What’s New
This week’s newsletter features an informative rebuttal to a news item I included two issues ago on the health benefits of a molecule found in red wine. In my accompanying commentary to the story, I wrote: “Salud!” Whereupon I was contacted by June Russell, a lay expert in the health risks associated with alcohol, as well as many other contaminants. I was so impressed with June’s knowledge and obvious commitment to helping others stay healthy, that I invited her an contribute an article on the subject. I also suggest you read the wealth of information she has made available on her website: http://www.jrussellshealth.com.
A few days ago, I also received an email from Anthony White, a person proactively involved with holistic health and the issue of medical freedom. I’m including what he sent me in the Medical Freedom section because of its importance.
Finally, more on allergies, this time by way of a checklist that you can use to help determine if hidden allergies are affecting your health.
As always, please send me with your comments and suggestions. You can email me at larry@1healthyworld.com. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter.

Last week I received the following email from Anthony White, one of my readers. I’m reprinting it to provide you with an overview of how widespread the attempts are to severely limit our access to natural supplements. You can be sure be sure all of this is being orchestrated by special interests within Big Pharma. But we can stop such measures by becoming informed and taking action.
Here’s what Anthony sent me:
“Our Health & Freedom Of Choice Is Threatened!
USA, Australian, UK, European, and Canadian Governments are seriously considering new legislation aimed at the withdrawal of health products from our shelves or to severely limit our access to them. In Australia, in response to the PAN fiasco, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) have convened a closed-door committee made up of TGA representatives and pharmaceutical industry people (no one from the complementary medicine or health industry nominated or allowed to attend). They will release their new initiatives for the Australian health industry on August 15th 2003. These initiatives will probably be in line with the pharmaceutical directives of the UK and the EU (see below). One of the key members of this committee is a Professor Alistair McLennan. He is famous for his comment: "We shouldn't support the complementary medicine (industry) or subsidize it. It's a bit like subsidizing the tobacco industry or the gambling industry."
Only three recorded deaths have ever been linked to vitamins according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Two of these are questionable and only one is confirmed, this being a massive dose of Vitamin A taken by a lady in Darwin to commit suicide. Meanwhile doctors admit to around 18 000 deaths a year in Australia that are iatrogenic (directly caused by their treatments). Botanical remedies have been in use for 5000 years, safely used for medicine by every ancient civilization right up until this century. Historically, pharmaceutical drugs are the (very profitable) newcomers on the scene.
In May, PAN Pharmaceuticals was served with a "class one" withdrawal (products having caused death) on 1600 products for which no adverse reactions had been reported at all. How this logically follows the problems caused by one purely synthetic, chemical, pharmaceutical product (there was nothing at all natural about "Travacalm") has yet to be explained.
Meanwhile, in England and throughout Europe, a directive on traditional medicinal products is being introduced. To remain on sale, a product must have been on the market for 30 years (of which 15 must be in Europe) and licensed in the same way as pharmaceutical drugs or vaccines. The likely effect is the collapse of the specialist supplements market including most independent producers and retailers of botanical products. See http://www.dr-rath-foundation.org/vitaminbattle/stopcodex.htm.
Over in the US, the supplement Ephedra is being used as a scapegoat to introduce a new US Sen^te bill, the "Dietary Supplement Safety Act". If passed, this bill will allow the FDA (their equivalent to our TGA) to arbitrarily ban access to dietary supplements. In addition, the bill subjects safe and effective natural therapies to approval standards more stringent than those for pharmaceutical drugs. (See http://www.iahf.com/index2.html )Australians, be warned, where the FDA goes, the TGA often soon follows.
Canada? On July 15, about twenty armed officers and Health officials raided the offices of a company selling a nutritional supplement, Empowerplus, a combination of 36 vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which has a successful track record in treating symptoms of mental illness. Health Canada states that, under new Canadian law, making health claims classifies a supplement as a drug and therefore requires solid, scientific proof of effectiveness before it can be legally sold. Yet, Health Canada has already moved to shut down the $544,000 study of Empowerplus being conducted at the University of Calgary, despite early evidence of effectiveness. What's wrong with this picture?
This global regulation is driven by the pharmaceutical industry, as their business is sickness not health as they would like us to believe. The health/wellness industry is set to become a trillion dollar industry in the U.S. within the next ten years. The pharmaceutical industry wants to control or eliminate this competition in the U.S. and around the world. It is no coincidence that similar events are unfolding around the globe and that they remain largely unreported in the press (except for hysterical adverse press releases about so called dangerous health supplements). It is a strategy designed to keep us ill informed so legislation can be passed. Why?
The future availability and legal status of herbs, vitamins, amino acids, minerals and all other supplements in the U.S. and throughout the world may be determined by a committee made up of 146 nations called the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which operates in conjunction with the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Codex delegates overwhelmingly represent large multinational pharmaceutical companies and government regulating authorities, including the FDA and TGA. The delegates are determining an eight-step guideline that is already being implemented in many countries of the world. The Codex guidelines are intended to prevent the further sale of supplements and herbs and to regulate them as drugs to be manufactured solely by drug companies.
There are no representatives of small vitamin manufacturers and retailers at Codex meetings and health supplement consumers are not represented, as they are not eligible to attend. No media are allowed during these meetings.
Codex Alimentarius, in simple terms, is a code of law for food setting out maximum daily requirements of all nutrients. What it actually means is a threat to our health. Under the guise of protecting public safety through the standardization of food and botanical codes, the commission has become a tool of the international pharmaceutical industry that is intent on making all supplements - botanical or otherwise - available by prescription only. This is the heavy hand of major cartels of drug companies protecting their interests. They cannot patent plants; however if they identify an "active constituent" (no such thing exists by the way - the whole plant is what gives the healing effect) and synthesize it or part of if, then they can patent it. It is all about m^ney, power and corruption. This goes right up to the appointment of doctors as politicians.
Meanwhile, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John are leading celebrity protests over the threat to natural health products, joining over 40 high profile figures in demanding UK Government action to prevent the destruction of their natural health industry by new EU legislation. Health analysts believe that the withdrawal of these products shall lead to a dramatic increase in the number of visits to GPs as milliins of consumers become unable to purchase the natural remedies they currently use to maintain their health. Curiously, for every dollar spent on natural therapies, it has been estimated that $4 is saved in the mainstream medical system.
The Food Supplements Directive, about to be introduced into UK law, contains a list of permitted nutrients and nutrient sources that may be used in supplements. The list is woefully inadequate, excluding over 300 safe, popular products unless extensive assessments are undertaken for each. The Directive also lays down the maximum permitted dose levels of vitamins and minerals. Political pressure from Germany and France is expected to result in these levels being set well below those currently available in UK. Consumers will be prevented from purchasing safe and beneficial high doses from shops as they do now.
Sue Croft, Director of Consumers for Health Choice said: "We hope to raise awareness about the real threats that exist to the future of natural health products in the UK. It’s absolute madness that garlic tablets will need to undergo the same licensing process as a vaccine for AIDS or treatment for cancer but that is what we are facing."
Please pass this on to as many friends and associates as possible. Help us keep our health and freedom of choice! This is of dire importance to our long-term health and that of our children and further generations. If you have friends or associates that are public figures who could raise awareness of this issue, please get them involved otherwise there will be a general media black out on this affair.”
Health News and Commentary
Blue Cross Blue Shield Offers Alternative Care Discount Plan to Customers in Tennessee
As of last week, nearly one million Blue Cross customers in Tennessee became eligible to receive discounts of as much as 50% for certain types of alternative health care, including acupuncture, massage, fitness training and Tai Chi, simply by presenting their insurance ID card to a network of participating health providers businesses in the state. Called the BluePerks discount program, it is different from traditional health plans in that it does not offer insurance for these services, just discounts for Blue Cross customers who choose to pay for them out-of-pocket.
"We recognize our members have expenses that we pay for, but they also have to pay out of their own pocket," said Susan Emmett, product manager at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. "We were looking at cost-effective ways to stretch their health-care dollars."
"I think that as the efficacy of alternative medicine is demonstrated more and more, plans are choosing to cover it," added Larry Akey, a spokesman for the Washington-based Health Insur^nce Association of America.
To read more on this story, see http://snurl.com/28sy.
[Comment: Although this is a step in the right direction, and hopefully a policy that Blue Cross will eventually implement nationwide, I would much rather see insurance companies over comprehensive coverage for all of the primary care therapies that fall under the alternative medicine umbrella. Certain companies are moving in that direction, but I’m convinced it won’t occur in a big way until the public starts to demand unimpeded access to the health care therapies of their choice, along with far greater research dollars being allocated by our government that will verify their efficacy.
In the meantime, I am currently exploring similar discount programs that I hope to offer to all members of 1HealthyWorld.com. You can expect to hear more on this in the coming months.]
Some Children Born From C-Section Found to Have Higher Risk of Developing Food Allergies
According to research published last month in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, children of mothers with food allergies who are delivered by cesarean section may have a greater risk of developing food allergies, compared to children born naturally. Dr. Merete Eggesbo, of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health speculates that c-sections may result in delayed growth of healthy intestinal flora in babies delivered by this method, thereby increasing the risk of allergies.
According to a study of over 2,800 children, “For children with allergic mothers, the researchers found that cesarean section was associated with a sevenfold increased rate of parental reports of reactions to egg, fish, or nuts in children. The risk of confirmed egg allergy was increased by fourfold in these children.
“For children without allergic mothers, the association between cesarean section and the risk of food allergy was weak and not significant.”
To read the full story, see: http://snurl.com/28te.
[Comment: An estimated 85% of all cesarean deliveries performed in the United States are considered unnecessary, and are scheduled primarily for convenience sake and for the fact that the generate greater revenues for the performing physicians and hospitals where the births take place.]

Don’t Be Deceived When The Media Reports That Alcohol Is Healthy by June Russell, founder and publisher of http://www.jrussellshealth.com
There are media reports about studies that suggest wine may be healthy, studies such as the one that recently appeared in this newsetter, entitled ‘Red Wine Molecule Shown to Extend Life.’ The press releases of this study reported that resveratrol, which is found in grapes, wine and peanuts, has a positive effect on health and longevity - at least in yeast cells. However, a recent Newsweek article on this same study also reported that resveratrol degrades quickly in both the glass and the body. John Foltz, Ph.D., Director of the Coronary Thrombosis Research Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin Medical School, reports that wine only prevents blood from clotting at levels high enough for the wine drinker to be declared legally drunk, but that grape juice does the job without the dangers of the alcohol. The public needs to be educated to the fact that fruits and vegetables not only can contain even greater amounts of antioxidants than a glass of wine, but that the presence of alcohol hastens the breakdown of antioxidants in the blood, speeding their elimination from the body. According to a large Greek study, heart disease risk plunged 72 percent in those who ate more than 5 fruits and vegetables a day compared to those who ate less than one a day, and other information advises those who wish to boost HDL to do so by participating in regular aerobic exercise.
There is much deception in the media’s reporting of alcohol (wine) studies. Press releases regularly omit the dangers as well as the variables in studies that skew the results. Consistently, wine drinkers - as opposed to those who drink beer and liquor - are more likely to be nonsmokers, to exercise, have a lower cholesterol, to be educated and be in a higher socioeconomic class, which many researchers say is the reason for the positive outcomes for wine drinkers.
In a recent study of alcohol consumption that attributed the frequency of alcohol to a reduced risk of a heart attack (New England Journal of Medicine - 2003), those in the non-alcohol group had less physical activity, lower vitamin E intake, more diabetes and higher intake of trans- and saturated fat. With these added facts, which were not disclosed in the media reporting, it is easy to see the bias and deception. Political advantage, monetary gain, and the need for sensationalism are largely responsible for the misleading and deceptive reporting, not a concern for the public’s health.
Unlike prescription drugs, warnings of the risks of the drug alcohol are not required, and although wine is a drug, tranquilizer, carcinogen, and a depressant, just as is beer or liquor, it is portrayed as relatively harmless. The media has gradually ‘upped the ante,’ convincing the public that smaller amounts of alcohol are generally safe and only heavier and excessive drinking is a problem. The alcohol industry has promoted alcoholic beverages as not only socially acceptable but appropriate for almost every occasion, and we are encouraged to have a drink to unwind and relax - not realizing that having a ‘drink’ does not result in true relaxation, but results in ‘tranquilizing’ or ‘drugging’ the drinker.
Alcohol experts and drug awareness agencies tell us alcohol use is dose-related, or in other words, though smaller amounts of alcohol cause less harm than greater amounts, there is still harm - even with a single drink. Many individuals are ‘rethinking their drinking’ in the light of the many medical warnings about the dangers of drinking lightly or moderately.
Consider the following facts: The ‘French Paradox’ was disproved many years ago (by the WHO and others) because of faulty data, and in 2000, our government declared alcoholic beverages to be a class "A" human carcinogen, along with arsenic, asbestos, benzene, tobacco, etc. - not a substance that should be recommended for health benefits. Any amount of alcohol adversely affects brain function and memory, and increases the risk of having an ‘accident,’ either on the road, at home or work. Recent research shows that people not only cannot think clearly after drinking alcohol - it extends into the following day! The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recommends avoiding all alcohol for the lowest possible cancer risk.
The use of alcohol negates vitamins and nutrients by interfering with metabolism, and one out of 10 who drink will become addicted to alcohol. Medical advice tells us to avoid alcohol when we are anxious or depressed, if we have arthritis, high blood pressure or high triglycerides, cancer, diabetes, digestive or bowel problems, heart problems, allergies, kidney, bladder, or liver problems - or if taking medications (also over-the-counter ones). Even the use of smaller amounts of alcohol has been shown to depress the immune system, increase fatigue, increase the risk of cancer, interfere with sexuality and reproduction, increase risk of osteoporosis, interfere with sleep, increase stress, increase the risk of weight gain, and is an added risk for women, teens, and seniors and those with health problems.
In 1950 the AMA reported that smoking was not a problem and could perhaps be beneficial. This was followed in the 1960s by advising patients to be moderate in their use of tobacco. Today we are paying the price of illness and death for millions of Americans every year for this deception. Just as with alcohol, there are many studies that show health benefits from the nicotine in tobacco, but for both of these drugs the risks far outweigh any possible benefits. There are safer, more effective, and longer lasting ways to get the desired health benefits - exercise, proper diet, and meditation.
(References for the facts used in this article, as well as many additional ones that show the dangers of light and moderate alcohol use, can be found on my health website http://www.jrussellshealth.com. Individuals cannot make responsible choices when they do not have the facts, and when the original studies, editorial comments, and other reliable coverages are examined, there is less confusion about what is "healthy." I try to provide that coverage and make it available to the public.)

Do You Suffer From Hidden Allergies? A Checklist of Symptoms
The term "allergy" refers to an exaggerated or unusual response by the body to substances that are harmless, and even helpful, to most other people. According to most practitioners of holistic medicine, the incidence of allergies is much higher than is commonly believed, but in many cases allergies are merely nuisances. But for other people, contact with a substance they are allergic to can produce toxins in the body that can result in a host of health conditions, many of them quite severe. Unfortunately, the majority of allergy sufferers tend to be unaware that they are allergic in the first place, or else they are unable to identify the substance(s) causing their allergic response.
Allergenic substances generally fall into one of eight basic categories, depending on how they are contacted. These are: inhalants, ingestants, contactants, infectants, physical agents, genetic agents, molds and fungi. These categories, in turn, occur in two ways -- as food allergies or as allergies caused by environmental influences.
The following information can help you determine if you suffer from allergies. Please remember, however, that for a definitive diagnosis you are advised to contact a physician or health care provider trained in recognizing the role that allergies can play in illness.
Common Indicators of Allergy
The following symptoms are often signs of an allergic reaction. 1) Unnatural or persistent fatigue 2) Weight fluctuations during the course of the day 3) Frequent puffiness in your face, ankles or fingers 4) Hot flashes (apart from menopause) or perspiration for no obvious reason 5) Inexplicable racing of, or pounding pulse 6) A history of food intolerance (i.e., certain foods that cause flatulence, sneezing, a runny nose, drowsiness, etc.) 6) Cravings for certain foods, particularly bread, sugary foods, milk or other dairy products, coffee, tea, or chocolate 7) Frequent headaches, migraine, asthma, depression, muscle aches, eczema or gastrointestinal problems.
If any of the above symptoms are a frequent occurrence in your life, there is a strong likelihood that allergies are part of overall health condition.
Additional Allergy Symptoms
Many allergic symptoms are hidden or misdiagnosed, but the following are often telltale warning signs that allergies are present. In particular, they can be an indication of food allergies, the most common group of undetected allergens.
Physical Symptoms: dark circles, swelling or wrinkles under the eyes; vascular headaches; faintness or dizziness; sleepiness soon after a meal; insomnia; frequent waking during the night, or premature waking followed by an inability to return to sleep; runny or stuffy nose; postnasal drip; excessive mucus; watery eyes and/or blurred vision; ringing of the ears; earaches; recurrent ear infections (particularly common among children); sinusitis; sore throats, hoarseness or chronic coughing; gagging; heart palpitations; chest congestion; mucus or undigested food in the stool; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; constipation; bloating after meals; flatulence; abdominal pains or cramping; extreme thirst; coated tongue; anal or vaginal itch; hives or rashes; dermatitis; brittle nails and hair; dry skin; dandruff; skin pallor; muscle ache; weakness and fatigue; arthritic symptoms or joint pain; symptoms of PMS;. frequent or urgent urination; and obesity.
Psychological Symptoms: anxiety or panic attacks; depressions; crying jags; aggressive behavior; irritability; mental dullness or lethargy; confusion; excessive daydreaming; restlessness; poor work habits; inability to concentrate; slurred speech; and indifference or lack of enthusiasm for life.
If you suffer from the above symptoms you also may have hidden allergies, and it is recommended that you consult a holistic health care practitioner trained in their treatment.
A wealth of information on other proven approaches for dealing with allergies, can be found in the eBook Allergy-Free, available at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ebooks/Allergy-Book-Info.cfm.

Reader Feedback
In commenting about last week’s article on NAET as a treatment for allergies, one reader emailed me to say she and a number of other patients she knew only gained temporary relief from their allergy symptoms after receiving NAET treatments, and that her allergies returned a few months later. As a result, the practitioner who provided the treatments to her and the other patients has discontinued using NAET. Based on this, the reader found my article irresponsible.
I welcome such feedback but stand by what I wrote, given how many cases I personally am aware of in which complete and permanent resolution of allergies have been achieved by NAET, including by a number of leading health experts I know who have no affiliation with its developer, Dr. Devi Nambudripad, other than the fact that they trained with her. In addition, I would be the first to say that no therapy works for 100% of the people 100% of the time, and I know Dr. Nambudripad agrees with me on this. Overall, NAET does an impressive job of dealing with allergies, but in an of itself it cannot not address all potential factors that can be involved in allergic responses, some of which can be emotional in nature. (For example, it’s been shown that certain people who are allergic to pets are also emotionally closed down when it comes to receiving and expressing intimacy, love, and affection.) In choosing any type of therapy, it’s important that this point be understood. Moreover, if, after a reasonable amount of time, you are not experiencing any improvement in your condition, consider other treatment options in place of or in addition to the one you are receiving.

Books: Rational Mysticism: Dispatches from the Border Between Science and Spirituality by John Horgan. Though I found Horgan to be very much a prisoner of his own skepticism and conjecture for most of this book, I admired his honest and earnest seeking for answers to the deepest meaning of existence and whether or not science can explain mystic states of consciousness and vice versa. At the book’s end, he remains just as answerless as he was when he began, but in the midst of his quest, the reader is introduced to the thinking and discoveries of a disparate cast of leading scientists and researchers (Huston Smith, Ken Wilber, Stan Grof, James Austin, and the late Terrence McKenna among them), who provide their own thoughts and insights on such matters. And the book concludes with a beautiful epiphany that Horgan experienced that showcases how miraculous moments can occur to even the most hardened of skeptics.
The Woman With the Alabaster Jar by Margaret Starbird. Written by a Roman Catholic scholar, this book examines many of the same themes explored in The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, which I recommended a few weeks ago. (Brown cites it as one of the sources for his novel.)
