specialist. In her foreword to Say Goodbye To Illness, one of three books authored by Nambudripad, Dr. Denton relates how NAET cured her of chronic fatigue syndrome and an attack of asthma that left her hospitalized. "As Dr. Devi began testing me . . . I was shocked to find that I was reacting to many vitamins and minerals ... and other essential nutrients of my every day diet," Denton writes. Nambudripad eliminated Denton's reactions to the nutrients and within nine days Denton was restored to health and able to return to work.
The Origins of NAET
Reviewing some of Nambudripad's case histories, one is quickly struck by how insidious allergies can be and how effective a treatment NAET potentially is. Among the health conditions Nambudripad has successfully treated using NAET are: anxiety, addictions, severe and chronic indigestion, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, asthma, genital yeast infection, hypoglycemia, chronic headache, kidney infection, impaired urination, nausea and chest pain. The range of potential allergens is quite vast, Nambudripad explains. "Almost anything can cause an allergic reaction. In my every day practice I see patients who are allergic to food, drinks, water, especially tap water, clothing, plants, chemicals, vitamins, vaccines, furniture, the cars they drive, plastics, metals, cosmetics, fingernail polish, even wedding rings." In each case, as soon as the offending substance was identified and NAET applied, the accompanying symptoms began to resolve themselves.
Perhaps the most dramatic example of the role allergies can play in compromising health lies with Nambudripad herself. "I was sick from the very beginning of my life," she relates. From early childhood, she suffered from multiple illnesses, including arthritis, bronchitis, sinusitis, migraine headache, chronic exhaustion, insomnia and eczema. "I had to live on a special diet that my parents oversaw, and that's how I survived. Then, when I came to America from India, I started eating health food because my husband was also eating it, due to his own health problems. The result was that I really became crippled, almost bed-ridden. I had almost no energy and was in constant pain."
None of the physicians she consulted with were able to help her, until finally she met an acupuncturist, who tested her for allergies. "He helped me to understand that my illness was due to allergies, which at first I didn't believe. I thought I had all these other diseases." The acupuncturist told her to eat only white rice and that if she did, her health would improve. "So I tried the diet and within one week I started feeling better. My pain started going away, along with my headaches and arthritis, and that gave me some hope." She lived on that diet for three and a half years, during which time she also began her medical training.
Then one day Nambudripad ate a carrot, setting the stage for her discovery of NAET. The carrot caused an immediate reaction of faintness. By then trained in acupuncture, she gave herself a treatment to keep herself from going into shock. "When I finished the treatment I found that I was much better than ever before," she recounts, "even though some of the carrot was still in my hand. Immediately I associated the electromagnetic field of the carrot being within my body's electromagnetic field and realized that somehow the acupuncture treatment had halted the reaction I was having. I was no longer allergic to carrots any more. I ate the rest of the carrot and didn't have a reaction."
Because of this experience, Nambudripad went on to treat herself for most of the other substances she discovered she was allergic to, and today they no longer trouble her. "Except for chemicals," she laughs. "They can still get me because there are so many types, and if I haven't treated a particular one, when I'm exposed to it, it can still cause a reaction. But the reactions are very mild and I can instantly get out of them."
How NAET Works
The key to how NAET works lies in its ability to retrain the patient's brain and nervous system to no longer react to the substances he or she is allergic to. This is a radically different approach than the more common method of avoiding allergy triggers for life, once they've been detected.
Part of NAET's success also lies with the body's energy pathways, or meridians, as they are known by acupuncturists. "When you are exposed to a substance you are allergic to," Nambudripad explains, "Your brain and meridian system interprets the substance, whatever it may be, as being harmful to you. For other people, the substance may be harmless, but for your system it's toxic. As a result, your nervous system freezes up in order to defend against it. This, in turn, creates blockages in the meridians. So long as the allergy remains, over time, the blockages lead to further imbalances in the way your body functions and the result is disease."
Allergies themselves, according to Nambudripad, "are a response of the immune system to foreign substances around you, or their energy fields. This response triggers different reactions at different times. For instance, one day the reaction might manifest as leg pain and the next time, like a headache. It depends upon which area of the body is the one where the energy is blocked. The offending substance creates a disturbance in the body's meridian system and that blocks the body's flow of energy, creating imbalance. Eventually symptoms show up and you get sick. Reversing that process is what I do with NAET. But first you have to know what substances the patient is actually allergic to."
NAET practitioners accomplish this through the use of Applied Kinesiology. Patients hold the suspected allergenic substance while the practitioner tests the strength of certain muscles. If an allergy exists, the muscles will exhibit weakness that improves once the patient is no longer in contact with the offending substance.
Once the allergens have been determined, the next step in NAET is to "reprogram the patient's nervous system to not react to them." Nambudripad accomplishes this by having the patients continue to hold the substance they are allergic to while she treats them with acupuncture. She claims this reprograms her patients' nervous systems to no longer react to the substances they were previously allergic to. "Because your energy pathways are unblocked while you are holding the substance during the acupuncture treatment, your body stops reacting to it. This, in turn, leads your brain to stop viewing it as harmful." Once the treatment is complete, patients are then instructed to avoid exposure to the substance for 25 to 30 hours, after which time they should no longer cause an allergic reaction.
"NAET works by reprogramming the nervous system," states Eleanor Chin, D.C. echoing Nambudripad's claims. A chiropractor with a background in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, Dr. Chin has made NAET a part of her practice for the last seven years. "The way NAET works," she says, "is that it tells the nervous system and the brain to remain open in all of their energy channels in the presence of the allergenic substance. It does this by stimulating the specific acupuncture points associated with the blockages of energy. And in conjunction with that, if there are emotional components that the brain has associated with the substance, we also clear those."
One of Dr. Chin's case histories illustrates how potent a therapy NAET can be. One of her former chiropractic patients recently came to her after suffering from excruciating lower back pain for six weeks. "The reason she didn't seek my help right away was because the pain felt like what she had experienced some years earlier when she had kidney stones," Dr. Chin explains. "At first, she went to an M.D. and he concurred that the pain was most likely kidney-related. So she went to the hospital and they did a number of procedures and nothing helped. Finally, they decided that she should come back for exploratory surgery. That's when she came to see me." Dr. Chin treated her chiropractically, "but it didn't make a whole lot of difference." Then she asked the woman what she might have done six weeks earlier before the pain occurred. "She told me that she'd had cosmetic eyelid surgery," Dr. Chin says. "This led me to suspect a possible allergic reaction to the Novocaine that was used as her anesthesia." Using muscle testing while having the woman hold an ampule of Novocaine, Dr. Chin determined that there was indeed a connection. "I used NAET to treat her for the allergic reaction to Novocaine, and later that night much of her pain had subsided. She came back in two days and after the second treatment all her pain was gone."
Not all NAET treatments bring such swift relief, however. For food allergies, Dr. Nambudripad estimates that most allergic responses will cease after 15 to 20 treatments, usually received over a period of once a week. "After that, most patients can eat a wide variety of food without reactions," she explains. "If they want to go into more detail to treat other substances they are allergic to, it may take longer. I've had many patients who only needed 10 to 12 visits and then I don’t ever see them again because they are doing fine. It depends on what they are allergic to, the condition of their immune system, and their lifestyle." Overall, NAET has been shown to bring complete and permanent relief from allergies in approximately 85% of all people who receive it.
It's important to stress that the positive responses attributed to NAET have until recently been entirely anecdotal. That is changing, however. Dr. Nambudripad has completed the first in a series of projected double-blind studies showcasing NAET's efficacy in treating allergies. "It was a milk allergy study and is ready to be published," she relates, adding that further studies are planned. In the meantime, a growing number of physicians are heralding NAET's merits, and receiving training in its use.

Responding to Dr. Hanley’s article from last week, Ardis writes:
“I had the same experience as Geena [one of Dr. Hanley’s patients] back in the 80's. I was very active, in very good physical condition. All of a sudden, I was having problems. My doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, gave me shots, salves, heat treatments. Nothing worked. Then I decided this can't be and did some research in the library-how I came up with the information was God's leading. I found out that if I ate only rice for three days, my system would clear out and my joints would feel much better. Then I added one food to my meal of rice. When I added potatoes, within 30 minutes of eating them, my hip swelled (internally) and the joint froze up. When I continued the rice and cleared out the potatoes, I added another food and found that some citrus fruits irritated the joint. I also found out that eating too many carrots and tomatoes caused the same problem. Today I can eat all of these foods but in moderation...as your article said. And I know when I have had too much of any of them.”
Ardis’s experience exemplifies what can happen when we become proactive and not only take responsibility for our health, but dedicated ourselves to finding answers for our health problem. Knowledge is power, and sharing that knowledge with you is the main purpose of this newsletter and 1HealthyWorld.com. But it’s up to all of us, like Ardis did, to take the initiative and put that knowledge to use.

http://www.madnation.cc - Mad Nation describes itself as “People Working Together for Social Justice and Human Rights in Mental Health,” and there is a lot of valuable and informative material housed here.
http://www.bukopharma.de/English/english.htm - the English version website of BUKO Pharma-Kampagne, an independently financed watchdog organization based in Germany that is dedicated to exposing the corruption and misdeed committed by the pharmaceutical industry. I found out about them by reading The Constant Gardener, mentioned below.
Books: Single & Single and The Constant Gardener, both by John Le Carre. I’ve long been a fan of Le Carre (real name David Cornwall) and read these two books back-to-back last week. Single & Single is a gripping tale of high finance, the Russian mafia, illegal drug and arms smuggling woven around an estranged son’s attempt to redeem the sins of his father. The Constant Gardener is a no-holds barred portrayal of the greed, depravity (including brutal murders), and conspiratorial collusion with government ministers that two interlocking and fictitious pharmaceutical giants engage in to silence the fact that their latest wonder drug is in fact fatal. Sordid as the tale is, Le Carre writes in his Afterward, “As my journey through the pharmaceutical jungle progressed, I came to realize that, by comparison with the reality, my story was as tame as a holiday postcard.” Sadly, he’s right.
(To read an essay Le Carre wrote on the subject, In Place of Nations, originally published in The Nation on April 9, 2001, visit: http://www.madnation.cc/issues/bigpharma/lecarre.htm)
