Holistic Treatment of Sinusitis by Robert Ivker, D.O.

Since 1981, sinusitis has been the most common chronic disease in America,according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Today, nearly 40 millionAmericans, or one out of seven people, suffer from this debilitating ailment. Acute sinusitis is an infection of one or more of the sinus cavities. Symptoms include a stuffy head, headache, facial pain, green/yellow mucus, postnasal drainage, and fatigue. When the infection persists or recurs three or more times within six months, the condition is called chronic sinusitis and can turn the lives of those afflicted by it into a perpetual state of misery. I know. I suffered from chronic sinusitis for years.

Like the vast majority of sinusitis sufferers, originally I was told that I would have to learn to live with it. The only treatment options offered me were continued antibiotics or even surgery, but neither one offered a guaranteed cure. Fortunately, I refused to accept that prognosis and after committing myself to a comprehensive holistic approach to my overall well-being, I was able to cure myself. As a result, I've also been able to help thousands of my patients and readers of my book, Sinus Survival, do the same.

What follows are the most effective components of my Sinus Survival program, a holistic self-care approach for preventing and curing sinusitis. These measures can also dramatically improve allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and even colds. However, if your symptoms are unchanged after two weeks of applying the following measures, seek out the guidance of a holistic physician.

Know Thy Enemy

The first step in treating sinusitis is determining whether or not you are afflicted by it. This seems obvious, but all too often sinusitis is mistaken for a prolonged cold or even perennial allergies. The majority of the public and the medical community remain unaware of how widespread sinusitis has become, further contributing to a misdiagnosis of cold. A 1993 research study performed at the University of Virginia attests to this. In the study, students who believed they were suffering from a cold were evaluated with CT scans. The scans revealed that 87 percent of the students actually had sinus infections.

Typically, a cold lasts for a week or less and is usually preceded by a sore throat. Symptoms include a runny nose, nasal congestion, and thin, clear or white mucus. Sinusitis, by contrast, is longer lasting (often three or more weeks) and hallmarked by the symptoms cited above. Being aware of these differences will help you make a more accurate diagnosis.

Environmental Recommendations

There is no denying that environmental factors play a major role in sinusitis nor is it surprising that the regions of the country with the highest incidence of sinusitis also have the highest levels of air pollution. Sixty percent of the population today lives in areas in which the air they breath is hazardous to their health. Unfortunately, moving to a healthier community isn't always an option. Still, while we cannot easily change our outdoor environment, it is possible for us to create an optimal indoor environment. Your goal should be to create an indoor environment in both your home and workplace that provides you with air that is clean, moist, warm, and rich in oxygen and negative ions.

Negative-ion Generators. Negative air ions are particularly important for optimum indoor air quality. Healthy levels range from 3,000 to 6,000 ions per cubic centimeter. (The average indoor environment in the U.S. contains only 200 ions/cu cm, according to the EPA.) To boost negative ion levels consider the purchase of a negative-ion generator. These units are efficient air cleaners that attract dust, pollen, mold, animal dander, and even viruses and bacteria. Some evidence indicates that they may also help restore damaged mucous membranes by stimulating the cilia (microscopic hairs) that line its surface. Look for a unit that is self-regulating and doesn't put out too many or too few ions. (Those that produce an excess of ions will blacken the walls.)

Humidifiers. Humidifiers are also essential, even in humid climates, and particularly in the winter, when heat and closed windows make for air that is extremely dry. Warm-mist units are best, although central humidifiers are also helpful. Use a flow-through unit, not one that requires a tray of standing water.

In addition to the above, ensure that your indoor environments are well ventilated and purchase good filters for your furnace and air conditioners. Pleated filters in the $15 to $25 range are best. Use the air conditioner only when you must, as it depletes negative ions. Also consider adding plants to your environment, which will add both moisture and oxygen to the air. Spider plants, philodendron, and chrysanthemums are all effective air filters. Finally, prohibit cigarette smoking in your home and office, and if you smoke yourself, get help in stopping.

Diet and Nutrition

As with all other chronic conditions, proper diet is important. I recommend a diet that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables (7 to 11 servings per day), whole grains (including breads, cereal, and pasta), and fish or poultry. Avoid all milk and dairy products (they produce more mucus), as well as caffeine, sugar, and alcohol. Also be sure that your symptoms are not aggravated by food allergies, which are often overlooked or misdiagnosed. The most common food allergies in relation to sinusitis and other respiratory conditions are milk and wheat. Typically the very foods people crave are also the ones they are allergic too. Consult with a holistic physician or clinical nutritionist if you suspect food allergies are part of your condition.

Be sure to drink adequate amounts of good quality (bottled or filtered) water throughout the day, as this will help your mucous membranes stay hydrated and make it easier for them to flow and drain. A good rule of thumb is to drink one-half to two- thirds ounce of water per pound of body weight during the course of the day. For a 160 pound male, this equates to 80 to 100 ounces of water. Drink most of this water during the day and between meals, since too much water with meals can impair digestion.

Proper supplementation with nutrients can also be helpful in preventing and minimizing the effects of sinusitis. Particularly effective are antioxidant vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C (2,000 to 5,000 mg 3x/d) and vitamin E (400 IU 1-2x/d), beta carotene (25,000 - 50,000 IU 1-2x/d), grapeseed extract (100 mg 1-3x/d), zinc (20-60 mg/d), and selenium (100- 200 mcg/d). NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is an amino acid with proven effectiveness for dealing with respiratory conditions. NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that provides benefit for every cell, organ and tissue in the body. The recommended dosage is 500 mg 3x/day. Magnesium citrate or aspartate (500 mg/d), calcium (1,000 mg/d), and chromium picolinate (200mcg/d), along with a good multivitamin formula(1-3x/d), are also recommended, as is 2 tbsp per day of flaxseed oil, a rich source of fatty acids. To ensure proper healthy intestinal flora balance, also consider taking acidophilus (2 caps 2-3x/d).

Herbal Remedies

Since acute sinusitis most often begins as a cold, preventing or minimizing the effects of a cold can often also prevent a sinus infection. To that end, I usually recommend the following herbs for treating acute respiratory conditions or for patients who feel on the verge of getting sick. They are best taken at the onset of symptoms until your condition improves.

Yin chiao: Use only for colds. This Chinese herb is exceptional for knocking out a cold before it ever truly takes hold. Take 5 tablets 4-5x/day for 2-3 days.

Echinacea: Acting as a natural antibiotic, antibacterial, and antiviral, echinacea also has anti-inflammatory properties, and should be taken regularly throughout the course of your condition. I prefer the liquid type to capsules, though both forms can be used. Take 1 dropperful or 200 mg 3x/day.

Goldenseal: This is another useful herb that works synergistically with echinacea. It enhances mucous membrane function. The dosage is the same as for echinacea, and again the liquid type is preferred. Note: Pregnant woman and those who suffer from ragweed allergies should avoid the use of goldenseal.

Garlic: Garlic is a well-known herbal remedy. Nonodorous liquid and capsule forms make it easy to use. Take 1,200-2,000 mg 3x/day.

Bee propolis: Bee propolis is not an herb per se, but I include it he/re because of its ability to strengthen immune function. A useful daily dose is 500 3x/day.

Hydrotherapy

Keeping your nasal passages hydrated and free from congestion is important as both a preventive and therapeutic measure for dealing with respiratory conditions. Besides ensuring that you are drinking adequate amounts of good quality drinking water each day, you can bathe your mucous membranes as well. The most common method for doing so is to breathe steam, which is one of the best ways I know of to nurture your entire respiratory tract. Many people achieve this by boiling a pot of water and then inhaling the steam that is given off, often covering their head with a towel. A more effective option is to use a device called a Steam Inhaler® . It's not as hot and is more direct than using a pot of boiling water. For either method of steam inhalation, you can attain even better results by adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the hot water.

Nasal Irrigation. This is another extremely effective method for flushing infected sinuses and cleansing the membranes. For chronic sinusitis sufferers, I recommend this procedure at least once a day, preferably in the evening. For best results, spend 10 to 15 minutes inhaling steam before you begin.

Mix a third of a teaspoon of noniodized salt into an 8 ounce glass of nonchlorinated water and add a pinch of baking soda.. Using a Neti pot, rubber ear syringe, or a Grossan nasal attachment to a Water Pik, introduce the salt water solution into one nostril at a time. The first few times you try this, you may experience coughing but with practice you'll be able to perform this routine quite easily. As mucus becomes dislodged, gently blow your nose. Alternate nostrils, irrigating each at least 3 times. This method is also a very good way to prevent colds.

Saline Nasal Spray. Using a nasal spray throughout the day, especially when you are forced to breathe air that is dirty or dry, is another useful way to keep your sinuses healthy. This additional type of irrigation helps to wash out tiny particles of pollution and acts as a humidifier by keeping the membranes moist. Make sure the spray comes out of the bottle as a mist, not as a stream.

Exercise

For people suffering from respiratory conditions, exercise presents a unique challenge. On the one hand, their mucous membranes are impaired and they may also have diminished lung capacity, meaning that exercise can be potentially harmful and even precipitate a sinus infection. However, when proper precautions are followed, I find that light aerobic exercise can pay big dividends in the lives of my patients with sinusitis. I especially recommend a program of brisk walking. If you are used to a more strenuous program, try walking instead in order to allow your mucous membranes to heal as you strengthen your immune system. You can vary your routine with hiking, jogging, swimming (use nose clips to avoid chlorine exposure), or cycling. Ideally, an outdoor program is best, but take care not to expose yourself to heavy air pollution. Schedule your exercise times around the rise and fall of pollution levels and try to avoid main roads. I've found it useful to exercise outdoors during the evening in the winter months, and in the mornings during summer.

When you finish your exercise routine, end with this simple exercise: Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. Do this for as long as you can. This will further open up your sinuses. For full benefit, do this while exposed to wet steam.

Mental and Emotional Recommendations

Being saddled with a chronic health condition can often lead to feelings of anger, sadness, fear, and despair. To create a more positive outlook, I've it beneficial to incorporate affirmations as part of an overall healing program. Spend time each day writing your affirmations down or else saying them aloud. Suggested affirmations that you can use include, I am breathing freely and easily. The air I breathe strengthens and nurtures me. My sinuses are getting better every day. Remember to be as specific as possible with your affirmations and always keep them focused on the present and the positive outcome you desire. (Repeating I am not sick, for instance, actually places your attention on your illness, not on being well.) At first, you might feel that affirmations are ineffective, even silly. But if you stay with them, after a few weeks you will begin to notice some positive changes occurring, especially if you are also practicing the physical and environmental measures that I've recommended.

The most common emotion that triggers sinusitis is repressed anger. Safely releasing anger on a regular basis has done more for my sinus patients than years of antibiotics or multiple sinus surgeries. Giving yourself permission to express your anger not only results in improved emotional well-being, it also helps your sinuses to drain better. If you need help learning how to freely express painful emotions, I suggest you seek the aid of a pychotherapist or holistic physician.

Candida

Also known as candidiasis or yeast overgrowth, candida is an often overlooked co- factor, and even primary cause, of chronic sinusitis. This is particularly true of patients who have endured long-term antibiotic treatment, as antibiotics tend to destroy friendly bacteria in the digestive tract, allowing for the overgrowth of candida to occur. Almost all of my sickest sinusitis patients sinusitis also suffer from candida. I point this out to alert readers whose sinusitis isn't responding to treatment to consider this possibility. Summary

It's important to realize that chronic sinusitis, like all chronic conditions, cannot be cured overnight. True healing is an ongoing process that can only occur when we take responsibility for our lives and address every aspect of our health - physical, environmental, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social. The suggestions above have significantly helped nearly all of my patients and have the potential to do the same for you. The Power of A Human Spirit - A Tribute to My Sister (Part 6)

After fulfilling her dreams of moving to Manhattan and seeing the Grand Canyon in the summer of 2001, Andrea resumed her routine of conventional cancer care, once more opting to undergo chemotherapy treatments. Largely because of her will to live, her cancer markers were once again moving towards normal levels, and Dr. Chung, her new oncologist, was very optimistic about Andrea’s long-term prognosis, especially in light of Andrea’s positive attitude.

I spoke with Andrea regularly during this time, and she was always in high spirits. She truly loved New York City and was thrilled to be living in the heart of Manhattan, availing herself of all the culture it has to offer. We hardly ever discussed her illness, because Andrea had made up her mind that her focus was on living and enjoying the moment, not worrying about her future. This she succeeded in doing in a manner that inspired everyone who knew her. I loved hearing her telling me about the latest play, film, concert, or art show she had seen, and looked forward to visiting her in the fall.

During this time, Andrea also began her involvement with Gilda’s Club, the support center for cancer patients and their families named after Gilda Radner and started by her husband, Gene Wilder. There she extended her circle of friends and offered her support to others who shared her disease. She also found a doll studio in lower Manhattan and looked forward to once again creating the porcelain dolls for which she was so well-known, because of the exquisite artistry she brought to her creations, including designing and sewing their clothing. All in all, she was having the time of her life and enjoying every minute of it.

Then, on the morning of September 11, the world as we knew it was irrevocably changed. Like most everyone else, I watched television that morning, riveted with horror and sorrow as the World Trade Center buildings burned and then collapsed in the city Andrea and I both loved. Then, along with the rest of my family, I frantically tried to reach Andrea to see if she was all right, but for hours the phone lines were impossible. I have many other good friends in Manhattan, but Andrea was closest in proximity to the destruction. Finally, I got through, but only to reach her answering machine. I left a long, emotional message, telling her how much I loved her, and pleading with her to consider moving back home. Late that afternoon, she returned my call, obviously shaken. She had witnessed everything firsthand and been out on streets with her friends, offering help to those fleeing north, covered from head to toe with ash, soot, and God only knows what else. By even then, Andrea’s heroic spirit didn’t desert her.

"Larry, listen to me," she said, once more taking the role of consoler. "I’m fine, but the phones are all screwed up, so I want you to call everyone and tell them I’m all right. And don’t worry about me. What happened today is horrible, but New York is going to triumph over it. Whoever did this will fail, they can’t defeat us. And no, I’m not moving back to Utica. New York is my home now and no terrorist is going to make me abandon it!"

I wept as she spoke to me (just as I weep now recalling that moment), marveling at her strength and wondering where she got it from. ("From Mom," Andrea would later tell me, and of course she was right.) Then we said goodbye, and I made the calls to the rest of our family, letting them know that Andrea was unharmed.

Two days later, Andrea was able to send everyone an email. The subject line read: It’s Andrea, I am OK, and her message is one more example of how wise and spiritual my sister is (I write in the present tense, because her Spirit lives on) This is what she wrote:

"I am finally able to get online. First of all, physically, I am OK.

I felt the blast of both planes from my building, as I live a mile away from the buildings. I went out onto the plaza and actually watched in horror the explosions and collapse of both buildings. The most horrific vision was the sight of people actually jumping from the second building moments before the building simply crumbled. Within hours the people from that area made their way up here to the village [Greenwhich Village - Andrea lived in a high rise near West Houston and La Guardia.] The mood was one of absolute quiet. Mary and I met two middle-aged women covered with soot, one without a shoe, who were simply walking away from the scene with their young little yuppie boss. The three of them, despite their different races and positions with their firm, were united as one unit. The women were obviously in shock. We offered them help, but they continued walking forth in a daze. This hell continued on in silence all afternoon. The sirens continued and have still at this point failed to stop. The mood out in my neighborhood is that we are all Americans. We all want to live in this wonderful city. No one wants this war to continue here or overseas. Bombing and killing yet more innocent people like those here in this great city will never bring the thousands backs.

My main problems this morning: I still cannot get up to chemo, the air quality is horrible, and now all subways, buses, and cabs cannot come down here. Although my spirit is broken, I know, like myself, the rest of the New Yorkers will survive this and continue to become better people because of this tragedy. Many of you may be asking where God is this year in light of my illness, Ken’s death [Ken was the fiancé of my sister Cindy; earlier that year he dropped dead of a heart attack without any warning.], and now this. I will tell you that He is here with all of you right now. He is with the rescue workers that I see out my window, both heading in and out of the devastation. And He is with me today. My children and my family up in Utica were spared. We do know that one of the planes traveled close to Utica, but God kept you safe. Now simply be happy for your life and your health. Do not hate those from other countries. America is a land of freedom. We would not be who we are today if we didn’t open our country to the world. And lastly, do not be afraid to come to New York. This city represents the very best and, yes, the very worst of everything. But in the last few days I can tell you, while witnessing the acts of the devil, I have also witnessed many angels. My heart goes out to the three Mexican men who took the 6 train back down here with me yesterday, making sure I would not faint. I was totally distraught after making my way uptown and being refused chemo. Those three men just rode the train down to Bleeker Street, never saying a word as I sat on the train crying, but I knew they were watching me to make sure I did not faint. At that moment, Mexico, Utica, cancer, whatever, didn’t mean anything. We were simply four New Yorkers trying to get to where we were going on that somber day ... They were the quiet angels that this city has plenty of.

Recipe of the Week:

Quinoa-Black Bean Festival Salad With Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette

Ingredients:

3 cups cooked quinoa (a nutrient-rich grain available in most health food stores)
1-1/2 cups cooked black beans
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1 cup yellow squash, chopped medium size
1 cup zucchini, chopped medium size
1 bunch scallion, chopped
1/4 cup finely chopped parsley

Add all the above ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix well.

Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette

Juice of 2 large limes
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup Bragg’s Liquid Aminos
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp honey
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste

In a blender, add all the vinaigrette ingredients and blend for three minutes until homogenous. Drizzle over quinoa-black bean mixture, stir well and chill before serving.

Julie K wrote in to ask if holistic physicians accept health insu/rance. The answer depends on both the individual physician and on the patient’s health insurance coverage. Many of the therapies within the field of holistic medicine are not yet covered by insurance. Others, such as chiropractic and acupuncture, are, to an increasing degree. MDs and osteopathic physicians who practice holistically often are able to accept patients’ insurance plans, but some do not.

It’s my hope that in the near future at least all of the major therapies of holistic medicine will be part of most major insurance plans. There are signs that this is already underway, but I don’t believe it will happen until we the people create a groundswell of demand for it, as well as for legislation that ensures all of us unimpeded access to the health care of our choice.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays With Morrie, which I also highly recommend). A very wise, loving, and compassionate tale that reveals the hidden worth all of our lives have.


Humor

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only one. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note that said,"Take all you want...God is watching the apples. "
