Health News and Commentary

Bush Administration Seeks to Shelter Big Pharma From Lawsuits

In the latest in a series of initiatives that would benefit vested interests at the expense of the lay public, “The Bush Administration has been going to court to block lawsuits by consumers who say they have been injured by prescription drugs and medical devices,” the New York Times reports. The rationale provided by the Bush Administration for this action—which is clearly at odds with views on the subject advanced by the federal government before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1997—is its contention that consumers should not be allowed to recover damages from injuries directly related to prescription drugs and medical devices due to the fact that they were approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the Administration, “Allowing consumers to sue manufacturers would ‘undermine public health’ and interfere with federal regulation of drugs and devices, by encouraging ‘lay judges and juries to second-guess’ experts at the FDA.” Critics of the Administration’s unusual stance charge that it is seeking to protect drug companies instead of the lay public.

Source: Pear, Robert. “In a Shift, Bush Moves to Block Medical Suits.” New York Times, July 25, 2004

[Comment: The reasoning behind the Bush Administration’s action on this issue is about as Orwellian as you can get! Not to mention wholly illogical. Despite the acknowledged fact that Big Pharma’s drugs alone kill over 100,000 Americans each and every year when properly prescribed (and annually cause serious to over 2 million others), in essence what’s being said h/e/r/e is: “The FDA approved the drugs/devices, therefore they are safe because the FDA said so, and the FDA cannot be second-guessed, ergo Big Pharma should have a Get Out Of Jail F/r/e/e Card no matter what. To allow for anything else would be to seriously undermine America’s health and, far more importantly, Big Pharma’s pocketbook, and we can’t have that.”

This entire issue would be laughable were it not such a blatant, despicable give-back to an industry that is both well-represented within the Bush Administration and which donates heavily to its re-election coffers. Which doesn’t mean I exempt the Democrats from criticism on this issue. I don’t, given the amount of financial incentives Big Pharma provides them with too. Aside from superficial issues h/e/r/e and there just to keep the respective party faithful happy, I continue to maintain that at its heart the current two-party system speaks with one face when it comes to kowtowing to corporate manna.]

Magnet Therapy in Relation to Health

[The following article is excerpted from the eBook Burton Goldberg’s Definitive Guide to Magnet Therapy, written by Dr. William Philpott, one of the world’s foremost authorities on magnet therapy. To learn how to effectively use magnets as a self-care approach for improving your health, visit
http://www.1healthyworld.com/ebooks/Magnet-Book-Info.cfm.]

The human body produces subtle magnetic fields that are generated by the chemical reactions within the cells and the ionic currents of the nervous system. Neurons are electromagnetic positive and their axons (the branch of the neuron that conducts nerve impulses away) are electromagnetic negative, so that the nervous system functions on a direct current basis. Recently, scientists have discovered that external magnetic fields can also affect the body’s functioning in both positive and negative ways, and this observation has led to the development of magnetic field therapy.

Humans need both internal and external sources of magnetic fields for survival. Internally, the human body makes mineral (magnetite) crystals that can be magnetized. These magnetized crystals, containing iron and manganese, are found in the pineal gland (located in the center of the brain), ethmoid magnetic organ (a born forming the nasal cavity), and neurons. These organs and structures in the body are actually permanent static field magnets that generate magnetic fields. Cells have paramagnetic fields centered in the DNA, produced by the biochemical processing of nutrients, water, and oxygen.

An external magnetic field can also magnetize the crystals produced in the body. Physiologists agree that humans receive approximately 30% of their energy from external sources. The body also absorbs electromagnetic energy from the environment through oxygen and water, which are paramagnetic (capable of being magnetized). Also, blood flowing in the body is flowing through the earth’s magnetic field, which produces electromotive energy. These sources of magnetic fields can influence body function. A negative magnetic field can favorably affect cell function, pH level (acidity), hormone production, enzyme activity, energy production from ATP, healing, and growth. Thus, internal and external negative magnetic fields can serve as systemic defenses against disease.

(Note: ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, a substance found in all cells, particularly muscle, and responsible for energy. When enzymes split ATP, energy is released from the high-energy phosphate bonds. This bond can be instantly split on demand whenever energy is required to run cellul^r functions. ATP is often called the cell’s energy currency because it can be continually spent and remade again in a matter of minutes.)

Many people are becoming aware that our external sources of magnetism are currently dwindling. Kyoichi Nakagawa, M.D., references authorities who have demonstrated that the earth’s magnetic field has diminished in half over the last 500 years. Nakagawa points out that modern technology, such as trains, cars, and metal buildings, absorb the earth’s magnetic field and cause a loss of gauss strength. This interferes with the human energy system because electromagnetic induction does not occur at an optimum level. It seems logical that the human body is adapted to a higher gauss strength than that of the earth’s current magnetic field, and thus human deficiencies are n/o/w emerging.

After more than 20 years of research, Nakagawa has concluded that a magnetic field deficiency syndrome exists as a result of this weakened magnetism. The symptoms of this syndrome include: stiffness in the shoulders, back, and neck; chest pains; headache and heaviness of the head; dizziness; insomnia; habitual constipation; and general lassitude. The long-term biological consequences of magnetic deficiency include the following: the development of acute symptoms and chronic degenerative diseases; the loss of normal healing ability; and the unsuccessful defense against infectious microorganisms and environmental toxins. In particular, when the body’s supply of magnetism is deficient, the oxidoreductase enzymes do not function properly. These enzymes are needed for the following: the reversal of free-radicals, hydrogen peroxide, aldehydes, alcohols, and acids back to molecular oxygen; and the maintenance of the pH at a normal alkaline state.

Magnets as a Medical Therapy

Electromagnetic energy and the human body have a valid and important interrelationship. Magnetic field therapy can be used in both diagnosing and treating physical and emotional disorders. This process has been recognized to relieve symptoms and may, in some cases, retard the cycle of new disease. Magnets and electromagnetic therapy devices are today being used to relieve symptoms and reverse degenerative diseases, eliminate pain, facilitate the healing of broken bones, and counter the effects of stress.

The use of magnets and electrical devices to generate controlled magnetic fields has many medical applications, and has proven to be one of the most effective means for diagnosing human illness and disease. For example, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is replacing X-ray diagnosis because it is safer and more accurate, and magnetoencephalography is replacing electroencephalography (EEG) as the preferred technique for recording the brain’s electrical activity.

In 1974, physicist Albert Roy Davis, Ph.D., noted that positive and negative magnetic polarities have different effects upon biological systems. He found that magnets could be used to kill cancer cells in animals, and could also be used in the treatment of arthritis, infertility, and chronic diseases related to aging. He concluded that negative magnetic fields have a beneficial effect on living organisms, whereas positive magnetic fields are detrimental.

The negative pole calms neurons and encourages rest, relaxation, and sleep. When sufficiently high in gauss strength, it can even produce general anesthesia. And because it is neuron calming, it has been successfully used in the control of neurosis, psychosis, seizures, addictive withdrawal, and movement disorders. A negative magnetic field consistently produces a predictable, long-term healing response, because only this field can ultimately relieve stress or injury. The body itself always responds with negative magnetic field energy to counter any stressor. The negative magnetic field counteracts stress by the following mechanisms: normalization of pH, correction of cellul^r edema, and release of molecular oxygen.

In contrast, the positive pole has a stressful effect on the body. With a prolonged exposure, it interferes with metabolic functioning, produces acidity, reduces cellul^r oxygen, and encourages the spread of latent microorganisms. A positive magnetic field excites or stimulates neurons. The higher the gauss strength of the positive pole, the higher the level of stimulation. In fact, a sufficiently high positive magnetic field can even evoke seizures and precipitate psychosis in those so predisposed.

“Scientifically designed, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, however, have not been done to substantiate the claims of there being different effects between positive and negative magnetic poles,” says John Zimmerman, Ph.D., President of the Bio-Electro-Magnetics Institute. “But numerous anecdotal, clinical observations suggest that such differences are real and do exist. Clearly, scientific research is needed to substantiate these claims.”

Self-Care Tips for Preventing and Managing Tendinitis

Definition: A tendon is a fibrous chord that attaches a muscle to a bone or a muscle to another muscle. Inflammation can occur to the tendon itself (tendinitis) or to the lining of the tendon called the tendinous sheath (tenosynovitis). Inflammation usually occurs to both simultaneously. If the muscle that attaches to the tendon is chronically overloaded through overuse or abuse (trauma), the tendon attachment to the bone becomes irritated, causing what is called a periosteal pain point. If this condition continues, the tendon itself becomes inflamed.

Symptoms: The tendons that are involved are usually very painful and tender to the touch and are painful on motion of the involved joint. Often the joint motion becomes restricted because of the pain and the abnormal changes to the tendons themselves that affect movement. The pain can become very severe depending on the degree of inflammation. Very severe pain may radiate to the joints above and below this joint. The pain may affect daily life and make sleep difficult when the joint is moved during movements while sleeping. The involved tendons often have a “creaking” quality to them due to “friction rubs” from the inflammation itself, and may become swollen because of the inflammation or due to some fluid accumulation. Sometimes, calcium becomes deposited in the area, or the swollen tendon sheath puts extra pressure on where it inserts into the bone, so that the bone enlarges at that site in response to this chronic pressure.

Occurrence: Very common in many individuals. More common in middle-aged and older individuals due to decreased circulation in the tendons associated with repeated microtrauma. The most common cause of tendinitis is repeated or extreme trauma, excessive (not usual) exercise, and strain. Certain systemic diseases have a higher incidence of tendinitis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disorders, gout, Reiter’s syndrome (an inflammatory syndrome), when blood cholesterol levels are excessively high (hyperlipoproteinemia, Type 11), and in younger women with certain sexually transmitted diseases.

Special Notes: The most common areas to get tendinitis are the shoulder capsule (subdeltoid bursitis), the tendons of the big thumb (de Quervain’s disease), and the hip capsule (trochanteric bursitis). Tendinitis and bursitis are really interchangeable terms as bursa are located near tendons.

Treatment needs to involve immobilization (splinting of the involved part), compresses with cold or heat (whatever seems to help, which varies between individuals), agents to reduce pain locally and systemically (orally and topically), and therapeutic exercise, which should increase as joint becomes better and is able to tolerate increased movement.

Self-Care Approaches

Diet:
Avoidance of the members of the nightshade family of plants (white potato, tomato, eggplant, all peppers except black, and tobacco); if restricted for a long time, this may be effective. Assessment and treatment of food allergies is imperative, as inflammation may be aggravated by food allergies in many people.

Nutritional Therapy: The following nutrients have been shown to provide benefit for tendonitis:  Vitamin B6, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, Copper orally (2-4 mg daily), Manganese, Bromelain, Essential fatty acids, Cod liver oil (one tablespoon, one to two hours before meals), D-phenylalanine and/or calcium/magnesium (to help with pain), Vitamin E, and Selenium.

Flower Essences:Rescue Remedy Cream®

Herbs:Combine equal parts of the tinctures of willow bark, cramp bark, and prickly ash and take one teaspoon of this mixture three times a day.

Homeopathy:Aconite, Thuja, Ruta grav., Belladonna, Apis mel.

Hydrotherapy:Contrast application (apply one to three times daily). If acute, use an ice pack (apply 20 minutes out of each hour for the first 24-36 hours). Epsom salt b^th (several tablespoons of Epsom salts per bath; soak for 25-30 minutes, then rinse and rub down with hot olive oil; once a week).

Osteopathy:According to Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., if the tendinitis relates to chronic overload or misuse of muscles, then relaxing and stretching these muscles reduces the stress on the tendon. Osteopathic muscle energy methods can usually be safely used at home in a way that achieves this goal. The most successful method uses yoga-type stretches following mild painless contractions of the involved muscle.

Topical Treatment:Rest the injured area and elevate above the level of the heart. Salt and vinegar therapy for stiff joints, sprains, inflammation. Soak several layers of gauze or muslin with apple cider vinegar, then place coarse, kosher salt thickly on the gauze and wrap around affected area. Loosening ti/ght tendons and joints. Rub iodized salt moistened with apple cider vinegar on affected area twice a week. Be sure it is not too liquid. Mullein hot packs. Boil three to four fresh mullein leaves in water for three minutes. Place over joint, wrap with a hot moist towel, then dry towel. Leave in place for 20 minutes, three times a day.

Professional Care

The following therapies have all been shown to provide benefit for tendonitis, but should only be provided by a qualified health professional: Acupuncture, Bodywork, Chiropractic, Craniosacral Therapy, Energy Medicine, Magnetic Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, Osteopathy, and Prolotherapy.

http://www.chetday.com/catspurrcd.shtml - This website is the home of the Cat’s Purr, a newly developed CD developed by my friend and fellow health journalist Chet Day. Chet has spent a number of years researching the benefits of guided imagery, mind/body medicine, and sound technology to improve health. All of this led to the creation of his Cat’s Purr CD, which features the sounds of his purring cat overlaid with classical music, the healing sounds of nature, and binaural beat technology. I’ve been experimenting with the CD for a number of weeks, listening to it with headphones, and the results are consistently relaxing. I often find myself also flooded with waves of creative insight. I commend Chet for this product and am happy to recommend it. (Note: I derive no financial benefits for doing so.)

Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting by Lynne Grabhorn.
This book explains why it’s our feelings, not our thoughts, that attract the conditions of our lives, and in a very down-to-earth manner, explains what we can do to start to consistently create the experiences we most want for ourselves. I’ve only been applying the techniques Grabhorn shares for a week or so, but the positive results are already obvious.

That’s it for this week.
