What’s New
Happy New Year! I wish each and every one of you a healthy, prosperous and joy-filled 2004 as we begin our second year together. I’ve a lot planned for the weeks and months ahead and look forward to sharing it with you soon.
In this issue, I’m providing a number of self-care tips for managing colds and flu, or avoiding them altogether, culled from the information I’ve received over the years from a variety of leading holistic practitioners. I also comment on the recent proposed ban on the herbal supplement ephedra.
And you’ll find below an interesting insider’s view of how news stories are selected and spun in the article "News Hype" written by friend Lisa Bonnice, who worked for a major cable news network for a number of years, following her stint as my research editor when I was preparing the 1st edition of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide. Lisa is the author of Addressing the Goo, a fascinating look at the metaphysical aspects involved in gaining and losing wei/ght. To find out more about that, visit her website: http://www.addressingthegoo.com.
This issue also continues my tribute to my sister Andrea with the 8th installment of The Power of A Human Spirit, as well as the latest health news and commentary.

Health News and Commentary
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Announces Planned Ban of Ephedra
This was the big news story last week, covered ad nauseam in all major U.S. media following the press conference held by FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan and House and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, in which they announced their intention to ban all wei/ght loss and energy-promoting supplements that contain ephedra within 60 days. The action follows the deaths of 155 people linked to purported use of the herb (also called ma huang), most notably professional baseball player Steve Bechler last February. Three states - New York, Illinois, and California - have already banned the herb.
While the ban isn't immediate, the FDA has already informed 62 companies that make or sell ephedra that "we intend to shut you down," McClellan said. "Any responsible manufacturer and retailer should stop selling these products as soon as possible"
[Comment: First of all, in my opinion, the manufacturers of wei/ght loss and energy supplements that included ephedra brought this ban upon themselves, since the herb historically has not been used for those purposes. For this reason, the FDA also announced that it will exempt practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine who use it in their practice to treat asthma, colds, and other respiratory conditions.
There is no question that certain herbs, when used improperly, can be dangerous, even life-threatening. So, on the surface, the FDA’s action seems both reasonable and in the public’s best interest. Would that this was all there was to this story! But there’s more.
First of all, of the 155 deaths attributed to ephedra use, only two can definitively be attributed to the herb. In the 153 other cases, including Bechler’s, multiple factors other than ephedra clearly could have been at fault. Even so, two deaths are not to be ignored.
But why is the FDA so hellbent to take ephedra off the market, when it continually turns a blind eye to the well over 100,000 deaths that are directly attributable to the various pharmaceutical drugs it has approved when the drugs are properly prescribed? (As just one small example, soon after Viagra was approved by the FDA, some 60 men died as a direct consequence of using it. To this day, the FDA has done nothing about this, allowing Viagra to go on to become one of the top selling drugs in the world.) Also, if ephedra is indeed so dangerous, then why does the FDA not ban its synthetic version, ephedrine, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cold and flu medications? Hint: Because ephedrine is a patented substance, whereas ephedra isn’t. Which is the real reason the FDA exempted the use of ephedra for respiratory conditions.
Moreover, since most supplement manufacturers have already voluntarily eliminated ephedra from their wei/ght loss and stimulant products, was there really a need for the FDA to take such a hardline stance against the industry? Not on the surface. But if you look a little closer, a deeper reason appears. Note the following comment by Tommy Thompson during the press conference: "We have a tremendous burden of proof in order to take supplements off of the market," he said, referring to the 1994 DSHEA law that would be overturned is the Durbin bill (see Medical Freedom Alert above) should ever be passed. Thompson added that federal law makes it very difficult for health officials to curb sal/es of dietary supplements that seem dangerous, far harder than it is to curb risky drugs, and stated his desire to have Congress change that.
That, I believe, is what this is all about - finding a way to erode DSHEA so that the FDA can once and for all oversee all nutritional supplements that come to market. If Thompson and the FDA truly cared about public safety, they would be insisting that the pharmaceutical industry drastically overhaul its ways of doing business, banning many drugs in the process.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.]
Self-Care Tips for Managing and Avoiding Colds and Flu
It being the middle of the cold and flu season in the U.S., what follows is a sampling of proven self-care approaches for preventing and recovering from both conditions.
Both colds and flu are commonly caused by viruses. But it is not exposure to the viruses themselves that causes the illnesses to take hold, but the health of the body’s immune system. As noted naturopathic physician and author Michael T. Murray, N.D., points out, "People who suffer more than two colds a year and whose colds last longer than 4-5 days probably have a weakened immune system." Therefore, holistic physicians typically emphasize addressing colds and flu by enhancing immune function through a combination of proper diet, nutritional and botanical supplements, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Prevention - Be sure to get adequate rest, including a regular good night’s sleep, which is essential for proper immune function. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of purified water, fresh vegetable juices, and herb teas. Avoid sugar, which severely depresses immune function, and eat a diet of organic foods, including plentiful servings of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, if you can, determine if you have food allergies or sensitivities. If so, avoid eating such foods. (Common foods in this category include dairy and wheat products.) In addition to a healthy diet, Dr. Murray recommends taking a daily, high potency multivitamin/mineral supplement.
Be sure that the indoor air in your home is not too dry, especially in your bedroom. The use of a humidifier to keep air moist is recommended, and you might also consider purchasing an indoor air purifier, which can help reduce the amount of dust in the environment. Those that use ozone can also kill airborne pathogens, including viruses.
Also get regular exercise, reduce stress, and frequently wash your hands to avoid infection. And regularly replace your toothbrush (every 2-3 months) and kitchen sponges, both of which can be breeding grounds for viruses and bacteria.
Diet - Avoid all junk and processed foods, sugars (including refined sweeteners, cane sugar, corn syrup, fructose, etc.), alcohol, and excessive intake of meats and animal products (including dairy). Eat lightly and emphasize green and orange vegetables, which are rich in beta-carotene. Also add garlic and/or onions to your meals, both of which boost immune function and act as natural antiviral agents. And drink plenty of purified water throughout the day (half an ounce for every pound of body weight, e.g., 75 ounces for a 150-lb man).
Nutritional Supplementation - The late Robert Atkins, M.D., founder of the Atkins Eating Plan and the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine, In New York City, recommended the following nutritional formula as a general preventive measure: Beta carotene (5,000 IU), vitamin A (3,333 IU), zinc gluconate (25 mg), vitamin C (500 mg), citrus bioflavonoids (80 mg), calcium pantothenate (80 mg), quercitin (80 mg), selenium (30 mcg), magnesium ascorbate (15 mg), folic acid (400 mcg), niacinimide (15 mg), garlic tablet (160 mg), pyridoxine HCL (4 mg), riboflavin (2 mg), dimethylglycine HCL (20 mg). For people who were especially prone to colds and flu, he recommended taking this blend of nutrients 3 times/day, while 1-2 times/day was his recommendation for healthier people. At the first sign of cold or flu symptoms, he advised taking up to 10 doses of the blend (once and hour) for the first day.
Colostrum, olive leaf extract, n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), thymus extract, and beta-1,3-glucan, and elderberry extract (Sambucol) are other supplements commonly recommended by holistic physicians for colds and flu.
Herbal Medicine - Echinacea, goldenseal, licorice root, astragalus, and lomatium are all herbs with long history of use for treating colds and flu. The Chinese herb yinqiao is another well-known cold and flu remedy, as is loquat syrup as an expectorant and for dealing with sinus congestion. Ephedra (ma-huang), just banned by the FDA, is also very useful for treating cold- and flu-related symptoms, and holistic practitioners who use it for this purpose are exempted from the ban. As they would have to be, since the FDA has approved ephedrine, a synthetic form of ephedra for use in cold and flu medications.
Homeopathy - Oscillococcinum is a very popular cold and flue remedy available in most health food stores. Take 6 tablets under the tongue every 6 hours at the onset of symptoms. Other useful remedies include Ferrum phosphate, Viscum album, Aconitum napellus, Natrum miriaticum, Allium cepa, and nux vomica.
Lifestyle - proper rest, sleep, and exercise is essential for healthy immune function. Managing stress is also very important.
Aromatherapy - the following essential oils can be used as inhalations and added to baths: camphor, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, peppermint, pine, rosemary, and tea tree oil.

News Hype by Lisa Bonnice
I spent almost six years working in a network-affiliated television news room (I'd rather not say which one, but believe me when I say it's a typical news room). While I wasn't a reporter, per se, I was required to attend the news meetings in the morning, wherein the reporters made their pitches for the stories they wanted to cover for that day. Sometimes the pitches were approved, sometimes not. However, if they had nothing, they were assigned a story by the news director. Usually those assignments came from a press release that had been faxed in, or a story the newspaper had run that morning.
Reporters spend several years in college, training and learning to be on the air and to scoop other reporters with breaking news. They graduate all bright-eyed and bushy tailed, ready to save the world and host Dateline someday. Then the reality of TV news hits them when they realize that: It's Nothing but a TV Show! Period. They are there to help fill a 30-minute slot of time and they better make it sexy, so the ratings will bring in those ad revenues.
Part of making it sexy is scaring the hell out of the viewers.
During Fire Safety week, a true snooze-fest of a story, they are sent out in droves to interview local fire fighters who had seen gnarly deaths and to talk to local burn victims or family members of those who have died in fires. During flu season, they are sent to talk to local doctors who will talk about how the local elderly will drop like flies if they don't get those shots. When something is going on in the military, they are sent out to find someone, anyone, who is connected in any way to the armed forces to interview them and localize the story. If the weatherman predicts snow, they interview local grocery store managers to make sure they have enough bread and water on the shelves for shoppers preparing to be snowed in by the upcoming blizzard.
The key phrase in that paragraph is "localize the story." How does this story affect Joe Public down the street? If they can't give local viewers a reason to watch their brand of news, then they might as well leave it up to Tom Brokaw and his national coverage of the same story.
In the aforementioned news meetings, I've witnessed news stories being manufactured. Slow news day? Let's just sift through this pile of press releases we received overnight and see what looks interesting. Hmm...a child was hit by a car in a small nearby town? How can we scare the viewers with this one? Send a reporter! Interview local doctors about how this child would have survived this high-speed crash if only he'd been wearing a suit of armor. Get a sound bite of the grieving mother bawling her eyes out and wishing she'd made Johnny wear a helmet. While you're there, ask her to not talk to the other stations so you can tell your viewers you got an exclusive interview.
And gee whiz, viewers, did you know that this can happen to your child? Your child is in danger. Your child could die! In fact, he's probably out in the road right now, dodging speeding traffic! How can you keep your child safe? How will your precious baby ever survive without this news report? Tune in tonight at 6 and 10!
When you tune in to watch, you'll see that the experts all agree that keeping your children out of the road is the safest thing to do. Thanks, guys, I never could have thought of that without your exclusive report.
Pay attention to your local news promos. You'll notice how often they use the phrase "to keep you safe," or "to keep your child safe." Once you notice it for the first time, you'll be stunned by how often your fears of injury, illness and death are exploited.
Are the reporters lying to the viewers? Of course not. Every word is true-biased and hyped, perhaps, but true. Unless, of course, it's an expressed opinion, in which case truth isn't necessary. And I honestly believe that these reporters think they are doing the right thing, because they are young and bright-eyed, and they buy into the "saving the world" nonsense. (And this early training sets a standard for their careers in TV news. They just get better and slicker at it as they rise into jobs in bigger markets.)
Reporters usually only have a couple hours to get the story together and generally have less than ninety seconds to tell that story. Sometimes that means snipping someone's sound bite to only say what the story is supposed to convey, even if that's not what the person really meant. Also, they probably have been assigned at least one, sometimes two, additional stories to cover that day. And without a crying victim they better have some incredible video footage or some startling factoid to splatter across the screen. Otherwise it's just a talking-head anchor reading a script, which makes for non-sexy news. This scenario is hardly conducive to a balanced report.
And speaking of manufactured news, have you ever watched your local news and seen a health related story featuring a reporter you've never seen before? It may very well be that it's a thinly veiled, but very well done, infomercial. For example, a dentist in La Jolla is using a new type of laser to whiten teeth. The manufacturer of that laser puts together a very slick and professional "news story" showing that process and, of course, gives a way for you to get more information on that process. Then they offer these "stories" as ready made packages for news rooms to use as their "Health Beat" report. A busy producer is always happy to snag one of these packages to fill some time in their TV show, especially if it scares the hell out of the viewers. Sometimes they even have a local reporter revoice the package so it looks like the story was done locally.
The long and the short of it is this: TV news is nothing more than a TV show that just happens to be locally produced, and filled with "true" stories, instead of wacky hijinks like sitcoms. Period, end of story. Ask the station manager or the advertising department employees. If they're honest, they'll tell you the same thing: it's just a TV show. Ratings can make or break a news show, so they will do whatever it takes to glam it up and get viewers, as long as it's within legal guidelines.
But legal doesn't always mean right. And exploiting people's fears to make a buck, to me, ain't right.

The Power of A Human Spirit - A Tribute to My Sister (Part 8)
[The first 7 parts of this article appeared in issues 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 of Volume 1 of The Health Plus Letter, which are available at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ezine.]
In the remaining months of 2001, Andrea continued her odyssey as a "real New Yorker," increasingly falling in love with the city she had wanted to live in all her life. The way she went about fulfilling her dream despite still regularly receiving chemotherapy to keep her cancer at bay inspired everyone who knew her. As New York continued its recovery from the horrors of September 11, Andrea’s passion for all that it had to offer became even stronger. Appalled by the fears that kept tourists from Broadway, she made a point of seeing even more plays than usual, and also began exploring the less well-known museums throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Nor did she cease her efforts to raise mo/ney for the relief fund set up to support NYC’s police and fire crews. By the end of the year, the jewelry she and her friend sold on the streets earned over ten thousand dollars, all of which she donated. And whenever she passed police or firemen during her travels around town, she made a point to thank them for their unselfish service.
During this time, Andrea also became a more active member of the original Gilda’s Club, found by Gene Wilder in honor of his late wi/fe, Gilda Radner, who lost her life to cancer. The Club became her home away from home as she participated in so many of the classes and lectures hosted there each week. Through the Club, she made a lot of new friends, including many who shared her journey through cancer. They came from all walks of life, age, and nationality, and all of them shared Andrea’s positive attitude, refusing to allow their illness to make them victims. Together, they became each other’s support group, picking each other up in moments of setback and despair. They were truly inspiring to be around.
It was through Gilda’s that Andrea started to be exposed to various forms of holistic healing, and she quickly gravitated to the practice of Qigong (Chi Kung), the ancient Chinese system of energy medicine, as well as the Buddhist meditative practice of mindfulness and being present to the moment. As usual, she always brought her keen intelligence to bear in such matters, and I enjoyed her tales of how she separated the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. One day she called me up, and as soon as I heard her voice, I could tell she was animated about something. It turned out that she had just returned from a lecture on mind/body medicine at Gilda’s. The speaker, a woman, claimed to be an expert in the subject, and she was greeted by a full room of attendees, nearly all of whom had cancer. After discussing the link between one’s thoughts and emotions health, she then moved into the heart of her talk. Which, in Andrea’s words, turned out to be "a guilt trip," the gist of which was that everyone in the room with cancer had it because it was "their own fault." As soon as she heard this, Andrea was incensed, and as she looked about the room and witnessed the effect of the woman’s words on the audience, she grew even more so. The woman had a persuasive manner, and Andrea could see from the audience’s body language that many in the room were accepting her claims at face value, becoming depressed and uncomfortable.
Finally, Andrea had enough. Without waiting for permission, she stood up to interrupt. "You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about?" she proclaimed. "Who do you think you are coming here and telling us our cancer is our fault? What do you know about our situation or our illness? Have you ever had cancer?" The woman, plainly in shock, admitted she had not. Andrea pressed on. "Then how dare you tell us it’s our fault that we’re sick! You don’t know the first thing about mind/body medicine and we don’t need to hear your nonsense. Get the hell out of here!" At which, the room erupted in cheers and the woman beat a hasty exit.
Much as I was angry that someone would have the gall to make such a baseless claim before a room full of cancer patients, I laughed out loud, clearly imagining Andrea’s wrath. "Good for you," I told her, letting her know that, while it is certainly true that our well-being is affected by our thoughts and emotions, no legit/imate practitioner of mind/body medicine would ever state that we are to blame for our illnesses. Especially not cancer, which is so clearly related, among other factors, to environmental toxins, the planetary burden of which continues to increase decade by decade. Finally, Andrea started laughing, too. "Larry, you should have seen her flee the room! I guarantee she won’t be back again. But with people like her spouting such nonsense, no wonder alternative medicine has a bad name!" As usual, she was absolutely right and got no argument from me.
Largely because of how well she was doing and her infectious, loving attitude, Thanksgiving and Christmas that year were joyful times for all of us in my family. Then 2002 dawned and Andrea decided to get a dog.

After ordering some of 1HealthyWorld’s eBooks, Margaret L. wrote in to express her satisfaction, adding: "The doctors (short supply here in Canada) are so tuned into the pharmaceutical industry, and those inclined to do otherwise are very careful about speaking out on complementary medicine. When I lived on Salt Spring Island, I fortunately had a medical doctor for 15 years who had changed his direction and relied on acupuncture using the original 5 element process. He teaches it in courses to doctors in the States. He and the acupuncture have been very helpful and have served me well but sometimes something more is required and I'm not so close to him today. Therefore, your writing and publications on this subject are much appreciated."
I’m glad you find what I’m doing helpful, Margaret. The doctors in Canada are no different than those in the States, for the most part, as well as those in Europe and elsewhere. Nor should they be expected to be, considering that the medical schools they attended are most likely subsidized by pharmaceutical endowments and grants, thus assuring Big Pharma of a major say in the curriculum that is taught there. Fortunately, though, these institutions are changing, adding more and more classes on alternative medicine. One of the reasons for this, at least in the U.S., is the fact that prospective medical students are increasingly including training in alternative medicine as a criteria for selecting the medical schools they attend. And so the tide continues to turn ...
D.H. commenting on the recent flu vaccine articles By Dr. Sherri Tenpenny that have appeared in previous issues of The Health Plus Letter, sent me the following email: "I have mixed emotions about the flu news. Clearly someone is trying (and succeeding) to induce fear in the general public. Many stories advise people to be altruistic and get FluMist if they qualify for it, and leave the allegedly limited supply of flu shots for the vulnerable people who don't qualify. What a great marketing strategy for the FluMist product, which costs many times as much as the traditional shot.
"I firmly believe that by leading a healthy lifestyle and taking various nutrients, I can radically reduce my risk of getting a flu. On the other hand, I think of my father. He got the Spanish flu when he was just a toddler. It triggered rheumatic heart disease, which caused him a life/time of ill health, and cut his lifespan in half. I was just a toddler when he died."
There is no question that the flu can be an extremely serious condition for people who are immune-compromised. (An estimated 36,000 thousand people die of the flu each and every year.) Neither Dr. Tenpenny nor I dispute that. The point of her articles is that flu vaccines can pose serious health risks, too. Given the loss of D.H’s father to the Spanish flu, his concerns are all the more valid. Yet his own approach to avoiding the flu goes to the heart of the recommendations made by holistic physicians - namely boosting immunity. For more on that, see the self-care tips above.
Ann G, also of Canada, writes: "Thank you for your wonderful gift of knowledge and health ... It is amazing people like you that change everything."
While I’m flattered by Ann’s kind words, let me hasten to add that I am no more amazing than the next person and it is all of us together who create change in the world.

Books:
The Healing of Cancer by Barry Lynes. This damning indictment of the medical establishment clearly documents the collusion of special interests over the past 100 years to suppress viable alternative cancer treatments. As Lynes writes, finding a cure for cancer is not the problem. What is most needed in "the establishment of legal and political conditions which will enable physicians to use the cancer cures which have already proved successful." Essential reading for anyone with an interest in this area.
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber. A tale of a prostitute’s sojourn through the social strata of Victorian England told with an engrossing blend of wit, compassion, and historical insights. I really enjoyed reading it.
See you next week..
