What's New
Hello. This week, because of the length of Dr. Ivker’s concluding section on how to holistically treat candidiasis, I am opting to omit the Health News and Commentary section. It will return next week, along with some other announcements I think you’ll be interested in. In the meantime, thanks once more to all of you who took the time to email me last week. I really appreciate your kind words and suggestions, so please keep them coming. You can reach me at larry@1healthyworld.com). And, as always, if you like The Health Plus Letter, please forward this eZine to your friends.
Quote of the Day
“Most over-the-counter and almost all prescribed drug treatments merely mask symptoms or control health problems, or in some way alter the way organs or [body] systems work. Drugs almost never deal with the reasons why these problems exist, while they frequently create new health problems as side effects of their activities.” - John R. Lee, M.D.
Fast Facts
An estimated 80 percent of all incidences of cancer are directly due to diet and exposure to environmental carcinogens.
Despite this fact, the National Cancer Institute, with an annual budget of approximately $2 billion, expends only 5% of its funds each year on cancer prevention.

Holistic Treatment of Candidiasis (Part Four) By Robert Ivker, D.O.
[Rob Ivker is a good friend of mine, who exemplifies what it means to practice holistic medicine. What follows is part two of an article illustrating his successful approach for reversing candidias (systemic yeast infection). This week, Rob discusses how to properly treat this prevalent condition.

Treating Candidiasis
The successful treatment of candidiasis incorporates several of the basic principles of Holistic Medicine, which emphasizes self-care, proper diet, and the wise use of both conventional and complementary therapies. As we have seen, usually a variety of factors are responsible for candidiasis, each of which need to be addressed directly. Because candidiasis results from these conditions occurring over a prolonged period of time, patients must realize that there is no quick-fix cure. In order to be effective, both time and personal commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes are required. Treatment also depends on the degree of yeast overgrowth and how badly it has compromised immune function. When yeast overgrowth is confined only to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract or vagina, the treatment tends to be shorter and less involved. In systemic cases, however, where yeast toxins have spread throughout the body, treatment protocols can last as long as six months to a year. And in severe cases of leaky gut syndrome, successful treatment (requiring the healing of the bowel lining) takes at least a year or more.
In my practice, I prescribe a four-stage approach in treating systemiccandidiasis and find that best results are obtained when my patients begin withparts I and II before progressing to III and IV. The four stages consist of I) killing the yeast overgrowth, II) eliminating the fuel for the growth of candida through a yeast-free diet, III) restoring normal friendly bacteria in the bowel, and IV) strengthening the immune system.
Stage I: In my experience, the most effective way of killing candida is through the judicious use of prescription antifungal drugs, such as Nizoral, Diflucan, and Sporonox. All of these drugs are expensive (ranging in price from $3 to $13 a tablet), and can also cause side effects (Nizoral in particular can cause liver toxicity), but I've found nothing that works as well in eliminating yeast overgrowth. Typically, I prescribe 200 mg per day for at least one month, and often suggest Nizoral every other day for a second month. (To safeguard against liver toxicity, I recommend a blood test for liver enzymes prior to taking Nizoral, along with the herb silymarin (milk-thistle extract) for its liver-protecting properties.) Nystatin is another popular prescription drug used in the treatment of candidiasis. It's very effective in killing candida in the bowel, but seems to be ineffective when candida is systemic.
During the first two to three weeks of treatment, a common side effect to watch for is the "Herxheimer reaction," which occurs due to the rapid yeast die-off caused by these drugs. As they die, they release additional toxins into the bloodstream that can trigger headaches, fatigue, nausea, loose stools, flulike aches and pains, and other symptoms. To minimize these effects, I recommend drinking distilled water (it can also be used as an enema to help cleanse the lower bowel of waste), vitamin C, and ibuprofen. Sometimes these symptoms can be so severe that you might feel worse than you did before starting this program, but if you stick with it, eventually you will begin to feel much better.
For patients who are unable to obtain these drugs or who cannot take them due to their potential side effects, a number of other options are available, although none of them work as quickly or effectively, in my experience. Among these are the homeopathic remedies Aqua Flora, Candida-Away (available in health food stores) and Myocan Combo (available only through health care practitioners). All of these remedies can also be used with Nystatin with good results. Other products are also available at most health food stores to combat candida, including Yeast Fighters, Candida Cleanse, Cand-Ex, Caprystatin Yeast Defense, and Cantrol. Caprylic acid, garlic, pau d'arco, and other herbs that either act directly on candida or indirectly by strengthening the immune system can be helpful, as well. There are a number of new herbal/supplement combinations available in most health food stores. Flora Balance, a unique strain of bacteria called Bacillus laterosporus B.O.D., can also be used (take two capsules twenty minutes before breakfast for two months, then reduce to one capsule for one to two more months), as can the botanical formula Intestinalis, which both treats candida and eliminates certain types of parasites.
Bowel cleansing during this stage of your program is also important. If you suffer from candidiasis, chances are you also have mucus and impacted food residue built up as a thick coat along the walls of your large intestine. This encrusted matter diminishes colon function, contributes to disease by preventing the absorption of vital nutrients, and creates an ideal enviroment for yeast to thrive. One rapid method of cleansing the bowel and removing excess candida is colonic therapy. These treatments are best done on a weekly basis during stage I, and need to be administered by trained practitioners. (To find one, you might inquire at the office of a holistic physician, chiropractor, or naturopath.) Enemas, although not as effective, can be performed, as well. It is also possible to clean the colon by following a yeast-free diet, drinking plenty of water, getting regular exercise, taking caprylic acid, and drinking 8 to 10 ounces of water or diluted juice mixed with one heaping teaspoon of psyllium and two tablespoons of liquid bentonite twice a day. Both psyllium and bentonite eliminate colon toxicity. You may experience some bloating if you try this combination. If so, reduce the above dosages in half but still take it twice a day.
Stage II: In addition to killing off candida, eliminating their fuel through diet and strengthening immune function is also essential. Dietary considerations comprise the second part of candidiasis treatment and should be adopted at the same time that you begin stage I. Although there is no single anticandida diet that perfectly meets everyone's unique biochemical needs, the following principles can be of help to most people: Eat primarily protein and fresh vegetables, with a limited amount of complex carbohydrates and foods rich in healthy fats, along with small amount of fresh fruit. Avoid sugar and all concentrated sweets. For best results, rotate all acceptable foods, eating particular foods no more than once every three to four days. Usually three to six months is the minimum time frame required for maintaining the diet, although it can become less restrictive the longer you follow it. The more involved you become in shopping, planning your meals, and cooking, the easier and more rewarding you will find the diet to be. Acceptable foods include raw or lightly steamed, fresh, organic vegetables, especially those high in water content and low in starch. These include all green and leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage, kale, sprouts, greens, and parsley; and low-starch vegetables such as celery, zucchini, squash, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, asparagus, tomato, onion, cucumber, garlic, radish, and Brussels sprouts. Carrot, beet, turnip, eggplant, artichoke, avocado, and peas can also be eaten, although they contain moderately higher levels of starch. Proteins can be eaten freely. I recommend free-range, organic meats, and deep-water ocean fish. (Beef and pork should be avoided, however.) Organic seeds and nuts are also permissible. Complex carbohydrates can also be used, but try to limit yourself to no more than one serving a day. These include potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, legumes, and whole grains, either sprouted or cooked. For best results, wait until you are in the third week of your program before introducing legumes and also be sure to rule out any food allergies you might have. Flaxseed oil (1 to 2 tablespoons daily) used on grains or vegetables, or as a salad dressing, should also be consumed (do not heat or cook with it). Other acceptable oils are cold pressed olive, linseed, walnut, safflower, sunflower, and soy. Certain fruits are also permitted, although you should limit yourself to one serving per day until you are sure they are not aggravating your symptoms. For the first 21 days, start with melons and berries. Then add grapefruit, apple, pear, peach, orange, nectarine, apricot, cherry, and pineapple. Fruits juices in general are best avoided unless they are freshly squeezed.
Foods to avoid include all foods containing sugar (cakes, cookies, donuts, ice cream, soft drinks, etc.); sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, glucose, dextrose, corn sweetener, corn syrup, sorbitol, and manitol; honey; molasses; maple syrup; date sugar; barley malt; rice syrup; NutraSweet; and saccharine. Also avoid table salt, which contains 50 percent sugar. (Use sea salt instead.) Milk and dairy products (including cheese) should also be avoided, although butter is acceptable in limited amounts. (Unsweetened almond or soy milk can be used in place of milk.) Also eliminate all bread and yeast-raised baked products, such as whole grain cereals, pastas, tortillas, muffins, and crackers. Other foods to avoid include mushrooms, rye and wheat, alcoholic beverages, caffeine, white or refined flour products, packaged and processed foods, olives, pickles, sauerkraut, vinegar, mustard, ketchup, margarine, and refined and hydrogenated oils.
Improvement should begin to occur within one month of following the above dietary guidelines and the steps outlined in stage I. If little or no improvement is noticed, I recommend that you be tested for food allergy and/or the presence of parasites. People with leaky gut syndrome also have very slow progress.
Stage III: After you have followed stages I and II for about six weeks, you will be ready to begin stage III, which involves restoring normal friendly bacteria in the bowel through the use of lactobacillus acidophilius and bifidus supplements commonly available at most health food stores. Good bacteria cannot fully grow back until yeast overgrowth in the bowel has been greatly diminished. Although there are many brands of these products to choose from, the majority of them are of little worth, as they contain only a small amount of these living organisms. Even most freeze-dried types are deficient in adequate amounts. To ensure potency buy refrigerated brands with an expiration date between one and ten months from the date of your purchase. Also buy only liquid cultures or powdered forms containing whey (dairy) or nondairy varieties, as only these forms provide an ample food supply to sustain the fragile lactobacilli. Take two servings per day, morning and evening.
Stage IV: The final stage in treating candidiasis involves strengthening the immune system. One of the easiest ways to do this, along with proper diet, is through the use of nutritional supplements. I recommend the following nutrients and dosage ranges.
Vitamins: vitamin C (1,000-2,000 mg 3X/d), beta carotene (25,000 IU 1-2x/d), vitamin E (400 IU 1-2x/d), selenium (200 mcg/d), zinc picolinate (20-40 mg/d), magnesium citrate or aspartate (500 mg/d), calcium (1,000 mg/d), chromium picolinate (200 mcg/d), vitamin B complex (1-3x/d), and biotin (300-1,000 mcg 3x/d).
Herbs: Garlic (1,200-2,000 mg 3x/d), echinacea (200 mg 3x/d), and grapeseed extract (100 mg 3x/d).
Other supplements include flaxseed oil or other essential fatty acids (Omega 3, evening primrose, or black currant oils), amino acid supplements, adrenal-enhancers (I use Adrenal Complex, available only through practitioners.), and hydrochloric acid (HCl) (1 capsule with pepsin with every meal) to restore digestive function. In addition to the above, be sure to drink adequate amounts of water throughout the day, exercise regularly, and get eight hours of sleep per night. Also take care to reduce or eliminate sources of emotional stress.
If, after following this program for six weeks or more, you still are experiencing little or no improvement, most likely there are other contributing factors to your problem which still need to be addressed. These can include food allergy and leaky gut syndrome (both already mentioned), intestinal parasites (especially giardia), hypochlorhydria, pancreatic enzyme deficiency, hypothyroidism, adrenal exhaustion, chronic viral infection, chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical hypersensitivity, and heavy metal poisoning, among other possible causes. Candidiasis can also be sexually transmitted from your spouse or partner. In all cases of prolonged candidiasis, professional care is required to address all of the causes, and to implement an appropriate treatment strategy.
Summary
Candidiasis remains one of the most elusive conditions to detect, primarily because it manifests so many disparate symptoms, and because it's still a challenging diagnosis to make. The information in this article should help you determine if you might be suffering from candidiasis. Once a diagnosis of candidiasis is made, making a commitment to the program outlined above can offer significant relief. You will know when you have fully recovered because you will start to feel better than you have in years. Don't allow your victory to be short-lived, however. Try to maintain a healthy diet that avoids excess sugar, alcohol, preservatives, and fried, fatty foods. Also continue to nurture yourself in body, mind, and spirit, to ensure that your immune function remains optimal.

The Human Energy Field – An Interview With Valerie Hunt, Ph.D.
[Dr. Valerie Hunt is one of the most brilliant healers and researchers I have ever met. What follows is part four of an interview I conducted with Valerie that is featured in my next book, Health on the Edge: Visionary Views of Healing in the New Millennium, which will be published by Tarcher/Putnam later this year. Q: What other areas of research are you involved in?
A: New frontiers of research concerning participation. What I mean by participation is that I'm not wanting to do things for people, I'm wanting people to do things to and for themselves. It's fine to have a healer, but unless you can take the energy in the field and heal yourself, you've got to go see the healer. It's an on and off deal. I want it to be an "on deal," so that's why I want the individual's participation.
I have created what I call "Mind Mastery Meditations," which are self-help healing procedures. These teach people how to move energy into their own field, and can be applied to broad categories of illness, and help them in their personal evolution.
I will also be developing subliminal energy tapes with focused instruction. I've already developed a series of music and sound tapes, which are the world's first authentic auric field sounds harmonically correlated with music. What I've done is taken the various electromagnetic frequencies of the field and combined these with the music that matches each frequency. The red, orange, amber frequency spectrum, for example, goes with contemporary African music with a strong beat, and can be used to revitalize the physical body and activate spontaneous emotions. The yellow, green, and gold frequency is a waltz wave. When you listen to it, it fine tunes sensation and perception, improves the efficiency of the nervous system, and creatively activates the mind. Then you have the blue, violet, and mauve spectrum, which correlates to the great classical music repertory, and encourages a contemplative state of peace, tranquility, and higher consciousness. Then we come into the white and gold spectrum, which correlates to spiritual a cappella choral singing, and elevates thoughts and emotions to a broader worldview of richer beauty and deeper wisdom. Or you can listen to the Rainbow tape, which progresses through all the frequencies to stabilize the field and encourage expanded awareness. The tapes work directly on the amplitude of the human body.
Now the subliminal tapes I'll be doing will not only focus on a specific problem, but also the frequency necessary to heal it. Diabetes, for example, is a problem related to not enough of the red frequency in the field. I've cured diabetes by changing the person's field, bringing in the red, and guiding them back to where they dispense with their anger and hostility. These tapes will include the sounds of the necessary frequencies with instructions we will record and make subliminal, and they will directly interact with the electromagnetic field of the human aura.
Another area of my research has to do with bioscalar waves.
Q: Which are?
The human auric field is composed of electromagnetic frequencies which pass through the body as waves of energy. But there is also a type of electromagnetism that is organized differently. It is not a wave, but is changed to a standing energy. In physics, this is known as a scalar wave, and when it exists in the body, I call it a bioscalar wave. If energy is introduced on a straight line from two energy sources of the same frequency at the same time, coming toward each other to meet in the middle of a mobius coil, the frequencies get cancelled out and it becomes standing energy. This energy doesn't flow like a wave, but it does occupy space and can increase in spatial mass. When the space it occupies is sufficient, the energy expands outward in circles of energy, directly influencing the blood and the body's lymphatic system. As you know, red and white blood cells tend to clump together when there is illness or injury. According to research conducted at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, scalar energy reverses this -- it "unsticks" the cells and circulation and lymphatic flow improves, hastening healing.
I believe the creation of the bioscalar wave is the essential electromagnetic phenomenon of all healing procedures, and I've discovered that each of us can be the generator for that. We can create a standing energy. We can imagine bringing in a particular frequency or a particular color of energy through a straight line through our body from our hands reaching out to the sides. We can bring that energy in to the middle of our body, and that's the mobius coil from which the energy spirals upward. You can do amazing things with this process. We have found that all medical conditions are improved or eliminated by bioscalar activation, although in some situations the results can take weeks or months to occur. But the direction is always positive as the body establishes new energy field patterns that are self-healing.
Q: What do you foresee occurring in the health field as your work begins to reach a broader audience?
A: A new model. As I said, the model I am after is a new model of the human being based on health, consciousness, and evolution.
Currently, there are three models that define our belief systems. The first is the physiological model, which has to do with how we treat disease. We treat disease symptoms because we do not know what health is; we accept as fact that health is the absence of disease. Second is the biochemical model, which says that life started from a chemical soup and then progressed to protozoa and so forth. This isn't so. You can have all the chemistry in the world, but if there is no electricity, no power, and no charge, there is no life. In the medicine of the future, the emphasis on biochemistry will be phased out.
Then there is the behavioral model, which has to do with perception, experience, ego, personality, emotion, and brain hemispheres, and only addresses a very small part of human behavior, and only the memories and experiences of this current lifehood.
These models are not incorrect, but they are incomplete and cannot explain all of our choices, actions, and perceptions. We need a new model rather than trying to fit ourselves into models that do not encompass all we are. This is the model of the human energy field or the mind of man, a field of energy that incorporates all behaviors, even to the highest level -- the level of the soul. The soul is the apex of the field; it holds the memory of everything that has ever occurred to it, including other lifehoods, and is also the source of intuition, insight, and creativity, and the source of mystical experiences. I talked about energy field levels of consciousness. All of us are electromagnetically wired for divine experiences. It's not a case of these being something foreign to us; when we reach a certain frequency level, we will have a spiritual experience, and spiritual enlightenment is our evolutionary goal. Acknowledging our field and learning how to activate it is a way of achieving that, creating health and healing disease in the process.

Reader Feedback
I received many emails this past week congratulating me for the successful launch of The Health Plus Letter and commending me for its content. I’m very gratified to know that what I write each week is so well-received. But I’m even happier when I receive emails like the one that follows, from Marilyn M, who wrote:
“I am enjoying your newsletter. My husband and I have been taking vitamins for more than twenty years and even see a holistic doctor in Brooklyn who administers chelation therapy. I believe this has helped my husband recover from cancer.”
Marilyn and her husband are perfect examples of proactive people who have taken responsibility for their health and are not afraid of exploring nontraditional health care options. Helping people become aware of what those options are is the primary purpose for both The Health Plus Letter and 1HealthyWorld.com, and I won’t be satisfied until the positive results that Marilyn and her husband have achieved using holistic medicine become the norm in this country, not the exception.
Please keep your emails coming. I enjoy hearing from you and read everything I receive.
